We had a 5.3 earthquake last night in Trinidad CO about 11:46PM (still many miles away), but I and about 50 others just west of the Broadmoor golf course felt it. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/us/c0005idz/us/index.html

Hopefully BN comes through, as my son wants one for Xmas and the HP site kept crashing when trying to check out.

The cat is definitely happy, and eating well. I'm hoping he gets a passing grade by the vet tomorrow, other than looking like he came out of Auschwitz.

I use the normal theme most of the time, but for reading in bed with my iPad I like the "infinite dark" theme. Thanks!

Holy Crap! The New Stax Omega Looks fierce! (Stax SR-009)

Tyll, would you be testing any headphones at RMAF, where I could loan you a few to measure with my KGSS? (O2 Mk1, HE-60, SR-Lambda, Lambda Nova Signature) -

Drove 2 hours through rush hour up to Denver to bring my daughter's their tickets for the Atmosphere concert tonight at Red Rocks, which left back at home after being reminded 5x yesterday and today to not forget. Then we to my father-in-law's house to check on his cat that escaped on 7/31 when he passed away, and that wasn't re-captured until Wednesday 8/17. While the family couldn't catch the cat during that time, food that was left out for it was being eaten by something. The cat is frighteningly thin, and I'm very worried about it, but it's been eating great since my nephew recovered him. We have an appointment set up with the vet for Monday morning, and I hope nothing is seriously wrong except for some malnutrition. It seems happy now, and not so scared anymore that it's affectionate and purrs when being pet and cuddled. Brent, glad you came out of surgery okay. Get well soon!

KGSSHV, Balanced Dynahi Rev A and DynaFET board run
HeadphoneAddict replied to Lil Knight's topic in Do It Yourself
If there any left after everyone get's theirs I would be interested in a set so I could hire a builder to help me with the amp. If it's only for actual DIY'ers I understand, but I like my KGSS and think the HV would be a nice step up. -
I sort of want a pair of good closed phones

Well, I already know the modded A900 Art sound like plaidplatypus's stock A900 LTD, so you could try to find a stock pair of the LTD if you like the demo of the modded pair. The Shure 840 are a safe bet too. I haven't heard the 940, but I see that they cost a whole lot more than the 840. I still think my modded A900 Art are better than a stock HFI780, and slightly behind my old APS V2 cabled D2000. The Ety will isolate a lot more than the A900 will, if that's most important. I have a de-podded IM716 (ety drivers) that I like more than my old ER6i, but it absolutely must be amped to do a decent job. A guy on head-fi made a custom pod for it with 22, 33 and 47 ohm resistors and I can set any combination to get more bass with less resistance and more detail and air with more resistance. I could send you the IM716 and if you like them you can keep them, as long as you don't sell them but pay it forward if you get tired of them. -

Good suggestion - from memory of the SRH840 that I heard last summer and the summer before, I seem to recall the Shure had better mids than my A900, and the bass was a little tighter without the mid-bass hump of the A900. I don't recall much about the level of detail or the soundstage with the Shure, but do I recall telling Todd back at CanJam 2009 that I thought I liked them better than a stock D2000. I had forgotten all about them since. I should have been thinking about alternate suggestions rather than simply answering the question about the A900's sound. I did offer to let him borrow mine, so we'll see if he takes me up on it. I'm not looking to sell mine though, unless it was to get the Shure for myself, and even then I'd still want to compare them. Comfort is definitely a plus with the A900, but I still use my modded D7000 a lot more even though they are a bit heavier. @Grawk - I had a pair of ATH-W10R a while back, but I thought the mids were a bit honky or nasal sounding. I got them as partial trade + cash for my HP-1000 which I should have kept, and so I sold them soon after. Are the VTG that much better? -
Need your help choosing my headphones (very specifics needs)
HeadphoneAddict replied to headcasemarc's topic in Headphones
My understanding is Kleer is a lossless high quality RF system, and Sennheiser has a portable setup with earbuds (not in ear, no mic) and so does Sleek Audio with their in ear monitors. Much better sounding than Blue tooth from what I've read. However, for bluetooth I like the Motorola S705 pendant, which has a mic and I can plug in any headphone, full size or in ear. I transmit to it from the laptop or iPhone. I also have a Motorola DC800 BT transmitter hooked up to my home stereo and TV to transmit to it when watching TV in the bedroom while my wife sleeps. Sound quality is decent, and certainly not sucky. -
Get better man!

