Nebby Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) Looks like a sweet commuter bike! Which pannier is that? Edited May 22, 2014 by Nebby
VPI Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) I ended up changing to a Vaude pannier after looking everything over at the shop. German brand, seems pretty nice and very well laid out on the inside to carry everything I could ever want to take to work. I might get something else to just carry groceries or something at some point. Going to jam all my gym stuff in shortly and head there, if the rain stays away. Edited May 22, 2014 by VPI 3
raffy Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) Nice bike, Jeff. Clashes with your weight weenie side though Birthday ride for me today Edited May 22, 2014 by raffy 5
VPI Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 That is a crazy ride. I am contemplating driving to the gym as it is 86 here. The gym is only half a mile, but hot is hot.
Augsburger Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 I ride quite a bit but I only have to lube every couple of weeks. *Waiting for a Tice post* Raffy, you averaged 19 mph, and a average hr of 152 for 62 miles in 88 degree weather? That is impressive.. unless you were going downhill.
MexicanDragon Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 It's Florida... It's pretty much all slightly downhill. **BRENT**
shellylh Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 That is a crazy ride. I am contemplating driving to the gym as it is 86 here. The gym is only half a mile, but hot is hot. Wait, haven't you lived in TX? You think 86 is hot? That is pretty much my favorite temperature.
VPI Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) I am happy at about 64 degrees. Edited May 22, 2014 by VPI 1
justin Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 I rode on the trainer at 80f with the gas stove on this winter. Gotta prepare Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
MexicanDragon Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Anything above 72 is stupid and should be abolished. **BRENT**
VPI Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Did my first massive 1.6 mile commute this morning. Not sure I needed quite as much crap as I bought for this commute so I am going to have to come up with new places to ride the commute bike. Locker was a Dinny nightmare, full of spider webs so I had to clean that all out this morning. They look great from the outside but are really not much of a locker when you get inside. Has anyone bought the Garmin 1000 yet? I am thinking about upgrading my old 800.
Nebby Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Being a Garmin, I'd wait until a couple of firmware updates have been released. Couple of folks have already picked it up and it sounds like some folks are already having issues, so I suspect it'll be similar to every other Garmin product release. The features do look nice but I'll need to get new Garmin mounts since it's longer than the 800. My commute is going to be 9-10 miles each way, so I'm trying to decide what size pannier I should get that'll hold my lunch and a set of clothes.
VPI Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) The pannier I have works really well and has a nice computer compartment and lots of supply holders on the inside. I fit two 14oz boxing gloves, wraps, Oakley radar case, Kryptonite Fuggedaboutit u-lock and chain, iphone, polar water bottle and keys last night. The best thing is I am carrying it as a briefcase today and it does not look out of place. I am going to take advantage of the REI sale this weekend to get some grocery bag panniers I think. What are you commuting on, the Niner? Edited May 23, 2014 by VPI
Dreadhead Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Damn you guys are making me jelous riding. I'm just working, eating, gaining weight, and then more working. I hope to get a ride or two in on the weekend but I have a lot of other shit to do as well.
Nebby Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Yup, the Niner. I've been looking at REI's selection too because of the sale. Kinda impressed your bag fit all that and the gloves!
VPI Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 yeah the gloves are massive. It is a nice bag but I know Ortlieb is highly rated for a lot less money.
nikongod Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 I have the Ortleib Grocery bag. http://www.ortliebusa.com/prodInfo.asp?pid=35&cid=2 It is mega convenient with its zip-lock style closure, but it does not stay shut if overpacked.
n_maher Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Jeff, Nice that you've already put the commuter to work. And let me know if you do decide to upgrade the 800, I kind of have the itch to upgrade the 500 and started looking the other day... Me, weather is currently looking pretty awful until Monday but I'm hoping to get out for a decent ride at some point this weekend. So far this year I've barely managed anything other than commuting miles.
grawk Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 rei's sale covers the garmins. I've been looking at the touring + today.
Nebby Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) Some of the Garmin's are discounted, but you can't use the coupon on any items "with gps technology". It would've been too nice to use that coupon on the new Edge 1000. Edited May 23, 2014 by Nebby
VPI Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 The price for the 800 package is pretty great if you need all of that stuff
n_maher Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 rei's sale covers the garmins. I've been looking at the touring + today. Not based on what I see... ANNV2014: Your cart doesn't contain at least 1 qualifying coupon item. If it applied to the 800 bundle I'd buy it in a second.
