Tari Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Dave is often my first suggestion for people looking to get into Jazz or experiment with timing. He was productive until the very end of his life, releasing live albums last year at the age of 90. He will be missed. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/chi-dave-brubeck-dead-20121205,0,7126256.column
Voltron Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 My home town hero is gone! RIP Mr. Brubeck! I just went to his concert last year and he was still great. Not as great, but still great.
Dreadhead Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 (edited) RIP Dave Brubeck. I saw him in concert only once but it was an incredible concert. Edited December 5, 2012 by Dreadhead
Aura Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Damn. One of the rare jazz guys I could listen to at any time. No mood required. RIP.
Dusty Chalk Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 He died of a heart attack... :sadcat:...on his way to a heart appointment. :sadcat: It would have been his 92nd birthday tomorrow. :sadcat: :sadcat:I, unfortunately, never saw him play live. :sadcat: :sadcat:
tyrion Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 This does suck. It's amazing he continued to perform as long as he did. I think Time Out was one of the first jazz albums I bought.
TMoney Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Oh noes. Sad to see one of the all time Bay Area greats go.
Torpedo Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 RIP Dave. One of my favorite jazz musicians. Going to listen to this soon
mikeymad Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Cheers to Dave. My Dad was into him, he saw him several time way back in the day. Got my Dad's records after he passed.. Just happen to be listening to this last night... Always has been one of my go to jazz men... RIP
agile_one Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Wow, just wow. Dave made jazz accessible to the mainstream without loosing his cool. I could, and have, listened to his music forever. Saw him early on in his career at Newport Jazz fest and Storyville in Boston way back, then late when he was 80 + yo. All were memorable. RIP, Dave.
skullguise Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 You said it Gene....he was one of my first entries into Jazz, and Take Five will always be one of my favorites. Have enjoyed a lot of his other work, but as the first thing I heard, it stands above. RIP, great man.....
Wmcmanus Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Another fan here. Extremely accessible and so talented at keeping things simple and letting the music shine through in the performance. He understood that it wasn't all about him, but in the moods that his music could help to create in the listener's heart and mind. Will have to break out some vinyl tonight in his honor.
Augsburger Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Same here, he was and still is one of my all time favorites. R.I.P. Dave
ironbut Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Just heard. If you never saw Brubeck live, you really missed out.He had a way of making everyone in the audience feel like he was an old friend playing in your living room.I feel a personal loss in his passing.
bhjazz Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 (edited) Any jazz loss is a great loss. And considering Dave and what he did, the loss is even greater. RIP, Dave. EDIT: Nice article at latimes: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-dave-brubeck-appreciation-20121205,0,848294.story Edited December 5, 2012 by bhjazz
Voltron Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 This is so true, Steve. He had a way of making everyone in the audience feel like he was an old friend playing in your living room.
aardvark baguette Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 Time Out was instrumental in my jazz binge a few years ago.RIP
