That sucks. I just lost a lot of personal possessions in storage in my house in Australia when a blocked sewer spewed up, twice, a heap of shit all over the floor. Unfortunately, because the room where it was happening was closed off, the (large) family living there didn't notice until it had left a couple of inches of shit across the floor and finally gone under the door on the other side.

Thanks very much for this. Now I need to motivate my brain to not be lazy and sit down and collate everything and build a Mouser project. I have a BOM for the KGSS from someone else which will help.

This is what I'm thinking. I can't find easy alternatives for some of the stuff that's missing from the PSU and I'm sure it's going to drive me to insanity right now. Right now I've got my dynamic rig besting my 'stat rig, which means I need a serious end-game amp. Should I start by stuffing Justin's boards that I have, using the up-rated component list for the main board and do the PSU using the regular BOM until the HV PSU is ready? Or should I just take the easy option and wait for you guys to finish everything and just get whatever kit/Mouser project etc. results? Soldering stuff I am sure I have the patience for, beyond a case, jacks etc and wire. Searching for bits and hassling people for help I don't think I can be bothered doing. Shamelessly quoted because I will want to easily find this later I'm sure.

Symphones "MAGNUM" pre-order and discount
Currawong replied to Rhydon's topic in Product Annoucements
Find a hex key that fits the screws holding the drivers in, pop them out and plug the 3 holes on the plastic behind the diaphragm (not the ones behind the voice coil) with some Blu Tak or whatever it's called there. That may possibly fix the bass issue. I'd hate to think all this latest effort and expense was just for 3 holes. -

Currawong replied to Rhydon's topic in Product Annoucements
Update: Rhydon came through in the end. The drivers have 3 holes in the back and now have more bass, and a less peaky treble, something akin to how HF-1s sound, but with everything a lot better. Kickass imaging to my ears, better than my 404LE/T1S rig and the HD-800s. Probably quite a bit of that is as much to do with the amps as the headphones themselves. I'm very pleased with them. -
Stupid question but need real help
Currawong replied to boomana's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of nights ago, so my guess is that they just flake out sometimes and need a restart. -

Your Airport Express is your network? If so, just un-plug it and plug it in again. Mine flakes out occasionally in this way. On your Mac, in the menu bar at the top of the screen, on the right, do you have an icon for the wireless at all? It looks like a striped fan showing signal strength like cell phones do. If not, we can take care of that another way. I'll be active in the chat in just over a couple of hours if you want live help. -
I'm listening with the 404LE more than the LNS these days. Maybe I'm just getting used to the more forward mids. It helps that if you lose seal with the 404LE, the bass doesn't explode like it does with the LNS. Moving this other discussion to a more appropriate thread... Mouser, which kindly redirected me to their Japanese site, lists so many of the PS parts out of stock, some of it until December, that I'm going to have to ask for help just finding some of the parts (I know enough to put the right things in the right places and the right way around, just not enough about types of parts or about transistors). I don't like asking people for help, but I'm thinking I might just have to swallow my pride and start a thread here for myself. The resistors, caps and diodes should be ok, but FETs and MOSFETs are going to be an issue.

Congrats Nate and nice work on the shelves. Vicky: Crap about your ankle. My "living with pain" involves my neck, which can be very unpleasant at times. I recommend finding a good Chinese doctor, emphasis on "good". They can help, somewhat. I'm at home instead of at work. I tried driving to work, but about 180mm/7in of rain has dropped since last night and after an hour of sitting only a short distance from my apartment, I called work and told them it's not going to happen. They told me they didn't mind if I was late, but I told them I wouldn't even make it by lunch time, when my classes finish, things were so bad. Like last year, the river across the road is close to bursting its banks and now the TV has a continuous scroller stating that they are starting evacuations in various places and that the trains have stopped. Love the Asian monsoon, not. Got a video this time of the river as I went across the bridge. The road on the other side was the one that partially fell into the river last year: MobileMe Gallery The water is over 15ft higher than when it's not raining, to give you an idea.

There's a javascript bug in Safari 5. If you installed the Javascript Blacklist extension, you'll get more crashes as a result. Maybe other extensions will make it worse as well.

Happy Birthday Mr Stax.

To me, forward mids and collapsed soundstage, especially with demanding music, are the typical characteristics of the cheap amps I've owned or tried. I can see people being happy to have a US made alternative to the Little Dot amps though.

