RIP Jim....

When I was I think 13, my brother got a friend and me into Kentucky Fried Movie.  Little did I know then that the makers would become some of my favorite comedy film creators!

Need to watch Top Secret and Police Squad (TV series) again now....

RIP Zakir Hussain way too young at 73. The tabla legend (and son of a legend) crossed so many musical boundaries and was amazing to see perform. He also seemed like a really nice man at SFJAZZ events. Our own prodigal member @neilvg did some work with him and but I don't know if he'll even get pinged from this reference. In any event, RIP to the legend.

RIP Gordon Mah Ung, PCWorld editor and hardware journalist.  He made occasional appearances on the GamersNexus YouTube channel.  His spicy takes and ability to lambast industry incompetence and malfeasance was the stuff of legend.  Pancreatic cancer is one of the absolute worst.

RIP Sam, of Sam and Dave.

These guys were absolutely molten in their time, and their Stax hits will live forever.

Not much of a career after, but we'll always have "Soul Man," "Hold on I'm Comin'," and the rest.

Peter Yarrow was officially or unofficially the godfather of Claire's step cousin. We attended her wedding years ago and Peter played and sang Puff the Magic Dragon at the reception. Nice man.

RIP Tony Slattery.

Who is that? Well back in '79 or thereabouts we went to see the Cambridge Footlights, a showcase for comedy and acting from Cambridge University Undergrads. Traditionally participants have gone on to greatness. Been running since 1886 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footlights .

The one we saw - in Southampton - had Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson in it. Aged 20 or 21 at that point. Each of them went on to greatness.

This is them back then.

Emma Thompson (front centre) is pictured along with Stephen Fry (front left) with the rest of the Cambridge Footlights

Slattery is the guy in the pale sweater. After footlights he had a burst of fame in a satirical review show on the TV - and then nothing. Totally off the radar.

Unrecognizable now, he was making a slow come back. He'd spent the intervening 40 years in dependency and mental illness.

No sooner was he getting modestly confident in front of an audience, that he had a heart attack and died, aged 65.

Oh no! My favorite director ever. Will have more thoughts later but RIP, David. This one is a shock.

Twin Peaks is my favorite show ever. Blue Velvet, Elephant Man, and Mulholland all stone cold classics.

😢
