Hey guys there is a sweet deal right here on this forum, Deepak is selling his Meitner Melior Bitstream convertor (The Bit Box) asking $450.00. Send the unit to John Wright of Museatex and he will upgrade it for you for $550.00. For less than the cost of a Benchmark you will hace a DAC which will out sing all but a few Bidats out there. Last christmas Romy the cat sold one of John's Bidats for just under $6K and the most recent bit box is a better sounding unit. The price is right and you are supporting your own forum members.

Investigation into possible mods for the Stax SR-404
moray james replied to spritzer's topic in Headphones
What kind of adhesive did you use to mount the elements? Was it hard? If so a softer adhesive (when curred) might help to damp the structure a little. Just a thought. -
for those who are interested here is an interesting patent by Rudolf Gorike of AKG. you can find it by going to Google Patent and searching for this US patent number 4, 158,753. hope you find this usefull.

LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) Volume Control
moray james replied to Tachikoma's topic in Audio Accessories
a bud of mine has oe of George's Mk 2 units with a buffer and it is the best Passive pre that I have heard. The Passion unit built by a British company who's name I have forgotten is the same thing as is the Melos unit. George's unit sounds superb. You will most likely need a buffer and a battery supply enhances the quality of the sound. One resistor (variable in the signal path) how can you beat that? Gregs unit is just too inexpensive not to try I plan to as soon as they are back in stock. diyAudio Forums - Lightspeed Attenuator a new passive preamp - Page 1 -
Before I bought my Pro Lambda /SRM1 rig way back in the 80's I was torn between the Lambda and the Sigma. I listened to both but the length of time I had to do so was limited. I really wanted to have a phone that had the qualities of both. In the end I choose the Lambda's. I used to listen to them and play with the angle of the elements relative to my ears by compressing the the cushions to simulate the Sigma effect and often wished that there was something in between the two models. To me JaZZ has nailed it. I think that Birgir is right in how important a solid frame structure is. The slanted O2 pads that I have on my Smeggy Gamma phones is a nice compromize in that they permit one to adjust the angle of incident between the element and the ear. Regarding the protective grills I think that they look very good and different size openings could be played with. Another option might be to include a layer of 1/16 inch open insect screen beneath the metal grid. This can be obtained in black fiberglass which could be tensioned and fixed into place then covered by the metal grid. Perhaps Smeggy might be willing to share his source for the plastic grills he uses (at least I think the grills in my phones are plastic they might be powder coated aluminum) which look superb (the whole phone looks superb). I really enjoy seeing people do such excellent work and very much appreciate that they share their work with all of us.

I was impressed to see the great work done on these two sets of Stax Lambda Pro drives by Jazz over at Head Fi that I thought that his post should be duplicated here for members to see. Don't know how many times I played with my Lambda phones on my head to see if I could simulate Sigma style sound. Kudos to Jazz for two jobs well done. See JaZZ's custom made Stax Phones here...Homemade Headphones? - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio Jazz's comments below..... The idea of making my own housings for Stax drivers was born out of my experience with the Lambda and the Sigma Pro. Whereas the Lambda sounded too shrill (with the SRM-1 [?]) -- and almost literally caused toothache --, the Sigma's sound was too boomy, diffuse, muddy and lacked midrange (with the SRM-T1). I wanted to strike a balance between both, conveying some of the Sigma's spatiality and bass fullness, but preserving the electrostatic virtues such as resolution, accuracy, detail and refinement -- which were mostly lost with the Sigma -- and at the same time reduce the Lambda's treble glare. So I decided to go the middle course between the two designs, i.e. angling the drivers, but clearly less than the Sigma's ~80

you can contact magnepan and they will tell you how much to restore to brand new. you would need to package them and cover shipping both ways as well. decide if that price is good for you for a brand new set of 1.5 maggies. you could also rebuild your self (project see diyaudio dot com MUG, maggie user group) but this is some work so your call there. you can buy a set of factory brand nes MMG's direct from magnepan for about $600.00 which are probably a better speaker and smaller. Either speaker will ultimately require a sub so the smaller size is not a issue. all maggies are very inefficient so you will require a real amp to drive them if you want to make them do what they can so consider 100 watts minimun and 200 watts per channel a good working size amp. smaller tube amps can work but with a speaker of this sensitivity horsepower rules the day. maggies will last a long time for the most part ever units with signs of starting delamination can run for years and years just fine. hope this helps to give you some options.

Is Building a Power Cable Similar to Building an Interconnect
moray james replied to The Monkey's topic in Do It Yourself
have been using my Aeropress to make my black teas. Works very well with far less tannons very smooth and rich flavor. I typically use a half a tea bags worth of loose tea and one scoop of water just off boiled temp stir for twenty cout (one thousand, two thousand etc,) press and mix in desired amount of water (boiled). Kind of like an Americano. By the way the Areopress make (to me) the best coffee I have ever had). Check it out . [url=http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress_story.htm]Aerobie -
The RCA 7025 is to me the best 12AX I have listened to. The 7025 is an ultra low noise 12AX and it has dual heater coils which are wound in opposite directions to cancel heater supply noise amongst other physical differences. Sovtec build a copy of a 7025 not as good bu not bad either and very inexpensive. I still like the RCA 7025 best. I am with Birgir as far as EL34's go Mullards are very well balanced with excellent mids. You could also play with 6CA7. 6CA7 / EL34 Vacuum Tube List 12AX7 Vacuum Tube List

