Damn I'm sad I am missing this. Please feel free to make drunken prank calls to me on Skype or something. currawong1 is my id. I'll be around on and off this weekend.

By "more treble" I meant it the treble isn't congested as you get with most of the ATs with the regular pads. It's certainly not bright, and between the mids and whatever treble peak is there, everything is fairly subdued. The peak is probably somewhere around 8-10k. Roughly speaking, if you have a regular AT, roll up a couple of tissues and stuff them under the pads and you'll get a similar result, depending on which pair you have.

Someone buy an SC-1 and 404 through Craig and let me borrow them and I'll happily do the comparison.

If I'd known the LCD-2s and these were at the AVIC show, I might have made more of an effort to go.
-
Yes, indeed I did, but I know what I want and I have a fair idea I know what I'm getting and how it will go with what I have.
-
The problem is that every time anyone even remotely suggests that a headphone might have been created that can compete with the O2, KG builds an even more insane stat amp that ensures nothing ever will. Oh, Skylab has finally reviewed the LCD-2 and orgasmed all over them so now the HF hype meter is off the planet.

I hadn't actually noticed the service last time I looked, so I might have to sign up as well. Hard to argue with the price. The music I was referring to is on the recordings page, where there's some interesting stuff. I agree there seems to be more life to the music than I'm used to. I would guess that no attempt was made to "clean up" the recordings afterwards before or after digitising them.

IIRC I posted this on a weekend, so I'm wondering if any of you actually saw this thread and tried any of the music?

I finally got around to upgrading, so now I have a 15" 2.66 GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro. I got the 1680x1050 matte screen, which unfortunately makes my cheap Samsung 24" look horrid.

Yeah, after the goddamn HD-800s, HF-2s, Stax... I'm not displeased though, as I listen to the HD-800s daily, but they took a bit of system tweaking to get them to where I liked them. The HE-5s almost did it for me and the O2s are a bit dark, but I am thinking the KGSSHV will fix that. I'm figuring the LCD-2s are considerably better than the HE-5s in this case. I'll be most pleased if I can finally displace the HD-800s.

Nice one. Now I can chat while on the train or whatever.

Happy Birthday Mr Crazy Mexican. Hope I get 'round to meeting you one of these days.

spritzer: Did you end up getting the Japanese pots?
-
So I could build one of these with the set of boards from Justin I have on order?
-
Canjam is unfortunately out for me this year, much as I want to meet everyone. Family has to take precedence and even 3 days away would be considered too much for reasons I wont get into here.

Ridleyguy: I would strongly encourage you to re-read your Head-Case welcome PM, as I think you would agree, if you got a feel for the forums first, instead of treating people here like noobs, that this isn't Head-fi.

The commercial cables I have only have the ground connected on one end to the shield. When I replied this to someone on HF asking about it, AMB replied that there were circumstances where it would be ideal to have the ground connected between two components, IIRC when it was ideal for their to be a common ground reference. I doubt it's critical though, but someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I just had a bit of a wild idea: I'm selling my Audiovalve RKV, so I am thinking if I sold it to someone in the US I could, with their permission, shipped to Canjam, set up a summit-fi table, then send it to them. I could also see if I can't persuade Kingwa to send one of the Audio-gd DACs over at the same time and start a loaner program for one in the same manner. Thoughts?

It'd be fucking hilarious IMO if these basically knock off the top-tier dynamics. A 3-person operation that tells the German makers where to go would be hilarious. Must (unfortunately) add these to my list. So much for thinking it'd be over last year.

If you do open a Mini, use a large, sharp kitchen knife, not a putty knife, it's easier. The rest isn't hard, if you can find the correct drive to replace the one in the Mini, which is slightly irregular.

Happy Birthday Ari.

Some gear pr0n, which I shot after cleaning the RKV. I'm happy with the shot because the light around my room is crap, even with my rack fairly near the window. The light uses fluorescent bulbs, which only serves to screw things up more. I only realised afterwards the tubes were in focus, so I decided it was my favourite shot. -

Reks: Those shots look really good. They capture the feeling very well. That knife reminds me of old Japanese katanas and the patterns formed from the making of the blades. An old pic from a local flower garden which I have on my desktop now: A couple of years ago, my 18-200 was in for repair, so I was forced to use my 35mm only, which got me back into fixed lenses. We had late-blooming Cherry Blossoms around the apartments which were starting to die, but I snapped some quite nice shots regardless. -
I had another listen to them, out of the P-1u this time, with a Yamaha SACD player, which was better than the Sony POS I tried last time. Not sure whether it was the different amp or that the headphones weren't new, but the bass was more mellow than I remember, not intruding as much as it did when I last tried them, however they are still very mid-forward, too much so IMO. The new style of pads used in the X-series pushes the drivers away from the ears, so you get more treble, but I get the impression that the treble is a big peak or two above the mid-range, as the upper-mids/lower treble seemed to be somewhat weak. I'd say they are good for AT woody fans, especially if you're looking for something more balanced than the limited edition woodies. If you don't want the bass, then you can get the A2000X, which are probably somewhat closer to a closed AD2000. You'll be doing some funny arc shaping if you're like me and don't have a big head.

Has the DAC landscape gotten convoluted lately?
Currawong replied to Superpredator's topic in Home Source Components
I actually had the idea to suggest one before, but the negativity towards them put me off suggesting it. If someone in the States is seriously interested in managing it, Kingwa would probably be up for it.
