grawk Posted May 29, 2021 Report Posted May 29, 2021 didn’t get the mamba, guy never replied. Did get the juice. i’ll have to get better to use that. 1
VPI Posted May 29, 2021 Author Report Posted May 29, 2021 This looks like fun. Picking up Kasia’s new Hobie Lynx. 3
luvdunhill Posted May 29, 2021 Report Posted May 29, 2021 The Lynx is super cool. I am curious how it stands up to boat wakes.
VPI Posted May 29, 2021 Author Report Posted May 29, 2021 (edited) It is super light, but wide so I would guess better than most kayaks. Edited May 29, 2021 by VPI 1
luvdunhill Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 She needs a bit of a bath, as got caught in a bit of a downpour and then took a bit of a tree with her on the way into the garage, but… 4
shellylh Posted June 1, 2021 Report Posted June 1, 2021 (edited) Sweet Hobie! We are planning to get a tandem Hobie pedal kayak but haven't found a way to haul it without a trailer. Jealous of the trip, Dan! For those of you not on FB, Yumi and I packrafted for 3 days/2 nights on the San Miguel and Dolores rivers (about 27 miles). I was a bit nervous the first day (it was my first time packrafting) but it was awesome! Will post pics later. Edited June 16, 2021 by shellylh 4
luvdunhill Posted June 9, 2021 Report Posted June 9, 2021 Built a bunch of new rigging for the Laser. Used lots of locking eye splices and designed it with shackles to cut down the rigging time. We had to cut the Cunningham after not being able to get a bowline knot out of the Dyeema when out in about 10 mph wind. Now that should be a lot easier. Just waiting on one more shackle and then hopefully we will be able to try it all out. On 6/1/2021 at 2:29 PM, shellylh said: Sweet Hobie! You might look at Trailex (they build the Hobie branded trailers) as well as Genesis (but looks like only pick-up in Michigan) and Carnai. I think those are the usual choices other than custom. I imagine the issue though is hauling it not finding one that fit the kayaks…

We are planning to get a Thule Hullavator installed on the top of the van which takes off 40 pounds but it is still going to be a bitch to put up and down. We looked at verticle racks but it would be too tall.
grawk Posted June 17, 2021 Report Posted June 17, 2021 took my daughters kayaking for the first time yesterday. 8
luvdunhill Posted June 19, 2021 Report Posted June 19, 2021 Cleaned up the boat a bit and re-epoxied the mast (comp-tip). Sadly McMaster-Care might have messed up my order (a first!) and I am missing two stainless steel bolts.. Barkeepers Friend worked quite well on the trampolines. I used 3M Perfect-It for both the anti-slip and sides - the Medium cut didn’t mess with the decals. Waiting for my new TX numbers to arrive in the mail.. 1
swt61 Posted June 19, 2021 Report Posted June 19, 2021 I don't understand. Where does the music come out at? Is that thing in-between the pontoons a giant electrostatic panel?

Something like that which ran off sdcard memory would be pretty sweet..
luvdunhill Posted July 4, 2021 Report Posted July 4, 2021 Washed the sails for the Laser and don’t think they will last much longer. Have one tear I have to patch and a batten pocket that is loosing its stitching. No clue if there is even a local sailmaker. I am guessing they are 20 years old, original to the boat. 1
grawk Posted July 6, 2021 Report Posted July 6, 2021 paddled the Nantahala again today... went in like billy bad ass oops, course correction time ouch, fuck 7 2 3
grawk Posted July 19, 2021 Report Posted July 19, 2021 ran the nolichucky gorge yesterday. Way more river than I'm particularly ready for, but I made some class IV rapids successfully. Was on a 10' dagger torrent, a whitewater sit on top, so it was partially easy mode, but also crazy hard to work in the technical areas. I swam a LOT, and the shallow areas were a nightmare. But I did it. We initially were gonna run the lower part of the river, a class 2/3 with lots of flat water, so we all brought longer boats, then the level of the gorge was right, so we did it. I'm sore as hell today. 1
luvdunhill Posted July 19, 2021 Report Posted July 19, 2021 That’s awesome! We ended up getting stuck out on the cat today. We were in a spot of the lake where it was too narrow to tack effectively (the cat just doesn’t have the upwind performance of a monohull) and gain ground upwind.. the wind was about 10 mph straight down the middle with cliffs on each side. We got rescued by a more experienced sailor on a small john boat who said we were doomed to never get back up the lake. Heh.
VPI Posted July 19, 2021 Author Report Posted July 19, 2021 I played Christopher Cross Sailing on the lake today for the new neighbors that bought a little sail boat and got stuck out in the middle for what seemed to be hours. I thought it was pretty funny, not sure they agreed. 1

grawk Posted August 27, 2021 Report Posted August 27, 2021 I'm going to be taking the kids with me down the Nantahala on labor day, and in preparation, my youngest has been in a sit in kayak on the lake a few times. Yesterday she decided she was ready to start learning to roll, and pulled it off in her 3rd attempt, and got it twice in a row. 3
luvdunhill Posted August 28, 2021 Report Posted August 28, 2021 Awesome! I have been working on building a trailer. Lots of fun, welding, grinding (but not so much fun painting - weather isn’t helping) and getting close to my deadline on Wed with the police to get an inspection and a VIN number for it. Then I need to get the mast cradle built. It’s going to look something like this but perhaps with a u-shaped liner out of hdpe plastic. Any other ideas?
luvdunhill Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 (edited) Been working to overhaul a trailer redid the bearings cut off the old bunks used POR-15 for three coats directly on the rust then top coated two coats of OSHA blue re-did all the wiring and lights to get it legal, finally got inspection and the vin number assigned (a three month process, involving appraisal, inspection, weight certificate, surety bond, tons of paperwork and waiting in lines…) Now I am on to working on the front mast cradle again and trying to build in a winch to help with the mast raising process. Had a trial run over the weekend and my trig was off (angles are hard) and line was too short. Rats! Edited September 26, 2021 by luvdunhill 6
