Knuckledragger Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 A girl named India whom I did not know very well OD'd on heroin earlier this week. I'd met her in the club scene sometime in 2010. She was nice enough but suffered from the telltale sings of a low self esteem. Ā I saw her follow around one deadbeat guy after another. Ā I lost contact her due to a variety of factors. Ā I've been working a lot fewer lighting gigs this year, and she sunk deeper in the drug-fueled end of nightlife. Ā The news of her demise came out on my friend's 30th birthday. Ā He had been quite close to her and was pretty devastated by her passing. Ā I'm not entirely sure how I feel about India's death. Ā I'm certainly more hardened toward the subject of opiate abuse and overdose than others. Ā Heroin killed two kids in my high school in the early 90s, and nearly claimed a third. Ā India would have turned 24 later this year, and that's certainly too young an age to go. Ā I've been dealing with whatever my deeper feelings on the issue by listening to a lot of Morphine albums. Ā After years of listening to Mark Sandman's music, I have concluded that he was most likely a raging asshat in person, but man could he write a tune.Ā
skullguise Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Still sad to see when someone falls like that, Dan....sorry to hear of someone so young wasted away. Ā The irony of Morphine to cure a Heroin OD is not lost on me, if there was irony to have. Ā And yes, I agree with your assessment of Mark's talents, but had no idea of his personality.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 This is why I hate drugs.Ā Even though I grew up in the 70's and find that whole pot culture high-larious (Cheech & Chong, That 70's Show, etc.), heroin was always a step too far in my mind.Ā And now I hear it's making a resurgence!Ā Fuck drugs. Ā Morphine was awesome.
Knuckledragger Posted December 1, 2013 Report Posted December 1, 2013 Oof. Ā Today was not the day to log on to Facebook. Ā Not only is FB telling me that it's India's 24th birthday, I found out my friend Liz lost her brother in a car accident early Thanksgiving morning. Ā I haven't seen liz in a few years, but I've kept in contact with her online. Ā She finished law school and passed the Maryland bar just a month ago. Ā There is no good time to lose a sibling, but having it happen so close to a major achievement and on a holiday is forever going to taint those events for her and her family. Ā
Torpedo Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 Yesterday died Chico Hamilton, the jazz drummer who worked with Ellington and many other big names. RIP Today Jim Hall has died too Ā Sad days for jazz fans.
Voltron Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 RIP Chico and Jim. Ā Sad indeed. Ā Very glad I got to see Jim a year or two ago.
Absorbine_Sr Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 RIP Peter O'Toole. Yeah. I loved Peter O'Toole. I will be watching The Ruling Class for sure this week. And probably My Favorite Year. And more than likely Lawrence of Arabia.
mikeymad Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 Yeah. I loved Peter O'Toole. I will be watching The Ruling Class for sure this week. And probably My Favorite Year. And more than likely Lawrence of Arabia. Ā The last two are on my watch list for today.
Absorbine_Sr Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 One of my favorite movie lines is from My Favorite Year. O'Toole's character is drunk and taking a piss in the ladies room. Woman walks in, sees him and says "Sir, this is for ladies!" O'Toole turns to her, still holding his dick and says "Madam, so is this, but sometimes I need to run some water through it." (Paraphrasing from memory)
Dusty Chalk Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 Wow, and here I was thinking I'd be the only person to have such a great love of My Favourite Year.
TMoney Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 RIP, Pete. Lawrence is one of my all time favs.
skullguise Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 One of the greats, could take any part and make it special.....aside from the couple mentioned already, there was a little-known and silly film named Creator that I liked a lot....
morphsci Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 RIP Also a huge fan of My Favorite Year.
