luvdunhill Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Licensing and patents No licenses or payments are required to be able to stream or distribute content in AAC format.[36] This reason alone makes AAC a much more attractive format to distribute content than MP3, particularly for streaming content (such as Internet radio).[citation needed] However, a patent license is required for all manufacturers or developers of AAC codecs.[37] For this reason free and open source softwareimplementations such as FFmpeg and FAAC may be distributed in source form only, in order to avoid patent infringement. (See below under Products that support AAC, Software.) key: source form only
grawk Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Right. But this does AAC but doesn't do alac and aiff.
luvdunhill Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Oh. I agree then it's backwards. Nice catch.
Dusty Chalk Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 According to Wiki, ALAC was rendered open-source in late 2011 (a year ago), so they may be basing their decision on old information.
Eric5676 Posted September 13, 2012 Author Report Posted September 13, 2012 If you have the patience, that AVS thread has basically gotten into a back and forth about AIFF and it's best for you all to read it for yourselves but long/short: There's ways to get around the problem and so forth so IMO...best read but others may come away different...I don't see a "deal breaker" situation here.

Eric5676 Posted September 16, 2012 Author Report Posted September 16, 2012 Do they pay you for the advertising? If not, you should approach them and offer your services. All I'm doing is occasionally skimming some forum posts and summing up the few nuggets in between arguments and nitpicking.
Dusty Chalk Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 Yeah, a couple of us encouraged him, showing our appreciation for not having to read the AVS forums posts.
recstar24 Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 Yeah, a couple of us encouraged him, showing our appreciation for not having to read the AVS forums posts. Yup. Thanks eric - I appreciate your taking the time. I would rather read it here than somewhere else.
Eric5676 Posted September 16, 2012 Author Report Posted September 16, 2012 Yup. Thanks eric - I appreciate your taking the time. I would rather read it here than somewhere else. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/asset-whs-manual.html Apparently this is useful for taking care of any format issues or conversion issues to get around any limitations. Legit, of course.
grawk Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 Or just play the music on your computer, and use the oppo as a dac.
Eric5676 Posted September 16, 2012 Author Report Posted September 16, 2012 Or just play the music on your computer, and use the oppo as a dac. These sorts of simple, straight forward answers simply won't do on a forum like AVS. What's wrong with you?
Dusty Chalk Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Or we could hack the Oppo's OS... Is that more like it?
grawk Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 So prior to my current job, I'd never have considered plugging a hard drive into a bluray player as being preferable to having a media server. That said, NOW I'd do it. Stupid "you can't bring a non-gov't owned computer, or anything with internet access to work" rule. So yah, I'd love it if the oppo played alac from a usb connected hard drive. Someone make that happen, please. I'd spend the $1000 on the oppo, plus money on the headphone amp (why did I sell my g-lite?)..maybe if I bring in the mini and apogee, but turn off wifi they'll allow it?
morphsci Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 You may not even have to spend money on the headphone amp as the Oppo has one. Although quality is an unknown.
grawk Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 The VTGs are pretty easy on headphone amps, so maybe it's good enough. /me starts budgeting. Or maybe I'll get the M4 I was promised ages ago?
Dusty Chalk Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 It depends on the facility, but most of the facilities that I've ever heard of won't let you take anything with wireless capability into the lab, unless it is defeatable. True story, albeit second-hand -- a certain person I know had to turn over their laptop to the security techs, so that they could take the internal wireless card out (obviously not the kind that's built into the motherboard). These days, that separation is a lot harder to find than you'd think.
grawk Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 I don't want to take it into the lab, I want to have it at my desk, not in the secure area.
Grahame Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 ^ Sansa Clip+ or 2 , and lots of microSD cards?
