guzziguy Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 RIP Bill Johnson, the first American to win an Olympic Downhill Skiing Gold Medal. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2610139-bill-johnson-former-olympic-downhill-gold-medalist-dies-at-age-55?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial
TMoney Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 RIP Marvin Minsky. Great thinker, teacher, author, and AI pioneer.
skullguise Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 My family went to the MIT museum some months ago, his work was well-documented there, with so much that he spawned in his students. An amazing person. RIP......
Craig Sawyers Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 In a sense I'm kind of relieved that Minsky made it to 88; that is not a bad innings. Everyone else on the list in the last month hasn't made it out of their 50's or 60's. 1
TMoney Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) Society of the Mind Lectures: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-868j-the-society-of-mind-fall-2011/index.htm I remember getting turned on to Minsky years back when I read on Isaac Asimov's wikipedia page that the only people Asimov admitted were smarter than him were Carl Sagan and Minsky. I agree with Craig that 88 is a damn good run. Edited January 26, 2016 by TMoney
MexicanDragon Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 RIP, Abe Vigoda.http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_OBIT_ABE_VIGODA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT **BRENT**
HemiSam Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 Fish....oh no! RIP, Mr. Vigoda. Very much enjoyed your work during my formative years. HS
skullguise Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 RIP Abe. Fish was one of my favorite characters, though Barney Miller had several great ones....
Wmcmanus Posted January 27, 2016 Author Report Posted January 27, 2016 94 years old, that's more like it! RIP, Fish.
Wmcmanus Posted January 27, 2016 Author Report Posted January 27, 2016 Fucking shit, it doesn't get easier... RIP, Richie Havens: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/richie-havens-folk-icon-dead-at-72-20130422
skullguise Posted January 27, 2016 Report Posted January 27, 2016 Oh, man.......fuck......RIP Richie Havens.......
Mister X Posted January 27, 2016 Report Posted January 27, 2016 Time warp.... Quote Pursuant to Havens's request, his ashes were scattered from a plane over the site of the Woodstock festival, in a ceremony held on August 18, 2013, the 44th anniversary of the last day of the festival.
Hopstretch Posted January 27, 2016 Report Posted January 27, 2016 Always read the dateline. [emoji37]
Wmcmanus Posted January 28, 2016 Author Report Posted January 28, 2016 Well, shit... now I feel even worse. He's really dead....
Dusty Chalk Posted January 28, 2016 Report Posted January 28, 2016 I apologize if any of these are repeats, I'm beginning to lose track: Jimmy Bain (Rainbow, Dio, bassist) Dale Griffin (Mott the Hoople, drummer) Black (singer/songwriter) I always thought this song had a touch of melancholy
skullguise Posted January 28, 2016 Report Posted January 28, 2016 I think I totally missed Richie Havens when it happened....or more likely, can't remember shit. Dusty, that has more than a "touch" of melancholy, thanks for posting it. I wasn't familiar with them/him (Colin Vearncombe), very sad to read it was from an accident and he was in a coma. And only 53.... RIP all....
Dusty Chalk Posted January 29, 2016 Report Posted January 29, 2016 RIP Paul Kantner (guitarist, Jeffersons Airplane and Starship) 15 hours ago, skullguise said: Dusty, that has more than a "touch" of melancholy, thanks for posting it. I wasn't familiar with them/him (Colin Vearncombe), very sad to read it was from an accident and he was in a coma. And only 53.... RIP all.... Him -- he went by 'Black'. And it's like the opposite of the Cardigans' "Love Fool" (the latter being the saddest happy sounding song, the former being the happiest sad sounding song) -- the lyrics aren't that melancholy, that's why I said a touch. Also to explain why I liked the song so much.
10-ekips Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 At this rate, all we'll be left with is Justin Bieber! ;-p
ironbut Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 RIP Kantner. I loved the SF sound even when I was still on the east coast. When I heard of his death, all those deep feelings came rushing up. 1
HemiSam Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 Oh crap...I missed the top of Dusty's post on Thursday. Work has it so I can't keep up as much as I'd like. First world problems... RIP, Paul. Crazy creative music....the things you must have seen and experienced. HS 1
Dusty Chalk Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 Yeah, exactly. I've been East coast my entire life, but the Airplane and early Starship still epitomized the hippie sound that I associate with California hippie music. This is probably my favourite song by them: 1
