skullguise Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Hostess is closing down..... http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/finance/20121116/US.Hostess.End.of.the.Road/?cid=hero_media_bos It kind of makes me sad that I went through life and never actually tried a Ho-Ho. Need to find one just for nostalgia.
Pars Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Don't worry... I think they have a half-life of 50 million years or something like that. You have plenty of time. 1
n_maher Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 I'd say that it's likely that someone will buy the rights to most of the popular brands and production will resume at some point after the liquidation. I can't help but read stuff like this along with the stuff like the USPS losing $16B last year as a result of pension/benefit issues and think that a national overhaul of entire industries (starting with the healthcare, insurance, litigation debacle) isn't coming sooner than any of us think.
The Monkey Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 There has to be some balance between the rape and pillage private equity guys and the company-be-damned labor unions. They're beginning to resemble each other very closely. 1
en480c4 Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Sno-Balls? Sno-Balls? Sno Balls? Where's the fucking Twinkies? 1
Dusty Chalk Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 That was my first thought as well. Speaking of resembling, our world is resembling a post-apocalyptic future more and more.
Tyll Hertsens Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 That was my first thought as well. Speaking of resembling, our world is resembling a post-apocalyptic future more and more. Internally or externally? Serious question actually.
aardvark baguette Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 market forced efficiency /runs away
jvlgato Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 I haven't like Twinkies since I was a kid. Now those Cherry Pies, on the other hand... man, I ate a lot of those when I was on call in the hospital as a resident, and I had missed dinner.
Wmcmanus Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 PopTarts are safe, right? I fucking hope so! Kellogg's is still a pretty strong performer.
blessingx Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Of course! ... then again... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ4yvfzBt-c
swt61 Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Oh thank God it's just the cake snacks! After reading the title I thought cute, slender gay men were becoming extinct.
thrice Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Now what will be really frightening is if a NOS Twinkie market shows up on eBay in a few months.
The Monkey Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Well, you can still get yourself a Reggie Bar, so I would anticipate it happening...
thrice Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Well, you can still get yourself a Reggie Bar, so I would anticipate it happening... Wow... my dad used to bring those home for me when he came home from work. I remember those. Huh... Buy It Now for $3.50...... hrmmmmmmm.
tkam Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Death of the Twinkie... sounds like something that might kick off the Zombie Apocalypse.
Dusty Chalk Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Now what will be really frightening is if a NOS Twinkie market shows up on eBay in a few months. What do you mean, in a few months?
HeadphoneAddict Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 There has to be some balance between the rape and pillage private equity guys and the company-be-damned labor unions. They're beginning to resemble each other very closely. Agreed.
blessingx Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 Tripling the CEOs pay from $750,000 to $2,550,000, probably didn't help either. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/11/16/1203151/why-unions-dont-shoulder-the-blame-for-hostesss-downfall/?mobile=wp
Dusty Chalk Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 Kind of pails compared to the almost one billion dollar pension debt. I mean, yeah, I hate it when I hear about golden parachutes -- I know I ain't never getting one that I don't save up for myself -- but still -- who cares?
grawk Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 If you want good management in a company that's obviously on it's way down, you have to pay a lot. Heck, I'm not in management, and the only way I'd EVER consider going to work for a company that was in dire straits financially is for 3-4x my normal hourly rate. That said, hostess outlived it's market. People are more particular about what they eat today than in years past, so any value in their brand is only going to go down. And I can't imagine repurposing the hostess brand for healthy alternatives. Maybe someone will buy their intellectual property, and then sell their products in a smaller scale, so they have a chance at success. "Fuck it, have a twinkie!" "That 5 lb Carl's Jr Burger sure was good, now finish your meal with a dozen Ho Hos!"
swt61 Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 I understand the job losses, but as far as the Twinkie goes, are we really that sad to see it go? I can certainly live just fine without them. But I do want Nabisco to bring back my fucking Bacon Thins and Twigs. You bastards!
manaox2 Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 I'm with you Steve. I'm not going to miss them, don't know someone who liked them all that much.
