metalfan247 Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 Dear Headphone audiophiles, I want to buy the best headphones for listening to metal music. I recently purchased sE electronics The EGG speakers with amplifier and have concluded that they have way too much bass. I was disappointed when I placed a AKG K240 headphone in my Focusrite Forte usb soundcard and heard tons of details in my favorite records that I had not previously heard. I love hearing all the tiny details the artists intended us to hear. From what I have researched, any speakers/headphones that are fantastic for classical music will likely be great for metal as well (clear highs, good mids, little bass). Basically, I need headphones that make me hear everything you can possibly hear in the following albums listed below. I do not need something that 'forgives' bad recording quality. I want to hear everything the artist recorded. Do not limit your advice based on price, I'm flexible about this. Metal subgenres: folk, progressive, death, neoclassical, thrash, orchestral. Albums that I use to test quality: Angra - Temple of shadows Animals as leaders - The joy of motion Annihilator - Criteria for a black widow Arch enemy - Wages of sin Arch enemy - Doomsday machine Arcturus - The sham mirrors At the gates - Slaughter of the soul Behemoth - Demigod Cacophony - Go off! Carach angren - Lammendam Catamenia - Winternight tragedies Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder (reloaded) Children of Bodom - Follow the reaper (reloaded) Carcass - Swansong (remastered) Darkane - Rusted angel (remastered) Darkane - Insanity Death - Human (remastered 2011) Death - Individual thought patterns (remastered 2008) Death - Symbolic (remastered) Death - The sound of perseverance Decapitated - The negation Dimmu borgir - Puritanical euphoric misanthropia Dimmu borgir - Death cult armaggedon Dream Theater - Black clouds and silver linings Equilibrium - Erdentempel Freak kitchen - Move Gojira - The way of all flesh Gojira - L'enfant sauvage In flames - Colony Jason Becker - Perpetual burn Keep of kalessin - Armada Lamb of God - As the palaces burn (remastered) Lamb of God - Ashes of the wake Lost soul - Chaostream Marty Friedman - Dragon's kiss Marty Friedman - Scenes Marty Friedman - Introduction Marty Friedman - Inferno Megadeth - Rust in peace (remastered) Megadeth - Countdown to extinction (remastered) Meshuggah - Destroy erase improve (reloaded) Meshuggah - Nothing (2006 re-recorded) Moonsorrow - Voimasta ja kunniasta Necrophagist - Epitaph Neuraxis - Trilateral progression Nevermore - This Godless endeavor Nile - Annihilation of the wicked Old man's child - In defiance of existence Opeth - Blackwater park Opeth - Deliverance Opeth - Ghost reveries Pantera - Cowboys from hell (remastered) Pantera - Vulgar display of power (remastered) Pantera - Far beyond driven (remastered) Psycroptic - The scepter of the ancients Ram-zet - Escape Rhapsody of fire - Dawn of victory Scarve - Irradiant Septicflesh - Communion Slayer - Seasons in the abyss Stratovarius - Visions Stratovarius - Destiny Symphony X - V the new mythology suite Symphony X - The odyssey The faceless - Planetary duality The forsaken - Arts of desolation The haunted - Made me do it Tony MacAlpine - Maximum security Trivium - Shogun Unleashed - Hammer Battalion Vader - The art of war Wintersun - Time 1 Yngwie Malmsteen - Magnum opus Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto suite in E flat minor op. 1 Yngwie Malmsteen - Facing the animal Yngwie Malmsteen - Attack!!
cetoole Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 Stax SR007mk1 for home, if you can't use speakers. JH16 for elsewhere, if you can't use speakers.
Torpedo Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 We're not the headphone audiophiles you are looking for. Read your welcome message.
grawk Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 go to http://www.babeland.com They've got a number of excellent options for prostate stimulators. You should find one that will enable you to stretch to reach the demands extreme metal requires. 1
nopants Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 I remember visiting that site for the first and the hundredth time, wanting to believe the name implied something about the content contained within
wink Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) For metal music I'd recommend metal headphones. http://final-audio-design.com/es/muramasa-%E2%85%A7/ Edited September 5, 2014 by wink 1
Dusty Chalk Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 tl;dr, but I got as far as the subject title, so: Stax SR007mk1 for home, if you can't use speakers. JH16 for elsewhere, if you can't use speakers. ...also, I prefer the MK II for metal and rock'n'roll by a small margin. And a lot of people swear by Gradoes. Grados. Gradoseses. HF1 or HF2 or PS1. Also, VTGs.
DefQon Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 @grawk: Do you like that kind of music?
grawk Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 baby metal? I like that band. Most of my metal days are decades behind me.
metalfan247 Posted September 5, 2014 Author Report Posted September 5, 2014 Stax SR007mk1 for home, if you can't use speakers. JH16 for elsewhere, if you can't use speakers. What kind of speakers + amp would you recommend for metal as best, if I won't use headphones?
nikongod Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 If you only want to go half-assed: Klipsch corner horns. If your room happens to lack the necessary corners for the K-horns you should get LaScala. If your room does not happen to be large enough for the any of the above mentioned speakers, get a larger room. 1
mypasswordis Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 AKG K340s with Jensen caps and unregulated power supplies to improve power supply rejection of the amplifier Definitely don't get Stax, they don't have colour and are grainy sounding
kevin gilmore Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 i always like the belle klipsch better. 1
Dusty Chalk Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 What kind of speakers + amp would you recommend for metal as best, if I won't use headphones? He's an electrostatic guy, so he'll probably say Final or Quad. For amp, use baked beans with bacon.
Grahame Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 He's an electrostatic guy, so he'll probably say Final or Quad. For amp, use baked beans with bacon. These are the "cans" you're looking for
