  1. They offer some protection and will trip for appliances or humans etc. but aren't as good as when they are grounded and don't control current well enough for electronics etc. Still much better than trusting the circuit breaker to stop your kid getting shocked to hell. We are about to have the grounding fight with the outlets in our new home it's all weird because a single wall will have two 3-prongs that are correctly grounded and then one 2 prong. I'm hoping that the boxes are grounded somehow but I'm guessing it's going to cost a bit to get everything rewired...
  2. Those are the weirdest speakers I have ever seen
  3. Yeah "as is" is the option being taken especially after the Realtors kicked in.
  4. Thanks all. Luckily we did have a very thorough inspection done and the inspector found a bunch of stuff (most of it small) totaling out to $10k in his estimate. Though that doesn't include replacement of the heat pump/ac system for the addition which is functioning but a cheap brand and expected to fail soon. We figured that the seller would at least be willing to help with the furnace because the unit is so old and rusted out that the inspector said we needed to put carbon monoxide sensors everywhere. We were wrong. We were prepared to walk but our Realtor decided to take a cut of his fees to help offset the furnace. We will probably replace the heat pump system now too and are budgeting more for that. We are pretty sure that they just want us to walk. We ratified our offer minutes before another offer was going to come in and the other buyers are offering more and are willing to do "as is" so we are going to have to suck it up or walk. We are still getting the house for $65k less than originally listed for and I get significant pleasure knowing that at least we are preventing them from getting more money. Of course the source of all this information is the listing agent and she doesn't seem to be a very upstanding person (our agent is very unimpressed). We ran a bunch of comps and just by square footage and bedrooms we are getting a deal. I guess different less pleasurable version of a good deal is one where both sides are suitably pissed off.
  5. Yeah I know. I fully admit that it was a small % but we are very tired of the sellers tight-fisted bullshit.
  6. Almost walked away from the house purchase but our Realtors stepped in and covered half the price of a new furnace though the damn sellers and their Realtor didn't budge an inch.
  7. Took down all the Christmas decorations. A week later than planned but last weekend was lost to trying to buy a house. Photographer is coming on Tuesday to take pictures and first open house is in 8 days. I'm going to miss this house but the new one is going to be great for us I also took apart and fixed the dryer of our stacked washer/dryer after some jagbag from Sears told me that they didn't lubricate anything but just replace things. I'm pretty happy that I got it all fixed myself though I did drop some parts and have to use some of the old parts. In the end it works great.
  8. Happy Birthday!
  9. Happy belated belated birthday guys!
  10. Great news that you're able to accompany your wife! I hope everything goes smoothly.
  11. Only 10 min away so hopefully the movers don't cost too much.
  12. Under contract on the house. Now to close, move, and sell the old house.
  13. Wow really sorry to hear that the health issues continue Tom. I hope you are able to make the move soon and things start and keep improving.
  14. I love the Sony MDR-7520. I have not heard the Z7 (or ZX1000) but I have gotten the impression that the 7520 are more neutral than the consumer phones.
  15. Offer submitted last night. Hope to hear back from the seller this morning. If we are lucky we will bring our new daughter home to it rather than this house. Of course that will mean moving in the next month. Hopefully we don't have two mortgages for long.
  16. Yeah we are looking about 10min drive away towards DC.
  17. Went to see a more suburban home. Surprisingly liked it and I hope we are moving...
  18. Did you get the Sigma Art dongle? I thought you can adjust it permanently there.
  19. Cool. Mumm 36s are sweet. I used to sail a lot (took a swing at an Olympic campaign in the Finn) but I moved on to cycling about 5 years ago and have only raced/sailed a few times since. I had really stopped 2 years prior but kept up appearances by having a lightning for 2 years that I sailed 3/4 times. I have no plans to sail anywhere beyond the small lake where we have a place but I do look somewhat longingly at Washington Sailing Marina as I drive by on week days. Sailing enough to race competitively just doesn't fit into the schedule I have these days. Cycling is much better from that perspective and keeps me fitter too.
  20. Unfortunately not
  21. I'm thinking this year is the year I buy a Laser to start teaching the kids to sail.... I also mention this as I started looking at Nikon D810's and new lenses and that setup will buy me a new boat
  22. The 810 colors can be tweaked with on camera settings.... (well all of them can)
  23. ^ Yup or weight gains too. After my CF of a holidays I'm up another 15 lbs and now I'm the heaviest I've been in 4/5 years. That ends now, though working out is going to have to wait until I can walk without the aid of prescription painkillers.
  24. My buddy loves his Leica
