guzziguy Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 I have a cable modem that has the feature of a "land line" phone. I'm not using the phone and am tired of paying for it. I can cancel the feature but then have to supply my own cable modem. I plan on buying a modem that supports Docsis 3. Can anybody recommend for or against any particular brands or models? Thanks in advance for your advice.
Grahame Posted February 27, 2013 Report Posted February 27, 2013 Ken, Does your cable / internet provider have a list of supported cable modems? Comcast has this list http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/ I think I've seen the Motorola SB121 in Costco Amazon Has ithttp://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB6121-SURFboard-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B004XC6GJ0 (Higer priced ones have integrated WiFi if you only want one box )
guzziguy Posted February 28, 2013 Author Report Posted February 28, 2013 Hey Grahame, Thanks for the recos. Cox does have a supported list: http://ww2.cox.com/residential/orangecounty/support/tv/article.cox?articleId=b2ec95d0-7ef9-11df-5590-000000000000. The SB6121 is on the list. I'm going to Costco tomorrow anyway so will check for a modem there. If they don't have anything appropriate, I'll probably order the SB6121 from Amazon.
cetoole Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 I like my SB6121 just fine, its what I settled on a few months ago when I needed to buy a docsis 3 modem. Got it at Wal-Mart for that instantanious gratification.
guzziguy Posted February 28, 2013 Author Report Posted February 28, 2013 Thanks Colin. The nearest Wal-Mart is 45 minutes away. So it's not too instantaneous. Still, I'm heading that direct tomorrow for lunch with Augsburger and Zippy. Hmm.
Grahame Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 Got it at Wal-Mart ... Colin, in Wal Mart? What did the natives make of you ... http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/photos/top-rated/
cetoole Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 Colin, in Wal Mart? What did the natives make of you ... http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/photos/top-rated/ They had a better idea than the people of Texas. Every single person I have talked to here, within the first 3 sentances, has asked where I am from.

tkam Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 If your going to be near the store anyways I'd check and see if they will price match. I know Best Buy and Target at least have announced that they will be price matching Amazon prices.
guzziguy Posted March 6, 2013 Author Report Posted March 6, 2013 Last Friday, I had lunch with Augsburger and Zippy. Then I visited my sister next door in Thousand Oaks First we went to CostCo. They had no cable modems. Walmart was just across the street so we checked there. They had what I wanted, but it was at the online price. I asked about price matching and the manager seemed confused by the question. Eventually he decided that Walmart does price match but doesn't include any on line prices, including Amazon. Saturday evening I order a Motorola SB6121 from Amazon for $77.44 with free shipping. It arrived today. Tomorrow, I'll call Cox and swap the modems out. Thanks everybody for your advice.