I can see the first feedback report: "Bought a cable, but the coconut was confiscated by customs."

Has the DAC landscape gotten convoluted lately?
Currawong replied to Superpredator's topic in Home Source Components
I remember in elementary school being biased against Chinese made products. I think everyone, including Kingwa himself, wants to get some idea how his gear compares to the highly respected brand names. I don't think it matters that you have a CD player rather than a DAC. The only thing that is going to matter other than ensuring everyone involved is reliable and has a suitable degree of experience and gear, is that they have a balanced amp, as half the DAC circuitry is negated using the SE outputs (and the THD off the top of my head, is slightly higher SE). -

I have the go-ahead for a Reference 7 loaner program if anyone is interested, I just need to start a thread over there. It'll be for people with serious gear/experience already, so now's your chance. -
Additional memory (Macintosh)
Currawong replied to archosman's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Click on the Apple Menu and select "About This Mac". Click on the "More info..." button in the window and the Apple System Profiler will open up. What "Model Identifier" do you get in it? From that, it's easy to find out online what your maximum memory options are. -
If none of the music in iTunes is from the store, move the music folder into /Users/Shared then create a new user with administrator privileges and delete the old, original admin user. With the new admin user, either move the music folder into that user's folder, or tell iTunes where to look for it by holding down the Option key when you open iTunes.

These Crack comments + my RKV experience seem to validate my original theory regarding HD-800s and grunty tube amps. Might have to revise it to HD-800s + good OTL tube amp (+ re-cable if you're so inclined) = win.

Another late-joiner here. Most of all, this thread is an example of one of the main reasons I regret not being able to go to Canjam, which is to meet you great people. I've worked with quite a few gay people, some managers and some co-workers, as I spent 5 years in Sydney, which is the gay mecca of Australia, and it's all the same to me, you are who you are. I have quite a few funny stories too. Actually, on Thursday, on the way out from teaching an English class, I ran into the gay karaoke teacher. He's 60 or so and very flamboyant, with flashy clothes, Hello Kitty slippers (for inside buildings as we take our shoes off at the door) a demeanour that might be described as being like he's permanently drunk. I had just taken a piss and walked out of the toilet, whereupon seing me he asked (in Japanese), "How do you say 'urinate' in English?" The middled-aged and very conservative secretary, who heard this thought the whole thing highly amusing. Anyway, my custom title suggestion: Got wood?

Ditto. Though my power bill is bad enough already as it is...must encourage someone appropriate to do a board run one of these days. It's one design that I can get perfectly suited, if expensive, cases for locally, along with a compact drill press. I thought they had potential, if they fixed all the issues with them. I guess Audeze got there first. I'm sure though if I don't like the overall tonal balance, that one or another orthohead will have suitable damping guidance to rectify the situation to my tastes.
-
Everyone on HF (read: a single person or two) is now going around saying that all Stax people (read: you) hate orthos now after your comments there. I think though that Nankai is shooting himself in the foot pricing the HE-6s so high, especially with the LCD-2 attracting so much attention now. They need to be $995 I reckon, and he needs to stop with the conspiracy theories when someone says something nice about his competitor.

I can't help wondering actually if, in these plots, we aren't seeing the effects of the housing resonate below 50 Hz, as there is a steep drop-off before the slow one.
-
I was expecting stories of the lights in the room flickering when the T2 was switched on. I'm a bit surprised that, as well as the "quiet" rule, there wasn't one about no wet or greasy hair. Of course, people ARE stupid and don't think.

Waterfall plots: Explains the good bass. I guess they're quick. LCD-2: Qualia 010: 007/717:

I was thinking more of the limited woodies, where the treble is congested until you stuff the pads a bit to get your ears further from the drivers. I should have said this in my post. I felt the bass was better in the W1000X than in the W11, W10LTD and W10VTG. I don't know why the W5000 doesn't have the same problem, but I haven't spent much time with one. What was apparent though is that the ~X models, as a result of the thicker pads, have a better overall presentation. It would be very interesting to know which ATs used the same drivers (or, like Grado, the same driver but with different coatings). I need to check if it wasn't the AT amp that wasn't causing the W1000X to have more bass than when I tried it with the Luxman. For some idiotic reason I don't think to check these kinds of things when I am listening.
