Congratulations Kevin. Now plenty of time to enjoy those DSD albums of yours -
We'll see, I'm interested in knowing if this is a deliberate move from Focal, or the result of a slack quality control. Either way not a nice thing to be found on a 4000€ pair of headphones.

Thank you! it looks fantastic, I've just ordered one, it's going to come handy for the on-call shifts and vacation trips. The modded HD800 with a Pico Power or even the normal with DAC one make for an awesome portable rig.

Pre-emphasized files playback on Mac
Torpedo replied to Torpedo's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
An update in case someone is interested. Audacity would apply a preformed EQ curve to correct the pre-emphasis, it's described in the thread ironbut mentioned. Some of the things aren't the same in the current Audacity version, but creating the xml file with the curve and asking Audacity to use it is rather simple and similar. Audacity performs the equalization first over the file, then you can play it but it won't be altered if you don't save changes (I'm hoping). It's interesting looking at the spectral analysis plot, the change is rather noticeable after the de-emphasis is applied. Still open to try other alternatives. I've tried to do it on SoX using just the play and deemph commands, but it's not working, it always complains about the filename or some other shit. I really suck at Terminal console syntaxis, I have no idea why it's not working. I not even was able to get SoX converting the file into a de-emphasized one -
Well, not really...

Pre-emphasized files playback on Mac
Torpedo replied to Torpedo's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Yes, on Windows you have Foobar 2k which uses a plug-in. This plug-in is activated when Foobar detects the pre-emphasis flag on the TOC if playing a CD, or if the flag is present in the cue file (this is read by any proficient ripping software). What I'd like to know/use is some software on Mac doing the same. I have found over the years quite a few releases from the early to mid eighties that are pre-emphasized, many happen to be collectable japanese editions of classic jazz albums, even classical music. I don't own many, but they can be found from digital music sources already ripped. PM me were you interested. When getting one of this lossless pre-emphasized files you can do one of three: toasting a CD using the cue file, so the CD is an exact copy and would play on any player or transport/DAC with the pre-emphasis filtered. This could be detected by iTunes too. The second option is doing a lossless into lossless conversion but using some of the filters available, like those by iZotope, SoX, etc, there's even a program for Windows which directly converts and de-emphasizes, so the copy is playable on any computer and software combination. The third option, the one I'm investigating so I don't need keeping more than one copy of the files, is using some software that can either detect the pre-emph flag on the cue file, or just applying the filtering if you tell it to do so. This is what Foobar does by means of a plug-in. -
I know iTunes can playback pre-emphasis CDs on the fly applying the required filtering to de-emphasize them, but it won't play FLAC files, nor will apply the de-emphasis filter on ALAC files made from pre-emphasized FLAC files. So it's either de-emphasizing the FLAC files using SoX or some other filtering tool and playing back the new corrected files on your preferred software, or using some software that can de-emphasize FLAC files on the fly. Does this even exist? I'd like to know about any music playback software for OSX that can play pre-emphasized lossless files applying the required filtering on the fly. Thanks.

they didn't manage to fix it, so it's either recycling bin or paying 311€ for a new one The SE is doing great so far. I like the fingerprint ID thing.

Chic Corea - The Musician (2017) New album with a lot of guest artists. I'm not sure yet if this is some sort of live performances anthology or a brand new set. Liking it so far, freely available at Spotify, it's a 3 CD set.

The indy repair guys will look at the 5. They'll charge 40 euros if they manage to fix it. Seems like a fair deal. We'll know more on Friday.

I can't speak for the guy, nor for Apple's policies, but I'm let's say 99% sure that nothing shorted during the battery replacement. I did a pretty surgical work. I didn't use any metal tool to pull off the battery contact board or the battery itself, and the screwdrivers are magnetic, so the screws would stay attached to them and wouldn't fall accidentally on the board. Still something unnoticed could have happened. For what I found searching is that there's a batch of early iPhone 5's having some difference in a chip that would stop working when the unit is opened, and the symptoms are like that, the home and sleep buttons would stop working. Anyway, the SE is a nice device, same size yet faster and with a lot more of room to store music and pics. Today it's going to be the first day using it as the commute music source.

I've had to buy a new phone. I got the SE The guy at the repair facility, not directly an Apple Store but an authorised service, said that I'd need to put back in the original Apple battery, otherwise they cannot even look inside it He said that it smells like they won't be able to repair it, so they'd charge the full fee (311 euros) to get a new 5 in exchange of the old one. Wife says it doesn't sound that bad and that she could give some use to that iphone. This is world first, she hates cell phones, she doesn't use hers for other than emergencies and most of the times she has it off and out of charge. I'm going to try the chinese "indy" guys, I haven't visited them yet. We'll see, this could be the confirmation of Apple sabotaging the iPhone for you replacing the battery yourself.

For a 45% discount on a Carbon I would write a review in Swahili and open a Facebook account to shill out

When I had the chance to compare a LG true OLED display side by side with a Samsung QLED one, I liked the LG better. Big difference IMHO. I didn't see any plastic film on them, the stickers seemed directly on the panel surface.

I'm starting to be beyond the glasses breaking point, although not fully there yet, I still do well on the 5's screen. If I used Whatsapp and other writing apps more than I do, I'd be happier on a larger screen, that's sure. Those tiny buttons

My aging eyes like larger screens, but my pants and scrubs pockets don't. Ah, decisions, decisions

Thanks. I can imagine the SE is better than the oldish 5. Do you know if there are rational reasons (not that it's the HC style) or some other kind of reasons to get the 7 instead of the SE?
-
Yes, some people say it's a good solution for it has the closest to 0 Ohm output impedance among many portable players. I can do that over a fixed 5 too Decent sounds like "good enough" to me. I can do decent when commuting to work, and if I found a large difference compared to the Touch, I still can use it at on-call shifts or vacation trips. That's my guess too. I'm fearing they want their fee for a battery replacement, so if you don't pay the 101 euros for a new battery, you gotta pay them to unlock the phone I've found an official Apple approved place selling the SE like 80 euros cheaper than the Apple Store. With the savings I could have the 5 repaired The SE is getting more votes so far.

I'll try to have it fixed, it can't be that broken, and the battery is brand new already. i'm starting to consider getting a new 128GB. I like the looks and features of the 7, but I hate it not having a proper minijack audio output, so I find the SE very tempting, it's like 300 euros cheaper and the same size of the 5, which I love. My idea would be using it for music too, and retiring the iPod Touch, so I'd be thankful if someone had an opinion about the audio quality of the SE vs the 7 with that dongle.

Hell no, that's what Apple charges in Spain. No idea what the chinese indy guys would charge, not even if they'd accept the job. I see them more focused in easy things like replacing glasses, screens and batteries.
