  1. My father-in-law's estate is sending my wife's whole family (19 of us) to Cancun for one big fling before the Nana of the family is too old to travel or isn't with us anymore. She's at 77 years, but so was father-in-law when he passed away this summer, so her family wanted to build some new memories while she's still with us. Is there anything to do or place to go in Cancun that we absolutely should not miss? Any dangers or places to avoid? We'll be at some all inclusive beach resort that I can't even pronounce, but I think there is a water park near by. I've only been to Mexico once, and the Tijuana taxi driver's scared the crap out of me - is it like that in Cancun? Thanks!
  2. So, Brian Kurtz is leaving Cavalli Audio on friendly terms I hear. I was dumbfounded when I met him at RMAF and he looked at me and said, "Larry Ganz, Camp Jacobs, Uitca Mississippi, 1975". I'm like "huh, what"? Turns out he was my camp councilor at a 4-week summer camp when I was 14 years old, and he remembered me!! Amazing guy, whom I plan to stay in touch with.
  3. Interesting. I Found my SED winged-C EL-34 so I'll install those tonight for a listen. My WES is not terrible as is, but wonder if there's something about this being unit #1 with RCA loop out onstead of SE input with phase splitters that makes it a little better. I bought the unit Steve Guttenberg reviewed, and he thought it was the best he ever heard with O2 mk2.
  4. For those that missed this, it's $248 at Wallmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pioneer-VSX-921-K-A-V-Receiver/17655301?ci_sku=17655301&ci_src=14110944&sourceid=1500000000000003142050
  5. Can you elaborate? I haven't read anything negative recently about the newer WES (but I haven't been following recent threads as much either).
  6. I haven't tried Aperture yet, so I can't advise there. I stuck with the previous version of iPhoto under the "if it aint broken don't fix it" maxim. So far it hasn't screwed me over yet with over 20K+ photos and about 50Gb library size.
  7. If you are on a Mac, can you option click on iPhoto in your dock and tell it to create a new library without it crashing? i.e. is the crash only with opening the current library? At that point, can you drag the old library into the new iPhoto library window and have it import everything?
  8. Point taken. I find my SS eXStatA is only a little better than the HEV70 with my Pro bias phones, while my Hybrid was a bit better, but neither one is as good as the WES or KHSS. I pretty much only use it with my SR-Lambda and SR-5NB now, which sound very nice out of it but I could have had a used Stax amp for a lot less. Aside from that, my hybrid amp had died once in March 2010, then had all the boards replaced with ones Bill stuffed, then the PSU died over the summer, so I had NoNoNoNoNoNo build another PSU and then the right channel died again. I recently bought a new set of stuffed hybrid amp boards (and entire PCB/BOM for a SS amp) but I'm afraid to install the new boards until I have done the PSU setup procedure on the PSU that NoNoNoNoNoNo built, to be sure it doesn't kill the amp again. Not very good luck with that one at all, although the SS amp has been running fine for over a year. But, it's reliability and not sound that would be my main concern about being an early adopter of the LL, as I thought the the LL sounded very good. But so did the WES Mk2 and BHSE. I'm going to dig out those Winged-C EL34 I bought from Deepak (at least I think I bought a quad from him) and try those in place of the Shugang 50 year treasure 6CA7. I'm also seriously contemplating the partial upgrade to WES Mk2 that Jack offered to me at a relatively low price. Something about improved inductors that give it better extension and transparency. Regardless, my WES was better than my old GES in direct comparisons, and I'd be happy to keep it now that I have the 009.
  9. Wow, the extra free RAM sounds pretty sweet. I hadn't heard of that happening before. I was going to buy my wife a refurbished 2.5ghz 4Gb/500Gb iMac for $180 off, but Macrumors says they're near the end of a product cycle and recommend waiting to see whether there are any major changes in the next 60 days when it's due for an update. But even without an update it's bound to be a bit faster than our late-2006 2Ghz core 2 duo iMac that's maxed out at 3Gb RAM. My wife wants moar speed now, but she'll wait if she has to. But what likely bogs our iMac down is that we run multiple background apps/servers under my account (iTunes home sharing, Stream to Me, Twonky Server, and more), and then my wife logs in a second user so as to not interfere with the background apps. If I move those tasks to another computer the iMac would be speedier, but by getting a newer iMac or Macbook we could also keep the old iMac for those background server tasks.