Is Building a Power Cable Similar to Building an Interconnect
moray james replied to The Monkey's topic in Do It Yourself
here is a link for a shop in HK that sells the knock offs but does not say so. the copy units have two bright metal female screw inserts on the inside of the barrels which accept the two screws that hold the plug to the barrel. If you can purchase any of these for a good price you will have solidly built and good sounding plugs for not a lot of money. simply good bang for the buck. these are as I said better built plugs than Marinco's and such for about the same amount of money. the internal clamps are solid but will benefit from an upgrade to SS clamp screws which allows for a very tight clamp. the fact that you can get them with different metal plate (ie. gold, silver) is a bonus if you care to experiment. there is quite a vairence in the selling price as many do not know these are copy plugs and so get taken but if you get them for a fair price (20-25 dollars or so) you have done well. http://cgi.ebay.ca/OYAIDE-P-037-US-Power-Plug-C-037-IEC-Connector-Set_W0QQitemZ270344358594QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item270344358594&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 the picture in this ad shows the metal barrel inserts fairly well. -
Is Building a Power Cable Similar to Building an Interconnect
moray james replied to The Monkey's topic in Do It Yourself
For those who doubt but are curious you might purchase some of the Oyaide "knock offs" that sell on E-Bay. They sell for the same dollar value as a standard brass plug such as a Marinco. These "copy" plugs while not as good sounding or built as well as an Oyaide do sound very good. They will afford you the chance to listen to gold plate and silver plate plugs for the standard plug cost. They are better built and better sounding than any other reasonable cost plugs that I know of. Hope this is of interest. -
Is Building a Power Cable Similar to Building an Interconnect
moray james replied to The Monkey's topic in Do It Yourself
make sure you choose a dielectric rated for 300 volts or higher. Stranded wire is a lot nicer to ues. Fluropolymer dielectrics like teflon will cold flow so if a chair or such pinches the cable the dielectric can flow and could result in a short. Configurations that work for interconnect will work for power cables/speaker cables. If you want to offset the inductance in a cable you can cut one in half and reasymble so that the twist reverses at the half way point, this trick has been used in computer cables. A foil shielded twisted pair makes a nice powercord (use the drain as your ground wire). You can also make some good looking (your choice of colors) cable braiding PVC insulated 300-600 volt rated hook up wire into a three wire braid ala kimber. Oyaide plugs are very expensive but are EXCELLENT and the different metal plate options allow you to flavor tune your system. Many find it hard to believe (if they have not heard any) but they represent superb value in a fine system. Start with a really good power cord at your source and move outward from there. -
Tony all the small ones are well small. They are all half size chassis. The bit box = the Bitstream Convertor and the Idat-44 and Idat-M. The Idat-M is really wonderful as it is totally off of the mains running on a battery. My first Bidat was worked on till I had to sell it as It would not take anymore iron heat. My second Bidat sounded far better when I sold it. I have settled on the bit box but I really do love the way an Idat-M sounds. Take the time and get one of each and then decide for yourself. Remember also that John is always comming up with something extra just when you think things just could not get any better. So there is a lot of milage to be had from one of these boxes.

buy a used Meitner/Museatex DAC any one Bidat, Melior Bitstream convertor, Idat-44 or Idat-M. Send it to John Wright and have him totally upgrade it for you and you are done like dinner. The three small ones can sometimes be found for under $400.00 in the used market but the Bidat will break your budget unless you luck out and steal one. Used a Bidat normally goes for around a minimum of $1500.00 these days so look to one of the other three. Of the three small ones the bit box is the most analog sounding with the Idats sounding a little more digital but still less so than a Bidat. Mods on the small ones will run around $700.00 and a Bidat mods for about $1000.00. Since the Idat-M is an auto convertor it will run right off a battery which sounds fantastic and is a major bonus to consider. So what will it compare to you ask? Allowing for personal preference anything you like at any price. Strong claim yes. You asked for somethng to run with your O2's so here you go.

does any body know these Stax amps?
moray james replied to moray james's topic in Headphone Amplification
Thanks guys I appreciate the information. Have any of you compared the sound of the SRM-001 to either of these small amps? The 001 looks like a good little amp for the money. You cant build an amp like this for the kind of money you can buy one for. Thanks for the circuit info Kevin. Have the 313 & 001 schematic so that pretty much covers these then (thanks to you). Regards Moray James. -
Wanting to know the differences between the SRM-252 Mk2, the SRM-252A and the SRM-001. Do all three uses the same amplifier circuit? I Know that the SRM-001 uses a switching supply that I assume that the table top models do not but are the circuits the same?

personally I believe that the 6V6 is one of the special audio tubes. I think that I like it better as a pentode as opposed to wired as a triode, the pentode has fun bass. I also like the EL34 and the 6BM8 (which in Japan is like out 300B in status). The 6V6 is sweet and hass good bass and sounds good when you push it. Nice tube lots around. The Electro Harmonic will let you runn at higher voltages but then if some one sticks in a regular 6V6 you will be poppin bottles. 6BQ5 is also on the special tube list, lots of fine guitar amps built around that one (audio too).

For electrostatics, which 1K source?
moray james replied to blessingx's topic in Home Source Components
This may be a stretch for you but if you want something truly refreshing and you have a sence for adventure give it your consideration. Firsst do you like digital or analog? If you like digital find a Museatex Idat44 or an IdatM and if you like analog find a Museatex bitstream convertor (early version is nice sub ser. no. 400 or so). Send the unit to John Wright at Museatex.com and have it fully upgraded. When you get it back and burn it in take to the homes of all the people you know that own Ed Meitner's EMM Lab digital gear and compare the two units. Ask Romy the cat how he likes his BiDat. Ask Romy about John's work. Good luck on your journey.
