LFF Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Should be a treat to listen to STEELY DAN/AJA 30TH ANNIV. NUMBERED LTD EDITION 180g LP All-Analog Remastering by Kevin Gray at AcousTech Mastering! Authorized by Walter Becker, Donald Fagen and Grammy Award Winning Engineer Elliot Scheiner! "The new Cisco reissue is vastly superior to both the original pressing (ABC AA 1006) and to Mobile Fidelity's 1/2 speed mastered reissue (Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-0333)... Putting it more bluntly, this is a stupendous production. If it doesn't sound good on your system now, it awaits being revealed for how good it really is when your system is elevated to match the occasion." - Michael Fremer, musicangle.com It's an excellent LP with awesome mastering. It is my second favorite version of this album right after the Steve Hoffman version.

GREAT record!

barmar46 Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I see aja as a mobile fidelity gold cd not a steve hoffman dcc? what's the deal on the mofi? cause i just paid $39 for a mint one on amazon based on all this excitement and if it ain't all that i'm canceling right away! Yikes, none of you aja addicts are online right now. i hope i made the right choice. ouch.
postjack Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 There are a lot of different versions of Aja, it being one of those classic audiophile albums. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking the Hoffman version is a very specific MCA pressing (Hoffman also did some mastering for MCA, which I think was his work pre-DCC). Then there is the Cisco pressing, which was mastered by Kevin Grey @ Acoustech. When Grey's name is on it, you can pretty much assume it approaches the quality of a Hoffman release, since Hoffman & Grey are buddies and work together frequently.
aardvark baguette Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 barmar46, if you dont have any version of Aja, keep in mind the Citizen Steely Dan box set sounds fantastic as well. Maybe not as good as the Grey or Hoffman, but it isnt an album that has suffered from poor sound quality, in any iteration, from what I've heard. The box set can be had on yourmusic.com for 28 bucks.
Dusty Chalk Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Yeah, those guys are pretty picky -- I remember reading an article once about a guy who was doing a master for them -- I think it was Keyboard magazine? He was getting really picky about things.

Yikes, none of you aja addicts are online right now. i hope i made the right choice. ouch. I listened to the Mofi LP and the Cicso Lp release and the Cisco is better. Sounds cleaner and the balance between the voices and the instruments is better, the voices are too loud on the MoFi.

postjack Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Amazon.com: Tonight's the Night [Vinyl]: Neil Young: Music I don't know why this vinyl is $5.68, but I ordered it. I have only recently discovered the greatness of this album. Its one everybody should own, especially if you've ever liked grunge or dark drugged out rock. Amazon.com: Attack & Release: The Black Keys: Music stan ricker half speed mastered LP, comes with "pro" CD. I guess this means its like the CD that came with the Mudcrutch LP.

postjack Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 Amazon.com: Attack & Release: The Black Keys: Music fans of vinyl and modern blues revival rock bands need not hesitate to purchase this one. As part of the birthday festivities melody and I sat in the 2ch room and spun this. vinyl has a bit of noise but overall pretty quiet. supposedly the master came from digital, but it still sounds marvelous and analog. not the greatest sound, but still great. and of course the music is fantastic. highly recommended!
grenert Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 I was really struck by how QUIET the levels were on the record. I really have to crank up the volume to get to a normal listening level. In any case, the music absolutely rocks. My copy came with a bonus copy of the CD as well, so you really can't go wrong with picking up the vinyl. I get to see them play at Bumbershoot in a few days! fans of vinyl and modern blues revival rock bands need not hesitate to purchase this one. deepak Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 Are the rest of their albums on vinyl just as good? Attack and Release is a great album.
