Absorbine_Sr Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 (edited) Say a prayer for one of the great musicians/singers of our time: http://www.levonhelm.com/ Edited April 18, 2012 by Absorbine_Sr Quote
acidbasement Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Aw shit. This is sad news indeed. I'm going to crank up The Band. Quote
swt61 Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Good vibes to Levon. Levon was a pretty good actor too. 1988's 'End of the Line', with Levon, Wilford Brimmley, Mary Steenburgen, Holly Hunter, Kevin Bacon ... is a favorite of mine. Quote
agile_one Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Hang in there, Levon. Time for some Band on the cans. Quote

Just now (through Youtube) realized the guy was a drummer/lead singer. Wow, mad respect. How have I never actually seen The Last Waltz? WTF? Quote
swt61 Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 WTF indeed! That is a great rockumentary. Quote
NightWoundsTime Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 I own it on vinyl and have listened many times, and flip to FLACs's regularly. And it's Scorcese. But if I'd seen it I would have surely registered his status. Quote
ironbut Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 shame on you Matt! Just that fact that it's directed by Scorsese should clue you in that it's something special. This is terrible news indeed. I have a feeling that Levon has done and seen enough to fill a half dozen full lives. Quote
TMoney Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 A "memorial" viewing of the Last Waltz on bluray is in order for this weekend. In the meantime, there is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceRg_rxXQ_E Quote
acidbasement Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 I played drums in a reenactment of The Last Waltz a couple of years ago, and got very familiar with The Band's music, something I had inexplicably failed to do until then. This is a sad day. Quote
blessingx Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 The best 5 minutes in concert footage ever... vidlink Quote
VPI Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 I had the chance to attend a Midnight Ramble back in 2010 with Levon's band and Steve Earle performing. I have been a huge fan of The Band since first hearing them but after spending an afternoon and evening hanging out at his house I can say that he was probably one of the few celebs I have met that I would have loved to hang out with as he seemed like my kind of guy. Absorbine_Sr Posted April 20, 2012 Author Report Posted April 20, 2012 The best 5 minutes in concert footage ever... vidlink I agree. My favorite part of the film and though Levon is great here, when Mavis Staples breaks into her verse I get chills down my spine. I'm waiting for my amp to get back to have a memorial viewing of The Last Waltz. Quote

The Rambles were great. Levon Helm was an icon in our area (I lived perhaps 15 minutes from his home) and his loss was certainly felt strongly here. Edited April 21, 2012 by revolink24 Quote
emelius Posted April 21, 2012 Report Posted April 21, 2012 The Rambles were great. Levon Helm was an icon in our area (I lived perhaps 15 minutes from his home) and his loss was certainly felt strongly here. his twitter account was @levonhelmramble...sad stuff, obviously...but some progressive & warming comments/replies as well... I was very glad to hear that Robbie Robertson did visit Levon in the hospital...to be a fly on the wall... I'm borrowing The Last Waltz blu-ray that I bought for my dad...I've seen it numerous times but it never disappoints...later, I may even dig up the Basement Tapes...I know that, depending on which version you have, Levon had limited participation (he left the Band for a spell)...However, I've always thought of the Band as a group independent of its members...sounds silly, I know...but, unless they were performing with Bob Dylan, they didn't seem to be following anyone's lead... It's great that he's left such a body of work...I've been to a few Dylan concerts, but, obviously, their peak was before my time... Quote
