justin Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 im much closer than montana, $80 would be low for LBS packing, but that's no excuse for throwing an assembled bike into a cardboard box
Pars Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Many bike shops would be clueless as to how to pack a bike correctly for shipment. Here is a good guide as to how to pack a bike properly:http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/507984-how-pack-bike-101-a.html
justin Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 well, to make things worse, i just measured the bike as i thought it looked a little small and i can't find a size label anywhere on the frameafter checking the dimensions of the frame from Surly, i don't believe this is a 54cm, but is a 50 or 52. worst. seller. ever.
Nebby Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Wow Justin, that bike looked great from that picture too! Sucks that the seller had no clue about how to ship and pack a bike....or anything about bike sizes either.
justin Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 if the seller is interested, they can give me $1100 for a new 54cm frame, plus what it costs for a LBS to build a bike, and i'll ship back the scratched smaller frame. but that seems unlikely to happen
grawk Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 I'd just file a paypal claim, and let them send someone to pick up the bike if they want it back
Dreadhead Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Yeah I'd get all the money back and give them back the bike if they are willing to pay shipping or come for it. In other news a week after I buy my Di2 setup fucking SRAM releases their eTap shifting. First world problems or 1% or whatever but I'm still fucking pissed.
MexicanDragon Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Sell/return Di2?Justin, I'd probably return it as well, even if I had to eat some of the shipping, then keep looking.**BRENT**
Pars Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 You're better off with the Di2 me thinks... 1
Dreadhead Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 I think Chris is probably right. The SRAM system doesn't appear to be as polished shifting wise and doesn't have the computer based tuning of Shimano's system. Also it turns out that SRAM may not even be in final production on the units so it be next year before I get anything.
raffy Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Just curious Chris, where did your source the DI2 kit from and how did you get your LBS to do it for you without any hard feelings? I'd love to upgrade even to 6800 mechanical but I just refuse to pay LBS prices for the groupset. I suppose I could bring an outside gruppo to them but I really don't wanna deal with the attitude they might give for doing so. It's not my problem if I can get shit from the UK at less than their cost......................
grawk Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 my wrench is happy to do anything I ask him to do (as long as I pay him to do it). He's built 2 bikes for me using parts I sourced elsewhere. Charged me $75 for one and $50 for the other.
Dreadhead Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) Raffy, I bought it through my LBS and they gave me a good price that was about 7% over what I would pay online but included install, setup and service. I also got full warranty etc. Also I couldn't find the exact combination I wanted online. Background: I've bought so much stuff through them and I have a good relationship with them so on most things it's a less than 10% upcharge over online. In particular cases I've even paid less than online through them because the manager will use his personal industry discount to buy me things. I know they need to make money and I like saving money so it works out overall and I gain access to mechanics and service whenever I need it at very good rates. I'm very lucky because I know Jeff on the other hand went to a different place around here and had a very different experience in that they never gave him any real discounts. justin Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Sell/return Di2? Justin, I'd probably return it as well, even if I had to eat some of the shipping, then keep looking. **BRENT**lol...seller is going the "my listing said no returns!" route. so i've started an eBay return which leads to a dispute if it's not accepted. don't think this person knows how the internets work.. 2
raffy Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Damn Chris, that is a great arrangement deal for you....you get to pay a really fair price plus still retain goodwill with the LBS.
Mister X Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 30 miles tonight put the three month total at 2007 miles.Looks like I have some work to do if I'm going to hit 3000 miles before the weather changes. 5
Dreadhead Posted September 6, 2015 Report Posted September 6, 2015 Well done man that's some serious mileage. I'm aiming at 70 miles a week these days, though I will hit 100 this week I think.I did 27 today with my father-in-law who's been riding a LOT and as predicted he whupped me good. He's way stronger than me. I console myself in that he's only 50. 3
Dreadhead Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Played hooky yesterday and rode my first metric century of the year. It went a lot better than I expected and I averaged somewhere around 16mph. Felt really good to get out for that long but it's not going to be a regular occurrence for many years I'm afraid. I have a century in about a month. I also learned that the SRAM power-dome cassettes have a bunch of rubber bands that serve as quieting devices after one of them failed and started messing with my shifting. Neat piece of design but annoying to have to pay $28 to replace them.
n_maher Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Nicely done, Chris! I'm cautiously optimistic that my century this weekend will go ok but nervous that my longest ride this year is only in the mid-30s. I'm trying to concentrate on staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest this week.
Mister X Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) Finally a return to temps in the 70s....90s was crazy for September! If you missed it the current promo at the Feed is a "Bonk Breaker Fuel & Recover Nutrition Kit". The kit includes one Bonk Breaker Energy Bar, one Bonk Breaker Protein Bar, and one bag of Bonk Breaker Chews. A $8 value, FREE. FaceBook link----> https://www.facebook.com/thefeedme/posts/912153808865340 I would prefer the Strawberry chews (with caffeine) but the tangerine/orange ones are not bad. raffy Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Just bought myself bike # 2 on the bay.....I think I got a great deal on it http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMC-Team-Machine-SLR02-Dura-Ace-/271975131144?nma=true&si=2ZCEXPySM3XIvCw5n6FQO%2Flg%2FN0%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 3
n_maher Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 #notcalfee Still looks nice. I'm targeting an acquisition for the fall potentially, if deals start popping up like they have in years past as the season fades.
