General Altimax Arctic winter tires for the G35x (my Michelin all seasons are quite sticky in the other 3 seasons). I have the same tires on the Subaru Impreza RS that my daughter drives, and they rock on ice and snow (her BFG Traction TA for summer are worse on snow than my Michelins). The Blizzaks I had on my previous STI were only slightly better.

I know you guys are aware that portable amps aren't only good for using on public transit and walking around, and that we use them in laptop rigs, bedside rigs, office rigs, transportable rigs, and more. In many of those cases it's nice to have something that can drive a full size phone when the desktop rig is not nearby.

Noise canceling headphones for portable DVD player
HeadphoneAddict replied to postjack's topic in Headphones
Some people call that "feeling negative pressure" when the "consistent" noise is missing. It leaves a hole in the environmental envelope. I tested my ANC7 and they only remove ambient droning environmental noise, but I still hear the TV and conversations around me. -
Yeah, I don't hear any noise at all, but my Amphora hisses a lot.

Noise canceling headphones for portable DVD player

I think the noise cancelation works better with droning constant noise like engine and road noise, or a window air conditioner. I seem to recall that it doesn't work as well with music and conversation entering the headphones from the outside, which can intrude more easily although they are reduced to a smaller degree. I think that an IEM with isolation would be better to block out the noisy gym music. I'll pull out my ANC7 tonight or tomorrow and give it a try with the TV turned up and see how much it helps. -
Aside from all the marketing terminology, the SR-71b at RMAF sounded great with the balanced LCD-2. Feel free to claim marketing BS if you see it, but I think it's the end result that is most important. A few other head-casers have heard the SR-71b prototype and I think they would agree that it's very good with the right headphones. The HD800 were still a little bright with it, but the LCD-2, HD600, ES5 and JH13Pro all sounded great with it. I wish I had tried the HE-5 LE and HE-6 with it, but there was too much to see at RMAF to spend more time on this. From my listening I don't think the power claims are unfounded, and I recall being told it will run 2-3 days on a charge at 8 hours a day which is not too bad for the sturdy power output. Some people will choose to use it as a desktop replacement and leave it plugged in most of the time to use with full size phones in their bedside or computer rig. Certainly if the iBasso amp is good sounding then people can choose that one instead for a lower price. In my case I have several adapters to use the Protector with IEM and full size phones, and I don't want to re-terminate them all to switch to iBasso - at least not before I get to hear one for myself. Since my son won a WEE at RMAF I happened to have a spare eXStatA amp that I was able to sell to help pay for this one. If I hear the iBasso and like it more, then I'll sell the SR-71b and use the proceeds to buy the iBasso and re-terminate all my cables at that point.

Noise canceling headphones for portable DVD player

Most of my IEM (universal or custom) are better than the ANC7, and they isolate outside noise much better. I would probably even enjoy a budget Brainwavz M2 or M3, or Nuforce NE-700X more, for half the cost. However, when I would fly with my family I could not hear when my wife or children were trying to get my attention if I had my IEM inserted, while the ANC7 don't isolate as much so I am more aware of my surroundings and if someone was trying to get my attention. I first bought them for our trip to Hawaii Dec 2008, and it was nice having them for that and other trips like Canjam LA 2009. The ANC7 do a good job of removing the drone of plane engines or road noise without totally isolating you from things around you that you might want to be aware of. I use them maybe 4-5x a year for when we go on trips and want to cut road noise. I haven't listened to them in several months, so I don't feel like it's a good idea to do more detailed impressions of the ANC7 right now. The Sennheiser HD25-1 II were a little better if I recall correctly, and they do isolate well but they don't cancel droning noise. So I gave the HD25-1 II to my son and kept the ANC7 for myself. If sound quality is more important those might be a better choice, or some IEM. Custom IEM seem to isolate much better on an airplane than universals in my experience, but universals have worked well for me in a car. I remember once flying with IM716 and an iPod Touch with no amp, and I could barely hear the music over the plane engines. -
And my son thanks you for that final act of sacrifice...

I have a pair of the ATH-ANC7 and they would be my recommendation for this situation as well. They're not an "audiophile" kind of phone, but they do a decent job and are more balanced than the Bose QC and QC2 I used to own. -
I believe the board was installed into the case by the previous owner, not by Mjolnir Audio. We shall see...

I read somewhere that component video cables were supposed to be 75 ohm for best performance. True or not?

Well, I promised Blesseingx we will buy his LNS when the ear pads he ordered come in, and I sold my son's pair of SR-Lambda to pay for it. My son Ben is infatuated with the WEE that he won at RMAF, and was willing to part with the SR-Lambda for a pro-bias pair. I'd always read that the LNS was better than the Lambda Sig. I'll PM blessingx a few questions about the LNS vs LS. My son liked my old Lambda Sig, but I thought it was a little bright or etched, so I thought we might try something else this time. Ben has my old HD600 and his own HF-2 that he also loves, so I'm guessing that he'll really like the LNS too. He did prefer the SR-Lambda to his dynamic phones, but enjoys them all. The WEE that my son won in the raffle at RMAF is the pre-rpoduction that meets the final specs but without some of the silk screening, and not the lesser performing prototype version. To get normal bias Jack Wu would have had to start fresh because the raffle unit was already built, and I thought it would have been rude to ask him to change the bias. Since this is the first pre-production unit, I may have to open it to see if the board has epoxy or not. I still have a spare set of luvdunhill teflon jacks, and maybe it's worth having them added and the bias modified...

I'm sitting here listening to my normal bias SR-Lambda right now, and I still can't believe how freaking good these are for a vintage phone. I don't think I could ever part with these, which I preferred to my Grado RS-1. I recently sold my son's SR-Lambda in order to buy him a LNS for his pro bias Woo WEE, and I'm thinking about a pro bias Lambda for myself which I need like a hole in the head. Won't have the LNS for a few weeks, but I'm looking forward to trying them out. I used to own the SR-404LE, which I thought were a little dark sounding for a Lambda model. The SR-404LE sounded kinda like a faster and more detailed/spacious version of the HD600, so not bad at all, but also not very energetic or exciting sounding. On the other hand, my old Lambda Signature had too much of that "etch" or hint of brightness to the sound. I've always felt the normal bias Lambda were just right, and they stood up well to the 404LE.

I listened to the PS-1000 at the Moon Audio table at RMAF 2010, and out of the Cary "300 SEI something" amp they sounded really good. I could live with a pair, even though they are colored in a fun way. I compared them to the LCD-2 and on the same Cary amp the PS-1000 sounded better, while the LCD-2 seemed a little duller and less dynamic from that amp. It turned out the PS-1000 and Cary amp is Drew's personal rig from home.

Re: cost of bulbs - My Sony XBR 42" RPTV bulb is going on 5 years and for a while 6 months ago it wouldn't start up on the first try, but for the past 4-5 months it's been okay and just slow to hit full brightness. My 4 year old 60" Panasonic RPTV Warns me it's time to change the bulb (has an hour timer), but it still works fine. A $100-140 bulb will get me several more years from these TVs. Back then these TVs were 4x the cost of this new one, so for the money you still get a lot of TV now (Especially if you need 60").
