Belated birthday greetings! Cheers

Oh, and speaking of UC Davis, I saw Desmond Tutu speak while I was in school there. It was during the anti apartheid demonstrations and the UC system was rife with sit-ins and students occupying buildings, etc. It was a truly moving experience, even in my animal house phase (has it ended?). I had been working as an intern for the California Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy and he spoke too. The magic of the internet produced a video of the whole event, so I'm going to relive it shortly. Here it is in case anybody would possibly be interested. https://video.ucdavis.edu/media/TutuA+A+Celebration+of+Human+Rights/1_lsfznxso/25823992 RIP Bishop Tutu

RIP artist Wayne Thiebaud at 101. He was a professor at my alma mater UC Davis so I saw his work early in life. He is most famous for his cakes and ice creams and such, but I loved his streetscapes of SF and also his quirky portraits. My dad grew up next door to Richard Diebenkorn, and Thiebaud was influenced by him and his city streets and parks always reminded of him (not an original or unique observation, just to be clear). RIP Prof. after a very good innings. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2021/12/26/obituaries/wayne-thiebaud-dead.amp.html

Bon Anniversaire and Joyeux Noël from France! Cheers!

I saw this post in the wee hours in a jet lag haze and couldn't remember what thread it was in when I remembered to respond. Thanks for the offer, but we have a direct flight to SF so I won't be dropping by this year. Cheers!

I was going to say that it was some typically anti-festool internet bullshit but I hoped Steve would chime in first. Modern wood glues are amazing, but the physical support of the swollen tenon across the narrow stripes, and wider ones too, has to provide more strength in my opinion. Not suggesting anyone needs to do it, but it like to.

Also an exaggeration, I know, but did you use any dominoes in your boards? I did on mine and I think it worked well. For the thin strips, I clamped them to a larger piece and cut the mortise through them. I used glue on each layer and longer dominoes to pass through sometimes multiple layers. You have to be careful on placement because the chamfer or cove could possibly cut through the ends of the dominoes if too close to the edge. Just a thought for future reference.

I thought the joke was that the owner of the cutting board will be dead from the poison woods long before the colors fade...

RIP RR. We will definitely make a pilgrimage to the Pompidou.

He looked so young and innocent there.

Is it possible that nobody made any Mattnog in 2021? Seems like a tragedy. The Mason jar sidecar shown above in my 2020 nog pics was consumed last night with some freshly whipped cream and it was delicious. Reposted here for the sake of the historical record. We'll need to do better in 2022... In looking for pics of ironbut Steve, I happened upon this one of Matt and me in SF. By very random coincidence, I'm wearing the same t-shirt today. 😏

Fecking hawt! Such a bunch of lucky retirees who worked with you, Nate. Between you and Naaman, lots of people who served this country are heading to retirement very happy.

Also fucking cool! Being made from USS Constitution parts is pretty fucking special, as is a combined 86 years of service. Nice work! And I didn't mean to be remiss in saying how amazing the M&O sign is because it is amazing indeed.

The extra dust extraction port will be for vacuuming and for smaller tools like the sanding station that will sit on top of the cabinet as needed.

Steve and I got the miter station cabinets mostly built today. Essentially the entire back wall will be work space and storage in addition to the miter station. We still have to add a ¾ plywood top, two shelves on the right hand side for wood storage, and I am still deciding about the cabinet space to the left side of the saw. And the Kapex is actually on a temporary shelf because I didn't have enough ¾ ply and we wanted a photo op. When complete, we are going to do a face frame and drawer fronts in maple, I think. We have decided that the only miter fence needed is the Kapex fence, which maximizes the work surfaces on either side of the saw. I have ordered a Woodpeckers Stealth track system that will be inset flush into the top on both sides of the saw with flip up stops and track to mount clamps and such. It should make for happy chop sawing.

Truth be told we pieced off about half of each plate for Alden to have a full meal of leftovers. The chile bourbon syrup kicks chicken and waffles onto another level. So frickin tasty

Looks great Ian! Enjoy your new space. I got a peak at the other side of your "cutting block" today and it is awesome!
