Shower Filters

We had a whole-house water filter back when I lived with my mom.  I changed it every once in a while for her.  Two tips -- they installed it at an angle so every time I took it off, we had to have a bucket under it.  Don't do that, have them install it straight up and down.  You'll still need a bucket, though.  The other thing she did was smart -- she installed a transparent one so you could see whether it was time to replace it or not yet.

IIRC, it wasn't particularly expensive nor expensive for the initial install, even by a professional.
