  1. Actually, I never bought a money clip knife, thanks for the reminder.
  2. If you don't want me shooting an attacker then I thought you might be happier if I had to resort to my fencing skills that I learned in college.
  3. On another note Akathisia, be VERY careful about getting a pirate or fake ATH-ESW9 if you go for one, as they are definitely out there.
  4. Not everyone would agree with that: dpreview forums 1 dpreview forums 2 Someone else online likened the difference as being "the Leica photos were warmer like Kodak film and the Panasonic was cooler like with Fuji film". I don't know if that is true or not, but I can see the difference in the photos posted online in the second link. This and the included Adobe Light Room 3 software pushed me towards the Leica, and I'm very happy with it.
  5. I also thought the demo at CanJam 2009 was amazing. I'd like to have one of these someday.
  6. Cold Steel Sword Cane from wife for my birthday. Looks like this:
  7. Sounds like you have a good home rig but nothing to take with you yet, I also agree that an ATH-ESW10 would be a good choice for portable phones that doesnt leak sound but doesn't block too much sound either. You'd have to find a used one since they sold out, but the sound is worth it. You can use the iPhone to drive them, or a small inexpensive amp like the iBasso T3 if the Pico Slim suggested earlier is too expensive. Other decent closed phones that wont isolate too much that you can consider are the Shure SRH-840, Denon D2000, ATH-A900, and the Sennheiser HD25-1 which do isolate more than the others but would not block hearing alarms and mortars. I have not heard the ATH-ESW9 so I didn't recommend them because I don't know how good they are. If you like Stax and can deal with something that rests on the ear canal opening but doesn't need to actually enter the ear canal, you might want to consider looking for a Stax SR-001 Mk2 portable, or better yet an SR-003 with a small SRM-252 amp which would sound even better (more extended bass and treble). Something like this: Stax SRS-005 If you use the headband that comes with it you can place the eartips at the canal opening but not push the inside, and the headband will hold them there securely. That would be transportable too. Paired with a Pico DAC or iPhone line out dock you should be pretty happy.
  8. Cool. I'll watch for this. Thanks!
  9. My daughters on an empty Myrtle Beach Fountain near Hard Rock Cafe
  10. Tyll, that's hilarious. I got good news today - Apple called to say my son's 2006 Macbook Pro is fixed, and while the estimate was for $185 it's gonna cost only $87 in real dollars. Pretty happy about that. No more need for external keyboard if we want to type an A, D, X, C, or V.
  11. That's good you caught it early - sometimes you don't know they have an ear infection until their ears are draining.
  12. So far the combination of Avelox and Zyvox are starting to knock out the infection. The plan is to drop by Duke if it starts to worsen again before we return. We got to spend some time at Myrtle Beach and the pool today and got plenty of rest, with two more days of rest before we return to Duke for a day. I think this trip is starting to turn around for the better.
  13. Been coughing up loads of blood since Friday. Decided to not cancel the trip to duke university and Myrtle Beach. Lived through the plane ride thanks to a portable oxygen concentrator. The worst part was hiding the problem as we were taking off and having to cough and swallow about 4-5 OZ of blood so I wouldnt spew all over everyone. Life sucks sometimes. At least myrtle beach is pretty, daughter loves Duke.
  14. Happy birthday!
  15. Comcast felt a bit faster tonight. I suppose during the day we're sharing bandwidth and it sometimes slows down to half of this. This is still 10x faster than we ever got with Qwest DSL.
  16. Happy birthday
  17. Took our old 2006 15" Macbook Pro to the Apple Store with a flakey keyboard. I couldn't fix it by doing a PRAM reset using a USB keyboard, or by booting from the installer disk. Apple thinks we're looking at $185 to fix it, since the Apple Care ran out a year and 83 days ago. It's fine as long as we don't need to use the A, D, X, C, V, and left CMD keys. One option was to just make the kids keep using it with an external keyboard plugged in, or using the onscreen software keyboard, but I was out voted.
  18. I love the "H2O too" one.
  19. What I like about the lens cap on my Leica D-Lux 5 is that I can grab the cap in my left hand, and wrap the tethering cord around my fingers in order to get a more steady hold on the camera. I also like that it will protect the lens better if I drop the camera. I once dented a lens on my Mamiya 35mm when it fell a short distance onto a table, but landed on the outer edge of the lens awkwardly.
  20. I have a Rolex that was handed down to me when my grandfather passed away (which fortunately didn't spend any time hidden in anyone's anus). I keep it locked up in a safe to pass on to my son someday I believe it's the same as this model I'm pretty happy just sticking with my 6th gen Nano as a watch, or wearing my Casio or Invicta if I need waterproof. I worry too much about an expensive watch getting damaged or lost, or people trying to take advantage of me because I have a nice watch and they think I'm made of money.
  21. Ari, I like the 3rd one the most.
  22. I like that article. I have an Ernst Haas photo on my wall, with a light beam coming through the clouds and hitting the ocean with a gull flying over it, so the following quote caught my eye, "Leica, schmeica. The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE." I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the photos that member here have taken and posted in the photography thread. Some of them are amazing, and almost every one of them is really good. I'm often forgetting to look at my surroundings with a "seeing" eye where I think to catch a photo of something cool, or I'm looking for something cool to shoot but can't find it. When I find it I grab the first thing I can reach to take the shot with. If it's an iPhone then so be it.
  23. I dunno about that, but it was a school art show and it looked pretty good as an 8x10 print. I think the lighting and the framing was nice the way it caught the sunbeam, and among all the photos submitted in the district his was pretty good. I recall my first 2Mp Minolta digital camera ages ago was good enough for an 8x10, and it didn't seem to give me photos much better than a 3Mp iPhone. Thanks all other for the birthday wishes.
  24. Socks turned 1 year old today.
  25. Thanks. I edited my last post with a copy of my son's winning photo. I think his came out better than mine, as he didn't get too much foreground in the shot and he caught a ray of sunlight coming in through the clouds. Some people might complain he caught too much sky instead. We're proud of both of them. My younger daughter won an award last year in art too. I'm gonna try to take a photo of the sculpture and of the other one's computer art and post it sometime.
