  1. I'm very happy with my 16/768 retina MBP, but my wife's 21.5" new iMac with 16GB + Fusion Drive is pretty darn speedy too. The MBA 13" screen was a little difficult for me to read, but they do seem pretty zippy if you've got good eyes.
  2. Happy Birthday!
  3. It's not that I don't get it, but I choose not to respond further because I'm not very good at picking the right words to convey my feelings. I already tried once to explain the course of emotions that I went through prior to posting, and how the timing of when I posted lead me to post what I did, but if you can't understand that then there's really no point in my continuing. I have a dozen things I'd like to say right now, but I can't find a way to say it without the fear of having it dissected and being passed through the grinder on the path to certain misinterpretation. I'm just a spectator here now.
  4. Don't think that I didn't shed a tear over this. All it took was one mental image of the carnage with my kids faces superimposed on it, and I broke down. After I came to grips with the tragedy and loss I got pissed, and posted. If I had posted sooner what i was feeling Then I'd probably have been called a baby or a whiner. I don't care what you call me, but "appalled and concerned parent" is more appropriate.
  5. We can't rid society of all guns - they're too pervasive. There will always be a blackmarket supply for criminals if law abiding people are banned from ownership. So what is the solution to making people safer with the reality that we can't get rid of them?
  6. This whole Connecticut shooting today really has my hackles up. I can't help but think that if the victims, or in this case the teachers, were armed that there would be fewer casualties when a person snaps and goes on a rampage somewhere. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/14/police-respond-to-shooting-at-connecticut-elementary-school/ What in the world would drive someone to shoot and kill 20 innocent elementary school children !?!??!?!
  7. But, two 6's make a 12 !!
  8. Santa wins this round.
  9. The day that they announced the new 7th Gen Nano's I immediately ordered the old 6th Gen with clip as a spare, since I often use mine as a watch in a metal band. You may still want to snag an 8GB before even those are gone.
  10. What a relief, I just checked and both of our Kona bikes have the Shimano hydraulic brakes and rotors.
  11. But, are they Dusty approved?
  12. Keep this up and you'll be able to cash in when you retire and keep going for a few months on the proceeds...
  13. Okay, I'm buying a Wolf Designs Module 2.5 with cover. I've filled out the return form to send this one back to Amazon. Thanks.
  14. I was looking at the Wolf winders for $150-200 for a single ($350 for a double), which is pretty steep as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't aware that the cheaper models could magnetize the watch. The $69 Accuratic I have now uses a Japanese Mabuchi motor, which is supposed to be good or something?
  15. I forgot to mention, I also sent him this Zulu 4-ring watch band - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046X06TM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 I'm waiting till after Xmas to buy myself a watch, but this one I've been eyeing for 8 weeks and the price hasn't changed, while a few others went down 10% 2 weeks ago and then went back up last week.
  16. Can someone please recommend a decent watch winder that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and doesn't become too noisy over time after initially running silent? I'd prefer one that can do two watches. I returned a $49 Versa two watch winder to Amazon that was silent at first but became noisy after 7-10 days. I replaced it with an $69 Accuratic expandable watch winder which was also silent when operating at first. Tonight it too started making noises while turning the watch, after just one week operating silently at 900 TPD (setting 2 out of 5, as setting 1 was letting the watch run slow). If this had worked well I was going to expand it to wind 2 or more watches. Am I just having bad luck, getting 2 lemons of models that have higher than avg ratings on Amazon than several others, or are they all pretty much crap? PS: When I was here looking for recommendations for a watch for my brother's birthday last Friday, I ended up buying him this Citizen (no winder needed).
  17. Congrats to your daughter Al !!
  18. I'm so proud of this guy - I'm class of 84 Texas A&M University. I was there when Gary Kubiak was the TAMU star quarterback, and he was really good. Took us to the bowl games many times. http://youtu.be/Mp8iZAySN2M Texas Aggie joke to follow:
  19. Boo, as you know, some people don't want to deal with learning something new as they get older. So, if your mom is coming from a PC, she may not like the transition and new learning curve for Mac OS. But, if you are installing MS Office and she can use that, then it sounds like she is more savvy than my mom-in-law. What will she use it for? We gave my wife's mom a Mac a few years back, and she couldn't remember how to use it. She was only going to use it as a digital answering machine and to surf the web or do email with AOL dialup. We taught her those two things, plus how to print, and it sat un-used forever. Then we got a mail-staion just for email, nope. Then we got her an MSN TV, didn't touch it. We gave up for several years. Last year we gave her a 1st gen cellular iPad, and that one she uses. She reads books on our nook account, checks sports scores, gets email with family photos attached, uses it as a digital picture frame, and surfs the web if needed. Every 1-2 months I update the apps for her on my wi-fi (to save the 3G data). At that time I may add new books for her to read in the "nook kids" app (using parental controls so she doesn't open books that we aren't done with and accidentally move our bookmarks.) BTW, I picked up a Samsung portable external DVD write on Amazon for $25, but you can add apps via App store pretty easily.
  20. They should allow you to extend the deadline due to the "work related injury". It's not your fault you're laid up with a bad leg.
  21. The iPhone 5 is pretty speedy vs the 4, but so was the 4S. One handed typing isn't a problem. As for battery life, I will typically have mine off the charger for an average of 16 hours, and use it for 4-5 hours during that time, and have about 20% of battery left by 1-2AM. Yesterday I had 17.5 hours of standby and 4 hours usage, with 4% left. There have been other days with 15 hours of standby and only 3 hours of use, with over 50% remaining after midnight. Apple maps couldn't find my mother-in-law's house 2 months ago (or a month ago), but it got me to the veterinary surgeon this morning without a problem. Overall, I'd prefer to use Navigon map app for voice directions and have the original google back on the phone for a bird's eye view, but at least google works in the browser. And a few other apps can give voice directions too (I think Bing is one). I haven't tried any alternate text entry apps, but on iPhone they still require entering the text in a separate app and pasting it into where you want it to go i.e. http://www.tuaw.com/2012/08/20/fleksy-is-an-alternate-text-input-tool-for-the-visually-impaired/ and http://www.zdnet.com/blog/cell-phones/iphone-app-review-messagease-text-entry-method/2118 or http://blogs.sybase.com/wdudley/?p=692 As for memory - Apps are getting bigger and bigger due to the retina displays and dual binary apps covering all screen sizes, so 16Gb is really pushing it. I could happy with 32GB, even though I splurged for 64GB. But 16GB is really tight unless you don't mind deleting apps, music and videos to make room on the fly for downloading new stuff and taking videos. You could probably squeeze in 10-20 albums, 50 apps, 500 photos, and a couple of iTunes movies on a 16GB, if you use 256K audio and you don't download large maps to use when you have no cell service. But the camera's 1080p videos take up a lot of space, so you might want to leave 4GB of free space on your phone. You also need to leave a lot of free space if you are updating a large app OTA. You only have about 14GB of storage space for your data, after the iPhone uses some of the 16GB for the iOS partition.
  22. What happens when he doesn't pass the message along to Sgt Williams?
  23. Happy belated!
  24. Does this look like a good budget Panasonic 55" 3D plasma for $1200? http://gizmodo.com/5964094/panasonic-st50-plasma-television-review-good-picture-great-value
  25. Happy Birthday!
