  1. I only see clockwise no matter what. That's funny; I'd always imagined myself as a left brain person. Like an amusing little palm-reading type exercise I guess...
  2. Wow, I just learned a new term put-down term: "wallplugger." Edit: also lol at 36% reduction in timing errors with audiophile power cord.
  3. I will always remember Peyton Manning as the second best quarterback of his era.
  4. The lawyer circuit.
  5. OK, I don't know much about TVs, but why does everybody only talk about resolution vs distance? If you're sitting far enough, shouldn't all performance parameters be less noticeable? Contrast, speed, color.... maybe not black levels. In that case, shouldn't the main concerns turn to cost and reliability, as opposed to image quality issues?
  6. Here's a Sharp on sale right now SHARP Sharp 42-inch LC-42SB45UT 1080p LCD HDTV : Home Theater & Audio | Dell
  7. Still way better than "Alpha Pro Excellent."
  8. I'm sure it's pretty good; I've heard the original Buffalo. I'm not railing against the Buffalo32 at all. It's just that sometimes people clearly let their enthusiasm/pride cloud their judgment. Like the whole "$500 in parts makes it automatically equal to any <$2500 commercial product." Really?
  9. I haven't heard the Sabres much, but I'm so annoyed by the kids on Twisted Pear's jock. I know it's fun to build stuff yourself, and the Buffalo32 is probably a nice enough DAC, but some of them think it's like this holy grail of DACness and pair it with the Beta22 like it's some kind of ultimate unbeatable setup. It just feels like they're just extrapolating the Beta22's rep to anything else that's DIY. Yeah OK I'm sure it's nicer than whatever junk they had before... that doesn't really tell me anything.
  10. I like to check the Forbes (formerly Mobil) restaurant guide real quick for restaurants. It's less restrictive than the Michelin; I've been disappointed by Michelin before, too. Mobil Travel Guide: Listing Restaurants of Boston, MasNoNoNoNoNoNosetts
  11. Pshh... sub doesn't match.
  12. I've been on a bit of a metalcore kick lately, namely Himsa's Courting Tragedy and Disaster album and various Darkest Hour albums. But I went back to regular metal in the past couple days and am enjoying Municipal Waste's Massive Aggressive (American thrash) and Mors Principium Est's The Unborn (Finnish melodeath). Good shit.
  13. You might like Simone through the VTGs. When I first got mine, Opeth's Watershed album was still pretty hot, and, as flawed as the album is overall, the first track sounds pretty great when the chick comes in (through VTGs).
  14. Kashi is the worst. I'm eating pasta in red sauce.
  15. I like the VTGs and the W5000s. I would say the VTGs are by far the safer choice: not picky about amps or head shapes at all. W5000s are notoriously picky for both. Can't comment on any others except for the L3000, which I also really like. Never tried it out of anything other than top-shelf equipment, though.
  16. I'm mildly surprised someone went for the KGSS w/o planning for the O2s...
  17. That's weird and a bit shady-sounding...
  18. Saints
  19. As I'm having trouble sourcing the Emotiva stuff, I'm leaning heavily towards this: Outlaw Audio Reviews are strong, although the USB DAC part seems iffy. Still, it pretty much does everything and with lots of power. Anyone heard it?
  20. The ortho nerds tend to need some more gain than most of us. Owners of old AKGs as well. But yeah, unity or 2x gain is probably fine for me.
  21. I had thought about that kinda configuration before as well. I believe Fallenangel does his digital that way. Well, he did at some point for sure. Anyways, I didn't do it, because I didn't have a North Star or Buffalo, and the I2S input just limits DAC choices so badly.
  22. Oh I didn't see that level adjustment there. A very awkward way to adjust volume, though. I don't think she'd want to have to give it ye olde reacharound each time... Anyways, it looks like it's OOS at the moment. Also, Emotiva's preamp is $400 by itself. Guess I'll try to Gon/ebay/CL some used stuff.
  23. I thought about Emotiva, but I can't find that UPA-2 for sale right now. And can it really be better than something similarly priced but designed by Nelson Pass (80s Adcom) or John Curl (90s Parasound)? Am I putting too much into name recognition? Man I hate power amps without volume control.
  24. OK, so I'm trying to build a stereo system from scratch for the gf. So far, I managed to find a pair of used Maggie MG10s, but I still need a dac and amp for an htpc as source. And probably a sub, but I'll save that for later. I'm trying to shoot for 100W to 250W rms, which is what the manual says I should do. I want to keep the budget tight, as she's no audiophile; when I'm not there, they're most likely not going to play music. I'm shooting for under $700 used for the dac/amp. I've managed to come up with a few budget ideas: - vintage Adcom based system with maybe the 600 dac, 555 amp, and some kinda pre - Outlaw's RR2150 - old NAD integrated plus a dac? I really don't know what to look for as far as these go... Or should I just go for a newer HT receiver for an all-in-one solution? I can't imagine it'd sound as good as stuff that's made purely for audio, though.
  25. Yes! I miss those triple headers.