  11. Well, to be honest the only music I tried with the BHSE and SR-009 at RMSF was Justin's copy of Dark Side of the Moon. But with that it simply sounded too bright for my tastes with the SR-009, and not full enough in the mids with the SR-007. I suppose tube rolling or a change in source and program material could fix a lot of that. Again, if I was perfectly happy with the way my O2 Mk 1 are being driven, I wouldn't consider changing amps at all. But i'm happy with my amps with the SR-009 and HE-60. I'll stop complaint now. Sorry.
  12. I didn't see a review thread about the LL over there. I'll have to go look for it, but it's not often that I add a new thread to follow, since I usually just read the olds threads that I subscribed to a while back. I for one thought the LL sounded very good at RMAF with O2 Mk1, HE-60 and SR-009, and it sounded nothing like my SS eXStatA rev1. While I thought the BHSE was great with O2 mk1 but a little bright with 009, the WES had good tone with the 009 but it didn't pair as well with the O2 Mk1. Somehow they both sounded good with the LL. I'm still straddling the fence about whether I still want to replace my WES with the LL or BHSE, or just do the WES Mk2 upgrade with Jack Wu and keep it. If all I want to listen to is the 009, then my WES and KGSS seem to perform similarly well. When it comes to driving the O2 the KGSS is, I admit, slightly better and certainly more powerful.
  13. The 2 lbs a week is actually what the doctor suggested once the initial 3 week cleanse was over. I kinda over did things a little.
  14. Happy Birthday!

  16. Thanks for the heads up, and congrats on your loss as well. I started with the SP Cleanse diet for 3 weeks and was down about 20 lbs at the end of that. I guess it's earned the "cleanse" name for more than just detoxifying, based on my losses in the first week or two. My stamina on the exercise bike has improved a bit since I started doing this. That's about the only cardio I can tolerate with my lung disease and fibromyalgia. I'm under the supervision of a weight loss doctor as well, and for the past 5 weeks my losses are between 3 - 4.5 lbs a week. At almost 50 years old I already had some slack skin, but it's not too bad. I'd be happy if I can continue to lose 2 lb a week for the next 4 months. Is that too fast? Since the cleanse diet ended I've had 3 more weeks of a low carb diet with lots of vegetables and protein, plus the required amounts of fat and vitamins, and minimal amounts of egg or dairy. So, I'm not starving although I haven't had any bread products in 6 weeks, and am down to 227 after the second 3 week period. I'm allowed whatever carbs are in my "all the veggies I can eat diet", but I can only have 2 servings of fruit a day, and only 1/2 cup of brown or wild rice a day (or 1/2 - 1 cup of lentils). I'm allowed 2-4 3oz servings of meat a day, and I'm limiting that to fish and chicken, but no red meat. To help with hunger pains, I either eat raw cauliflower and carrots, or drink orange spice herbal tea which I've found helps to suppress my appetite. All of this has kept me in mild ketosis and in fat burning mode. A bonus is that I refused to give away my old skinny clothes as my wife asked in the past, so when I hit my target weight I'll have plenty to wear. I just wish I hadn't given my "George Carlin Says Go Fuck Yourself" T-shirt to a friend when I got too fat to wear it (my wife hated it). My weight log. ** digital home scale hits max at 250 (all home wt done unclothed (ewww...) Day 1 - 260 lbs at Dr. office May 2012 clothed, but I'd gained weight since May. Day 6 - 246 lbs Day 14 - 241.8 lbs Day 21 - 239 lbs (end of SP Cleanse) Day 27 - 234.5 lbs Day 37 - 229.8 lbs Day 44 - 227 lbs today (229 clothed on home scale no shoes, but 228 clothed no shoes at doctor)
  17. happy birthday!

  19. Congrats Chris! In other news, I saw my doctor today and was told I've lost 32lbs since I saw him at the end of May (260 > 228). I told him I actually lost it over just the past 6 weeks, and that I could barely fit into the clothes I was wearing back in May which forced me to start dieting. Feeling pretty good about this, but need to drop another 28 lbs.
  20. I'm partial to a suppressed .22LR
  21. Congrats to daddy monkey!

  23. I love the color in that redwood tree photo. And I still have your rocky mountain national park photo with snow capped mountains and turning of the aspen as my desktop (at least that's where I think it was taken).
  24. I made this suggestion to manaox2 in a PM, to help try to keep the gift a surprise, and not have to come right out and say what you want (like buying it yourself through the other person). "We could consider exchanging something consumable, something that we like and that we want to see if the other might like it too - i.e. food, alcohol, tea, coffee, etc. Almost like a "kid going away to camp care-package" with their favorite things in it. This way if the other one of us already has that item then it will be sure to be enjoyed at some point down the road." This would not rule out fruitcake, although tylenol with codeine might cause too much of a stir.
  25. Thanks! I just meant that IF there are any rules what would they be, but your common sense rules sound fine. It's nice to be surprised, so I was hoping to look at his posts and gear and guess what he might like. So far I think the 2-3Tb hard drive is maybe a little too much.
