  1. I should be glad that the maxed WA6 is my only Woo amp? I've just hit my 6 year anniversary with it.
  2. Thanks for all the advice. I'm going for the buydig deal with both lenses and the 5-year warranty. It's going to be better than anything she's had before, and she doesn't mind working on images in post processing. So she can fix some things up on the RAW images in Light Room without a lot of trouble. Later I think later she'll want to try to find the WiFi module to grab a few jpgs to upload to social media, or grab a GPS module as well, but that's not most important. I think the next step is that we'll look for one really good lens to go with it, to cover the bases that the two "kit lenses" don't cover - with clarity being number one and low light being important but after clarity. That could be her Christmas present if you guys could recommend one lens that can do a lot with a little less light and a bit more detail, but without being the uber crazy lens you'd buy yourself with an unlimited budget. It doesn't have to zoom, because if it's clarity is enough to take advantage of the 24mp then she can just crop the photo and still have good detail (effectively like a 4x digital zoom to get a 6mp image). I've been a subscriber to the dpreview newsletter for over 3 years, and I just read their article on the D3200 (all 22 pages) and I'd love to have this camera myself. Yeah, there are some things I'd like to be a little better, but I paid $600 for my Leica D-LUX5 with LR 3 and 3-yr warranty, and this is $100 less for what seems to be more camera. Yes, HDR or panoramic would be nice like some competitors, but at least it's got some HD video capability that several others don't have. It's always nice to be able to take a video in a pinch, without having to switch cameras.
  3. So, I read the reviews linked from the coupon web page, and then I bought one of the last 5 of these D3200 deals in stock with the 5 year warranty. The $20 discount code worked fine. Thanks. If she doesn't want it I do, and I still have 45 days to return it if I don't. I almost decided to do a square trade warranty instead, for the damage protection, but it's more than twice as much money ($44 vs $105) and for only 3 years. I had a 3 year warranty on my Leica that expired last month and I never used it, so i figure the cheaper the better. In this case I felt compelled to buy the warranty because the included 90-day refurb warranty would run out before she ever received the Camera. I also don't think she will use the included Adobe light room 5. But she definitely wants me to upgrade her old photoshop elements 10 to the latest version. I'll wait till closer to her birthday in case they come out with a new version. LR 4.0 came out right after I got LR 3. I can use the LR 5 to upgrade my LR 3.6 instead.
  4. That does look like a good deal, but it's too early since I won't need it for another 4 months, and the refurb only has a 90-day warranty. Is it safe to assume that I can buy their Mack 5-yr extended warranty at the same time as the camera so that it will be protected? http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=MKDIGCAMGR1000&tab=descript If So, I could jump on it tonight. [EDIT - I read the fine print, and if the warranty is bought at the same time it covers refurbished cameras that come with a 90-day]
  5. My older daughter has wished for a low cost digital DLSR camera for her birthday in a few months, giving us time to save up. I asked her to do all the research, and she sent me some links below. she's not interested in something like my point and shoot Leica D-LUX5, but wants the DSLR and interchangeable lenses, along with the bigger sensors they have. Part of her email below included links to discontinued used cameras on amazon that are similar to what she' spooking for, but I'd like to buy her a new budget-price camera with a warranty, if it's one worth owning: So, would something like a Canon EOS Rebel T3 (no lens) fit her requirements? To me the most important factor is an affordable price and reliability, because she can't be taking time away from school to futz with a buggy or defective camera. The reviews look good, and $299 without a lens doesn't seem impossible. I don't know about the version that comes with the 18-55 lens for $449, but that lens doesn't look like it would be great in low light. Our budget for Camera, Lens, and a Flash is about $500-600. With what we're spending on college I could buy 10 cameras a month, hence the low remaining budget. I know you guys like to buy the best, but on such a tight budget I'd love some recommendations if possible. I have loads of memory cards for her to use, so that's not an issue. I wanted to give her my D-LUX5 but I kinda like it for myself, and she wants to be able to put on telephoto lenses and take nature photos with her outdoor club, and then at other times use a decent low light non-zoom lens.
