It's probably worth just avoiding use of the word niggardly and its relatives altogether in this age of reactionary litigation. Wasn't there some chap over stateside got into all kinds of pointless trouble for using it last year and the brain dead civil rights ranters tried to crucify him for having a wide vocabulary?

Yes. It was an aide to the DC mayor, in 1999.
