Voltron Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Do you have anything in the bath for a 30-day cook cycle? 1
Dusty Chalk Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I don't have an iPhone, but I'm about ready to try sous vide. What's the iPhone connection, it tells you when it's ready? You can control the temperature of the bath?
Grahame Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 ^ from the article Connectivity and Apps The iPhone App makes it incredibly easy to cook with Anova. You simply find the food you’re cooking, adjust the settings if you’d like, and hit start. There’s no need to search for time and temperature settings. It will all be programmed into your phone. We’re going to release an SDK, so that people can develop their own apps to work with Anova. We anticipate people will make nutritional apps, apps that make it easy to share what you’re cooking with others, recipe apps, and time and temperature apps. We want you to be able to input what you’ve got in the fridge and simply touch a button to begin cooking the perfect meal. 1

Salt Peanuts Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) ^ I liked the idea until I saw the pricing - not worth it for my use/needs. Also, I doubt the thing would work with too many cases. Edited May 13, 2014 by Salt Peanuts

Nebby Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/solar-roadways Implausible for a number of reasons, but since its already reached minimum its already a successful scam. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
jgazal Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I am not a specialist. It is certainly more expensive than tar. I thought they may have brought the revenue of energy produced to present value, accounted price reduction of solar cells with scale and maybe receive some public funds since there is no tar to absorb solar rays and increase heat island effect. Thank you for warning me it is a scam.
grawk Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 solar panels seem like they're a long time away from being optimally efficient, and roads get a lot of wear and tear. The concept is good, but I don't think it's ready. Maybe a solar roof over the highways instead.
Nebby Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 The main problem being that glass alone costs a whole lot more than asphalt and on top of that just regular wear and tear from cars will wreck the efficiency of the panels (assuming they don't completely die). There's simply a lot of other places you can place solar panels which would be much more appropriate than the road.
Dusty Chalk Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I have to admit, I posted as much to hear of any possible fallbacks (the wear and tear thing, in particular, seems "beyond current technology", to paraphrase how grawk so diplomatically put it), because I really like the idea of solar powered cars, directly or indirectly, ever since I read The Oatmeal's diatribe on the Tesla, albeit for entirely different reasons.

While not directly related to tesla or the vaporware road-tiles, at all, my local school district has covered pretty much all of their parking lots with awnings made of solar panels. It looks quite nice, no doubt shades the cars a bit in the summer, and obviously eats some sunlight.