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. I really enjoyed the modded Mk2, which had a little more lively midrange than the Mk1 once modded (as opposed to in your face mids stock). They also seemed a little more efficient than my Mk1, with punchier bass as well. I sometimes wish I still had them, but with Marc's KGBH amp the Mk1 have pretty punchy bass - that almost competes with the LCD-2 rev2 bass now. Since I also owned the Mk1 at the time which had a deeper soundstage and a more laid back sound, I think I sold the Mk2 to pay off the new HD800. At the time I assumed that Stax would not change the sound again and that I could always buy a new pair in the future, and then they went and screwed them up worse with SZ3. I'd almost bet money that if Stax changes the SR-009 they'll end up worse not better. Certainly the SR-507 sounded so much more nasal and fatiguing than my old SR-404LE or current LNS.
  8. Man, I hate when that happens. I hope everything turns out okay.
  9. Framed a large picture to hang over the fireplace, but got tired/bored and decided to go see Noah - told my son we were going to go as a family, and he complains he has too much homework. I go check and he's playing minecraft. I told him I was going too block the IP address for mine craft, and then I used Mac screen sharing to go in and quit the game in the middle of what he was doing. 2 minutes later I see he is doing his science homework.
  10. Fought with Microsoft for an hour and a half because Office 2011 wouldn't activate on my oldest daughter's Macbook Pro after the Apple store replaced her crashed hard drive Friday afternoon. Fortunately she had the AppleCare extended warranty and a recent time machine backup, and any critical files between backups were on Dropbox or Google Drive and a thumb drive. The Apple store had it up and running for free by closing time. But after the Time Machine restore MS Office told her that it was activated on too many computers (3 license version for students, one for each kid). We tried the phone activation twice, feeding the automated activation line the 54 digit installation ID, and then having the voice on the other end thank us for contacting Microsoft and then disconnecting the call without further notice, and no confirmation ID needed to activate Office. The first Microsoft tech I spoke to (daughter was at work and couldn't call them) stated that Office 2011 treats any new hard drive as a new computer, and to activate Office 2011 on her new hard drive I'd have to pay $40 for another license. I told him that made no sense because in 2012 I backed up her old computer before I wiped it, and installed her clone onto her new Macbook Pro, and Office didn't complain about the changes. I told him I did the same thing with the other 2 kids computer upgrades in 2013 and 2014, with no issues. But now he's telling me that "the new hard drive counts as a 4th computer" and he would not budge to activate Office. WTF? The dipshit put me on hold for almost half an hour when I asked for his supervisor, knowing I'd eventually hang up so I couldn't complain and get him in trouble. I had to call Microsoft back, but the next tech was very nice and gave us a confirmation ID right away so we could activate Office again. Meanwhile my daughter spent the hour and a half freaking out over it, with an important paper due soon that she couldn't work on during her free time at work. Maybe I should have paid the $40 right away and saved her the misery of not knowing if we'd get Office fixed, but it was the principle of the thing that made me continue to fight for our current license to work.

  12. My wife helped me figure it out. - I bought the Kindle for my mom in Dec 2012. - Mom came to visit us in May 2013 and commented that she didn't have WiFi at home to buy books. - I thought that meant I mistakenly bought her the WiFi only model. - I traded mom my Kindle with keyboard for her Kindle touch, so that she would have 3G. - She had never tried to use the 3G, doh, and I simply forgot that I had bought her a 3G model 6 months earlier. - We've only used it sporadically since, until the other day when I noticed the 3G signal bars. When I recently bought my Paperwhite I didn't pay the $70 extra for 3G because I have a hotspot on my phone to give it internet. But it turns out to be fairly convenient with the 3G Kindle to not have to turn on the hotspot on the phone just to sync the Kindle's last page read or bookmarks.
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. Discovered today that my Kindle Touch is actually the 3G model. How could I not know this?
  15. You're well on your way to your goal.

  17. I haven't been to this thread for 24 hours, and got shit on while I was gone. Thanks.