What would you like me to compare them to? Or is the description of the sound good enough? Would you like to borrow them? I think anyone could add a little felt inside and stick on a SPC cable though. [EDIT - I see what you did but am still confused, sorry. I haven't had enough to drink tonight.] -

I have a pair of ATH-A900 Art which have been (1) internally dampened (using felt I think), and (2) re-cabled with a 3 foot silver plated copper cable. I traded my Belden wire re-cabled Ultrasone Proline 2500 for these plus a custom IEM headphone cable, and I really feel that these are a better headphone. I really like them with a portable amp, but an occasional 5V amp still seem underpowered with them if playing very loud. Your Pico DAC/amp should be fine. Actually my iPhone 4 does a pretty decent job powering these. I don't need to turn it up past about 75-80% get moderate to loud listening volumes, and I'm listening right now at a more comfortable 65% and perfectly happy listening 4 feet away from a window air conditioner. They sound fairly well balanced, and not terribly different from my old Denon D2000 with an APS V2 cable (which had better bass control and smoother highs than a stock D2000). As a plus, the mids on these were actually a little more present than on the D2000, but the micro-detail was slightly less during comparisons. These also sounded almost the same as plaidplatypus's stock pair of ATH-A900 LTD. I've never heard a stock "Art" to know if these are actually better than stock or not, but he agreed Art were about as good as the LTD. The bass is strong but not over-bearing, although there is still a bit of a mid-bass hump. The mids are only slightly withdrawn in relation to the bass but they don't feel recessed or sucked out, and the highs have nice presence and shimmer without being sibilant or bright. However, sometimes I want to EQ the treble up about 3dB louder, although I wouldn't call them dark. It could be my 49 year old ears. I do think they scale up with better gear. The closed design helps mask my portable air conditioner a bit, but it's nothing like the isolation on my son's HD25-1 II. The sound quality however is a step up from the HD25-1 II. Isolation is more like the HD-202 and much better than my ATH-ESW10 JPN. They do not leak too much sound to the outside when listening to loud music. As a bonus, the mods were done by -=someone=- you know. -
The iMac refused to let my wife log in this morning so I rebooted it while I was still logged in, only to have it refuse to start from the hard drive at all. It was working okay for me before the reboot. I booted from my ancient Snow Leopard 10.6.0 installer DVD and ran disk utilities and the drive was fine. But when i tried to repair permissions it was a mess, and couldn't do it. I spent hours trying to get the internal drive bootable. I ended up wiping the hard drive, only to find the problem was on my recent clone of the internal drive too. So i had to re-install OSX 10.6 from DVD and migrating all the data from my most recent data from a time machine backup from 8/4, and then upgrading to the most recent 10.6.8 and other stuff. Only just now finished. Geez!

On the first day of our honeymoon in 1992 my wife and I took the Amtrak on the Oregon trail route to Seattle, with plans to rent a car there and drive through the Canadian Rockies to backpack and camp at various places; but in Oregon the train hit a 17 year old riding his bike on the tracks over a bridge. He tried to outrun the train rather than jump off the bridge. When the train 1st stopped we asked what was wrong, and when we found out I volunteered that I was a doctor and would like to help. The kid had been knocked clean out of his shoes, and was in the ditch with blood coming out of every orifice. Nevertheless, my wife and I did CPR until the EMT's arrived and took over. His friends were there and had escaped off the bridge before the train, and they were all freaked out. The conductor/engineer was too shaken up to complete the trip and we had to wait 4 hours for a replacement. We finally arrived in Seattle about 6 hours later and found that the child had lived another 4 hours before his parents had to pull the life support. We convinced ourselves that we did everything that we could, and that we bought him a few hours for his family and friends to say goodbye, and did our best to enjoy the rest of the 10 day honeymoon. We didn't give a second thought to the engineer though. We assumed sending in a replacement was standard procedure for this kind of thing. [EDIT - today is our 19th wedding anniversary!]

You can de-authorize any computer one at a time as often as you want, in order to play DRM iTunes music/Video on different computers over the limit of 5. But when you don't have access to the computer anymore, i.e. broken or stolen, if you are already at your 5 computer limit then the only option is to "de-authorize all" to get that one computer off the authorized list so you can make room for the new one. Apple cannot de-authorize only one computer for you, even they are also stuck with the "all or nothing" choice. I've had a logic board swapped in my old G5 iMac a few years ago and Apple did the reset for me so I didn't have to use up my one chance on that. But when a RAM slot went bad on the Core2Duo iMac I was able to deauthorize it before I had them replace the logic board. I suppose if one sells their computer they can still contact the buyer and ask them to load iTune and choose store > deauthorize the computer for you. Now, iCloud has a once every 90 day limit for changing devices, from what I've read, but I'm not sure why. -
Bumping an old thread like this is not a good way to make friends here. I'd hate to see you get decimated, but it's inevitable that the shovel will come out.
