tyrion Posted November 4, 2016 Report Posted November 4, 2016 Damn, those PS-1's are going to be geographically desirable the end of next week but my wallet, not so much.

The PS-1s on the other hand I covet, as you know. I think you're confusing the L3000 with a hangover you may have once had. At a friend's. With a dog. Who was male.* And not castrated.** And yes, I know; I'll let you tell more if you want. *The dog, not the friend. **The dog, not the friend.

Bjorn Posted November 7, 2016 Report Posted November 7, 2016 When you've teamed up with Naim and agreed to show their name in the product photo, but really you don't give a flying F about their shit. 7
DonkeyBalls Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Some Utopia Porn: With a custom 300B amp. The Taks are fresh, so not sounding at its best just yet. Another few weeks and it will be singing. Direct drive from the Bricasti M1 DAC. This is the best setup I have heard so far. Once the Taks have 200 to 300 hours on them then the tube rig might be something special for the mids.

Where did you see that posted, originally? I know that Justin would be interested in knowing where a pic of his amp was published! 1

The guy apparently responsible for the product marketing of Focal's three new headphones is called Rob Follis, a PR consultant. He has a website where you can find this photo, as well as others also included in the official press release. Edited November 8, 2016 by Bjorn
EdipisReks1 Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 (edited) Found it, thanks. Edited November 8, 2016 by EdipisReks1
NotoriousBIG_PJ Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 I have a pair here. I'm really digging the Utopia's in my system. Really hard to find any major faults with them. They are so detailed, yet all types of recordings are listenable and I can play music on them for hours without fatigue. I haven't had this much fun with a headphone since first listening to ps-1's. Biggie. 3

Can't speak for Biggie, but I'd agree more with his description of the PS-1 as "fun" as opposed to "good", or maybe good fun. But they're definitely not neutral if that is a big part of your 'good' equation. I do enjoy them a ton for them for what they are, but for me anyway, they're a very mood and music sensitive listen. 1

jp11801 Posted November 27, 2016 Report Posted November 27, 2016 (edited) Todd let me borrow the Utopia as part of his loaner series and these are the real deal! Total clarity and extremely even handed across all frequencies. Bass is scary good as it goes very deep but js also very fast. Layering is a strength but soundstage is not. Overall I would say these are the best headphone in or out of production (never was an R10 fan). $4k is a steep mountain to climb but these are worth it. I can easily live with my LCD-X forever but these are a clear step ahead in every area. PS the two headphones I regret selling are the PS-1 and pink driver RS-1. Dusty good luck if you sell your pair Edited November 27, 2016 by jp11801 6
Dusty Chalk Posted November 27, 2016 Report Posted November 27, 2016 Yeah, hopefullly I'll get around to it before they're outdated. Or whatever.
Voltron Posted November 28, 2016 Report Posted November 28, 2016 I don't regret that you sold me your pink driver RS-1. One of the few dynamic headphones I listen to these days. 2
Sherwood Posted November 28, 2016 Report Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) I used the money well, but I also miss my pink driver RS-1s. On the lookout for a new pair always. I actually have a spare set of the pink drivers themselves, so I'm optimistic I'll some day find a "repaired" set with newer shitty drivers I can pry out. 19 hours ago, jp11801 said: Overall I would say these are the best headphone in or out of production Fack. tin ear Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 spent some time with the utopia yesterday. if i had the money and could get over the obscene price, i'd buy it. 1
nopants Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 i grabbed an elear to go with the boards for the transportable dynalo, pretty good so far. i don't really see these beating electrostatics unless the utopia is a huge step up but time will tell i kind of want to run these out of something beefy like that mig amp
jp11801 Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 the utopia and elear are not even close in my book, I had the elear at home for 30 days and it is a good 1k headphone but does not get close to the utopia 1
nopants Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 do they not sound similar? i usually make the assumption that they strive to derive some house sound, but i guess it could be some other philosophy like cost cutting etc
jp11801 Posted December 6, 2016 Report Posted December 6, 2016 nope they aim for two different signatures imho 1
