CherryBomb Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 Got an email advertisement today introducing a new line of Samsung hybrid amps. Here is a link to the product page: http://www.samsung.com/us/2012-vacuum-tube-amplifier/?cid=smc-nahq-mult-0702-10000079
crappyjones123 Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 wonder what tubes those are. looks cool. are there any similar consumer/mainstream products?
Jon L Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 (edited) Rogue recently launced a line of tube/class D hybrids: http://www.rogueaudi...ucts_Medusa.htm One of the Samsung offerings has tubes built right into the speaker enclosure, which may not have been a decision made solely on sonic quality alone DA-E750_Front_m_12 by drjlo1, on Flickr Edited July 10, 2012 by Jon L
grawk Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 I'd assume the only thing hooked up on the tube was the heater. 1
RudeWolf Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 I'd only buy a Samsung tablet or a smartphone with tubes.
jwzhan Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Wireless? And I thought Micro-B can't be used for line-out.
jp11801 Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 I am infinitely uninterested in this digital amp with a tube marketing plan
ironbut Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I'm with jp regarding the amp. I would love to know what tubes are being used and who is supplying them though. If this amp gets any traction at all, some lucky tube manufacturer is going to have to build a new plant!

spritzer Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I'm trying to get some trade info on this line as I'm curious as well. Something like the 6922 alternatives spring to mind as the tube of choice. It's clearly a dual triode and normal noval size. I'd sure like to see the circuit as Samsung has an army of engineers so they could come up with something cool.
spritzer Posted July 14, 2012 Report Posted July 14, 2012 Lovely tube but an odd choice for a linestage.
Knuckledragger Posted July 14, 2012 Report Posted July 14, 2012 I have a 1969 McIntosh C-22 preamp that uses six 12AX7s. Of course, that means exactly jack shit.
spritzer Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 Plenty of preamps use the ECC83 but many designers think that with our low gain preamps and high output sources a tube with a mu this high can only lead to issues.
ironbut Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 If wishes were fishes,.. I know this is a wild ass shot in the dark, but a few years back some engineers at the old Blackburn Mullard plant started producing a new plannar design 12ax7 equivalent under the MicroTech (sp) label. I bought a few of them. And while they weren't as dimensional as the Raytheon 5751 windmill getters that I love in many applications, they are amazingly transparent and found a permanent home in the voltage stage of my phono stage. To make a long story short, not long after they began to sell these, the CRT (their main products) demand from China dried up and MicroTech went belly up and all their assets were sold at auction. I was bummed! Myself and several other guys who'd tried this tube could only hope that some rich audio aware person would buy the design and tooling and start production again. The pictures of the tube that Samsung is using looks similar but without a 360, I couldn't be sure. But, the timing is right (plenty of time to buy, move and produce the assembly line). Wishful thinking probably!
luvdunhill Posted July 15, 2012 Report Posted July 15, 2012 unlikely. why? guess who owns this company and what they happen to manufacture. http://www.shuguangelec.com

ironbut Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 Yeah, I read a thread where folks were saying that they own Shuguang Electron but have yet to see any evidence of that. I don't say that they aren't but Shuguang appears to be associated with LG Phillips. http://www.shuguangelec.com/en/profile.asp
Leonardo Drummond Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Did you guys know about this? http://www.thevintageknob.org/samsung-SP-01.html
