VPI Posted November 12, 2014 Author Report Posted November 12, 2014 Wouldn't having your trekking pole thing right in the middle of the tent be a pain in the ass? I have looked at some that use the trekking poles for support and kind of like the idea of something like the Veda tents or maybe a Lightheart. http://lightheartgear.com/index.php/tents/lightheart-duo-tents/product/view/6/5
tyrion Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 I like that Lionheart and came close yesterday to buying a Nemo. I won't be 100% for 4 or 5 months but i have a lot of time to obsess over this stuff.
Iron_Dreamer Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 I am very happy with both Western Mountaineering bags I have picked up. Not sure if a treated down or synthetic might be better in a very humid environment down there though. I am looking at some minimalists tents from Tarptent and trying to figure out what Cuben Fiber is. Many nights of wet, never getting close to or below freezing? I'd probably just get synthetic and not worry about it. For how not-that-low the temps would be, you really just need minimal extra warmth, especially if you don't mind sleeping in a few layers. The quality on the WM bags is just great. My "summer" sleeping bag is this Mountain Hardwear, which is about as warm as it gets for only 1lb (used it down to 20ish with a few layers at 12,500ft). Pretty narrow cut, though: http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mtn-speed-32-regular-OU8519.html
Wmcmanus Posted November 12, 2014 Report Posted November 12, 2014 What else is there to do? **BRENT** Frisbee day? 1
tyrion Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 I'm going synthetic. Peter, what do you think of this for $163: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/mountain-hardwear-32-f-hibachi-down-sleeping-bag-600-fill-power-long-mummy~p~6953h/
VPI Posted November 15, 2014 Author Report Posted November 15, 2014 Spent some time at the REI sale. Some really good deals there. $105 off the Baltoro 75. Ended up getting the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 with the footprint for around $260 out the door plus a bunch of winter gym/running clothes. 2
tyrion Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 That is a great price for that tent, in particular with a footprint. Online, the best price I found is $311.00. The Baltro price is also damn good.
VPI Posted November 16, 2014 Author Report Posted November 16, 2014 Yeah the sale price was not marked anywhere in the store, just showed up when I checked out. Might be a pricing error but getting the tent and the overpriced Big Agnes footprint seemed like the best deal I was going to find on a tent.
tyrion Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 If you end up in an REI again and can score another one for that price I would gladly take it off your hands.
VPI Posted November 16, 2014 Author Report Posted November 16, 2014 This was the only UL2 in the store. They do have a clearance on the Veda 2P for $299 now as well.
tyrion Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 This was the only UL2 in the store. They do have a clearance on the Veda 2P for $299 now as well. Cool. I have a 20% off coupon but not good for Big Agnes. I will check out the Veda. It needs 4 trekking poles which is fine when I'm not alone. i have 2 pairs of trekking poles so can always carry extra pair if I go out alone, which will not be the norm. May pick up a pair of folding poles.
guzziguy Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 REI is having a big sale now. There might me lots of interesting finds.
tyrion Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 Leaning to the Tarptent Double Moment.
VPI Posted November 16, 2014 Author Report Posted November 16, 2014 That looks like a really nice tent.
tyrion Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 A bit more than i wanted to spend but seems to be a good piece of gear.
jp11801 Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 Dang I see over a grand fleeing my wallet getting geared up 3
tyrion Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 Dang I see over a grand fleeing my wallet getting geared up Yes
tyrion Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 Big Agnes Seedhouse 3SL with footprint purchased. Sleeping bag is next.
tyrion Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Pics of the tent without the fly. Took about 2 minutes to set up. It will be nice and cozy for me Jp and raffy:
MexicanDragon Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 Raffy's spot is just outside the tent adding an extra layer of protection from mosquitos, right? **BRENT**
tyrion Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 There is a vestibule to keep our gear. He would probably fit. 2
VPI Posted December 14, 2014 Author Report Posted December 14, 2014 Looks great Mike, I need to break my Big Agnes out and give it a test. I just never actually get to spend any time at home.
nikongod Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 It is just short of 2 years away, but I thought this story may be interesting to the Washington-DC contingent: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/digger/wp/2015/01/28/rei-to-open-flagship-store-at-uline-arena/ REI opening new flagship store.
VPI Posted January 29, 2015 Author Report Posted January 29, 2015 Yeah, that looks pretty awesome. I have two REI within 10 miles of my house already so I am kind of surprised they would put in another, but I won't complain.
guzziguy Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) Maybe you can get REI to make one of them hipster/douche-free. Edited January 29, 2015 by guzziguy
