Grahame Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Interesting tactics from the Swiss Goalie, but to no avail. Quote
Torpedo Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Chance seems to be favoring the big old teams. Poor Swiss Quote
Voltron Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 we're fucked. great game overall but damn, I can't see USA scoring twice in 15 minutes Quote
skullguise Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Yup....great steps to get here, but just wore down (and lost one of our best forwards)..... Quote
Aura Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) We had an opportunity with less than 1 minute left in regulation to win, and we didn't. Not going to forget that for a while. As bad as being a Cubs fan in '03. Edited July 1, 2014 by Aura Quote
guzziguy Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 I'm afraid that as long as the USA can't develop even a single elite offensive player, we are doomed to results like this. We've developed several elite goalies, maybe an elite defensive back or two but no elite mid-fielders or forwards. Today was especially frustrating because the defense played well (except for the panic around the first goal) and Howard played the game of his life. The offense, however, played scared all day long. They rushed every chance they had (I didn't see the USA goal) and never came close to scoring when it counted. Hopefully, someday we'll develop an elite player that can take over a game. I'm surprised it hasn't happened by now. Quote
Voltron Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 I guess I better revert to the blood and start rooting for France. It's time to rock out with the Coq out. Allez les Bleus! Quote
Aura Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Costa-fucking-Rica! Their #1 is named Bryan and I'm a sucker for massive underdogs. Quote
morphsci Posted July 1, 2014 Author Report Posted July 1, 2014 Gotta root for Germany, for the Bier! Quote
Aimless1 Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Indeed. Root for the beer (bier). Deutchland. Quote
morphsci Posted July 1, 2014 Author Report Posted July 1, 2014 You can certainly win without an elite forward or midfielder, look at Belgium. Quote
robm321 Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Costa-fucking-Rica! ... I'm a sucker for massive underdogs. This. Quote
Tyll Hertsens Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Beer? Germany? Bah! The Belgians have the best beer. Quote

grawk Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 that's because germans are aggressively wrong. Quote
guzziguy Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 You can certainly win without an elite forward or midfielder, look at Belgium. You can beat lesser team, yes. But I don't believe that Belgium has ever won the cup. I don't think that this will be their year either. USA was not close to playing at Belgium's level today (except for the goalie). Unless we got lucky, it was just a matter of time until one of the incessant attacks resulted in a goal. Without Howard's heroics, the score could easily have been 5-1. Belgium could attack at will. As far as USA development of forwards and midfielders, have we produced one that matched any on Belgium's teams? I doubt we've produced any that come close to Belgium's better forwards and midfielders. Quote
Tyll Hertsens Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) that's because germans are aggressively wrong. Yup. Not enough good beer, they get pissy. Edited July 1, 2014 by Tyll Hertsens Quote
guzziguy Posted July 1, 2014 Report Posted July 1, 2014 Brewing. That's one place we have developed some elite players. Quote
