PretentiousFood Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Slightly off-topic, but I've been eyeing the U-Turn real hard over the last few weeks as my first rig. Do any of the other cheaper TTs offer balanced outputs from the cartridge? I wanted to build a preamp first. and it seems like a proper balanced/differential amp would be great for noise rejection. It feels kind of silly to use a transformer for phase splitting (and not step-up) when the cartridge doesn't need to be ground-referenced.
Aura Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 I have been 100% satisfied with my green one... I really want the white plinth with acrylic platter. Looks awesome. Do you use a different cartridge from what's available from U-Turn?
blessingx Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 BTW, the Emotiva XPS-1 Phono Pre is currently $100 on the warehouse sale.
shellylh Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Do you use a different cartridge from what's available from U-Turn? This.
Aura Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) This. We're such suckers. This is one money pit I could so easily avoid too. Edited January 29, 2015 by Aura 2

blessingx Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 It's a sale on refurbs in an email just sent out. Not sure how to get the actual sale prices.
Absorbine_Sr Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 Ryan, Saturday Audio Exchange in Chicago usually has a bunch of trade in turntables. Might be worth a look. 2
dsavitsk Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 What's wrong with auto-start and stop and repeat? I love how the 1600 does that! I also have manual td-160 and appreciate the convenience. My LP12 does not have auto start/stop, so it must be wrong.
Mr.Sneis Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 Shush! My td-160 wishes it could be an lp12! BTW Doug, I realized the other day the ECP logo looks oddly like a cart/stylus... maybe I was just slow to catch on to that doh!
dsavitsk Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 BTW Doug, I realized the other day the ECP logo looks oddly like a cart/stylus... I realized it after I read your post pointing it out but maybe I should make a phono stage ... 4

Not yet - still rocking the original - Ortofon OM 5E Phono Cartridge. Maybe someday - but would rather work on my Linn LP12 first. The U-turn rig is doing what it was bought for - bring vinyl goodness into my living room. (done)

Anything with a 5-pin DIN plug is balanced from the cartridge, that I have seen. It's easy to rewire if it's not. 1
recstar24 Posted February 1, 2015 Author Report Posted February 1, 2015 What are the measurements of the uturn?
Grahame Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) What are the measurements of the uturn? http://bit.ly/160EaDy (Hint: it's in the overview section) Edited February 1, 2015 by Grahame
recstar24 Posted February 1, 2015 Author Report Posted February 1, 2015 Ha. I was on their official website and I simply didn't scroll down far enough to see the rest of the description. Yay . 1
recstar24 Posted February 1, 2015 Author Report Posted February 1, 2015 Oh I think I am going to go with the uturn and that emotiva sale on the phone preamp. Should be small and simple enough for the wife to be able to play grandmas records and gives me an excuse to purchase vinyl. 4
blessingx Posted February 1, 2015 Report Posted February 1, 2015 Pick up that Lazaretto Ultra LP. That would hook anyone. 1
recstar24 Posted February 2, 2015 Author Report Posted February 2, 2015 The NAD pp2e is also pretty cheap. The emotiva is $90 with my e club discount.

I could not be bothered to quote PretentiousFood... I'm not totally convinced of the benefits of a balanced phono stage. Balanced inputs, so that you get noise rejection for the cartridge level signal, absolutely. Balanced RIAA? SOOOOOOOOOO much work for no benefit. Balanced inputs. Convert to SE (transformer or op-amp based to get noise rejection) do RIAA & voltage gain single ended. Do whatever you gotta do for outputs (transformer or op amp phase splitter).
dsavitsk Posted February 2, 2015 Report Posted February 2, 2015 Balanced RIAA? SOOOOOOOOOO much work for no benefit. Really? It's not much more work for lots of benefit. The RIAA doesn't change-- you just go from signal to signal instead of signal to ground (and double the impedance). The benefit is not worrying about grounding and noise. If I was only going to have one balanced component, it would be the phono stage.
skullguise Posted February 7, 2015 Report Posted February 7, 2015 Funny coincidence story..... Was selling my Chestnut Hill George table radio through CraigsList, a woman named JoAnne and her friend Vicky came by to listen and purchase. We talked about love of music and audio. Vicky mentioned her son was involved with manufacturing turntables, so I asked what company. She started to answer, "He's right here in Woburn...it's..." and I finished the sentence "...U-Turn...!" She was pleasantly surprised that I had heard of it, and very happy to hear it was recommended and well-received here. FWIW, she says they are very customer-service oriented, and many people (not just his mother, she laughs) think pretty highly of them.
recstar24 Posted February 7, 2015 Author Report Posted February 7, 2015 I'm sold on the uturn, but now it appears the wait is until May:(
