luvdunhill Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Nope, it's DOCSIS 3.0 and should be fine.
TMoney Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Very nice. TWC tried to screw me over after our 1 year "promo" price was up and charge me a shit ton more, but "because I was such a good customer", they'd give me the same service as before but 10 bucks more a month. I told them to blow me and I am ending up paying less now per month than before. And I have 50Mb/s (measured) service now rather than 30Mb/s (measured). Calling and being stubborn can work wonders. I went ahead and put in a reminder in my calendar to call a year from now as soon as the "promotional" rates end for this very reason.
Grahame Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Shelly, drop in on your neighbors, just to be sure. And remind them to cache their 4K "nature documentaries" ahead of time Edited July 25, 2015 by Grahame 1
shellylh Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Nope, it's DOCSIS 3.0 and should be fine. I realize that a properly working SB6121 would be fine. I'm just wonder if something could have been damaged (say from a power surge or heat from leaving it in for 3 years) that would cause it to not work sporadically.
roadtonowhere08 Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Just shooting in the dark here, but I am assuming you are running a wireless network. If you are saying that the connection completely cuts out completely sporadically, I am inclined to believe it might be either wireless channel interference from other wireless devices in the immediate area (perhaps your post church service coitus seeking neighbors) or something router related. But the predictable trouble on Sunday night is odd. Easy way to rule out the modem is to hardwire it to a computer or smart TV and use it all Sunday night. If no problems, the modem is not to blame. I really doubt it is the modem though. It being on all the time is perfectly fine. Just some thoughts. Edited July 25, 2015 by roadtonowhere08
Grahame Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 If you have Android /non apple gear, you can run various scanners to see how congested your local airwaves are. Apartment living does have some downsides 1
Grahame Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 Apple seemed to remove all their scanner apps, because they could be used for "other purposes" .... If you know your modems IP address (typically its the default gateway seen from the router), you can look at status information from its built in webserver (if it has one) So on my network its http://192.168.100.1/ giving me ... You can look at the logs to see if there are any issues after reboot and it has aquired (local) network time .... 1
shellylh Posted July 25, 2015 Report Posted July 25, 2015 I doubt it is the router but I could try some tests. It is an Apple extreme. I do have Windows, Macs, iOS devices, and Android devices at home for testing purposes.
crappyjones123 Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 http://www.woot.com/plus/motorola-surfboard-cable-modems-6 Today only. But they do come up frequently for anyone looking for a spare to keep away for a just in case moment. 1
Dusty Chalk Posted July 27, 2015 Author Report Posted July 27, 2015 Thanks. $50 and they have it in black. Purchased. Now I need a new router. 1
crappyjones123 Posted July 28, 2015 Report Posted July 28, 2015 Airport express and a can of spray paint?
Dusty Chalk Posted July 28, 2015 Author Report Posted July 28, 2015 ...and a can of spray paint? I like the way you think, but ( a ) if you look in the consumerism thread, I already purchased the C-7 or whatever it's called, and ( b ) I'd be afraid I'd accidentally pick a paint that somehow interfered with RF or cooling or something else I hadn't thought of. That'd be just my luck.
crappyjones123 Posted July 28, 2015 Report Posted July 28, 2015 Not in the casino anymore so can't see that thread but non metallic paint I would think wouldn't interfere with the antennas. Also while recently trying to figure out which color shirts to buy on sale from rei, I found out that darker colors remove head better from your body in hot weather - it absorbs the heat from the environment and your body equally. That's why most if not all desert tribes wear very loose fitted black clothes. Again all of this is speculation on my part so do with it as you wish
Dusty Chalk Posted July 28, 2015 Author Report Posted July 28, 2015 Well, they're both in black, so moot point either way. And I did know that about desert tribes!
roadtonowhere08 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) Crappy, you got it mixed up. Only crazy people wear black loose fitting clothing in the blazing sun. Black absorbs the energy from the sun and overheats people in no time (pretty much no albedo). One really wants to wear white, loose fitting clothing (very high albedo). Easy way to test. In the middle of a hot day, walk barefoot on a concrete sidewalk. Then walk on the asphalt street. Feel a difference? Got that wrong Edited July 30, 2015 by roadtonowhere08
roadtonowhere08 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 I found out that darker colors remove head better from your body... CJ was referring to the Ninja's...... It becomes clear now
crappyjones123 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) Nope, was referring to desert folk...bedouins, tuaregs etc. Although I forgot the fact that wind/air circulation plays a role so you would need to place the router in a box and then paint the box black. Or something. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2012/aug/19/most-improbable-scientific-research-abrahams http://io9.com/5903956/the-physics-that-explain-why-you-should-wear-black-this-summer http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v283/n5745/abs/283373a0.html http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1886/does-black-clothing-keep-you-cooler Edited July 30, 2015 by crappyjones123
Dusty Chalk Posted July 30, 2015 Author Report Posted July 30, 2015 No, Crappy is referring to the Bedouins. Although it also has to do with keeping moisture, which has nothing to do with router boxes. EDIT: Crappy beat me to the comment, but I am going to ignore the obvious trolling on his part. Crappy, you're slipping, that one was obvious.

In the middle of a hot day, walk barefoot on a concrete sidewalk. Then walk on the asphalt street. Feel a difference? Everything you said is correct but when it comes to the clothing argument I used to think the same. A white road surface reflects more heat than it absorbs. But there is no layer on top of it with air circulating under it to speak of. The argument for loose fitted dark clothes in the heat is that while white clothes reflect the heat from the sun, they also do the same back to one's body whereas black clothes absorb it from both ends. Now if there is wind, the cooling effect of the black clothes is higher than it is for white clothes. Hence their preference for dark clothes. As one of the websites said, if they had seen value in wearing white in the Arabian desert, they would have figured it out by now. Actually started reading about it because I saw some stuff on REI for sale in their outlet section and was looking for hiking shirts and they surprisingly came in very dark colors. Looked up why such dark colors would be used for hiking in the sun and came across those websites. Edited July 30, 2015 by crappyjones123

Crappy, you're slipping, that one was obvious. I must be doing something wrong because I really am not trolling (seriously). Wasn't doing it in the movie section either but somehow my thoughts on movies come off as trolling. The remark about disagreeing with jacob leading to a one or a two week ban - that was me trolling. So that was one occasion. Other than that, I just don't like the exact same movies as you guys. Don't see the big whoop in that but whatever. Won't be posting in there anymore either. Besides that, your radar is off brother. Edited July 30, 2015 by crappyjones123
roadtonowhere08 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 Last time I blindly link two different scientific phenomena together. Went to all those links. Makes total sense now. Thanks, Crappy and Dusty.

You really think putting the router in a box and painting the box black will help to cool it? You're not that dumb. Hence, trolling.
roadtonowhere08 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 I must have skimmed over that bit, Crappy. Pretty sure that only works for SS amps to make them sound more tube-y. I think you pulled a Post #41
crappyjones123 Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 ORLY? You really think putting the router in a box and painting the box black will help to cool it? You're not that dumb. Hence, trolling. The "or something" at the end of that statement usually is attached to hair brained ideas that are most likely not going to work. I've seen it be used plenty in lieu of the blatant /sarcasm tag Hence, my usage. Wasn't trolling there as I thought I put the /sarcasm tag in my post, albeit in a not so clear manner. Anyhow...
