  1. I'm going to let the Salted one know about this mini-meet as well since he's just down in MA. Maybe he can make the trip?
  2. Lemee guess, he's working on another portable amp.
  3. Talk to thrice or cotdt, I think they've both had newer Denons apart.
  4. My guess is Ray saw Headroom/SP/Rudi/Meier all planning SS balanced amps and figured he'd better join the party. What's funny is that at last fall's Boston Meet Ray and I had a pretty long conversation about how he thought he'd never be able to sell a multi-thousand dollar SS amp and that tubes were the only thing that would work in that category. So I'm not sure he had the Apache in the pipeline all that long.
  5. Being the captain of camp Ray Samuels I'm guessing that the super secret project he's had listed in his sig for half a year now is something from Ray.
  6. Yeah, I read some of those and it sounded like a 50:50 proposition. I just hate it when they don't give a series like that an opportunity to wrap things up in any fashion (from what I've read). I don't need answers to everything but a couple wouldn't be all bad. I'm sure I'll still enjoy the heck out of the next two seasons, I just wish there was going to be more.
  7. My Ipod is going on 3 years strong and it only cooked itself once. [me=nate]knocks furiously on wood[/me]
  8. I can't believe you fucking cocksuckers didn't tell me that Deadwood was canceled after Season 3!!!
  9. I'd much rather have a SB3 and a nice DAC than a Imod/dock.
  10. I'm not pissed off and I don't think anyone else is. Furthermore I'm hardly the compass of what should or should not be posted here. I've just been noticing a trend lately (not related to any one individual either) of less and less actual content. Don't get me wrong, I get a lot of entertainment out of these forums but I thought Head-case was actually progressing towards a good place for serious audio discussion, which I thought was a good thing.
  11. This thread would be better deleted. If people are going to claim this forum as an alternate to head-fi it'd be nice if the entire thing wasn't a mockery, just my 2c.
  12. Sunday is the only day that I could make it. When is jpak due back from his trip?
  13. I've heard that to get the most out of the cryo process you have to use a cryo'd cryo machine. Of course the machine that cryo's the cryo'd cryo should also be cryo'd. And considering that the first cryo machine couldn't possibly be a cryo'd cryo the whole process is rendered null and void.
  14. Deadwood - Season 2 - Episode 1 Shit, piss and corruption, here we go again.
  15. Seems to me that if it's just going to be Ian, deepak and me that we should probably abandon ship rather than sink $100 into a 3 person mini-meet.
  16. Bummer man, huge bummer. Definitely don't trash it - it sounds like the output shorted and the resistors did their job of becoming a fuse. Take it back down to a single board, replace the obviously damaged parts and see what happens. Like Marshall said, there will be people willing to help you out.
  17. Do yourself a favor, get a 4-40 tap and holder. You'll use it more than you ever thought possible if you keep building things.
  18. I wonder what cotdtech charges for labor.
  19. Definitely planning to see it.
  20. Well, for me the excuse used to be that since I didn't have a balanced source (and wasn't really planning to have one) that I might as well build the best performing single-ended rig that I could. Of course that's been rendered moot now with the new DAC but if I was an SE guy I'd still go 3 channel instead of 2, the cost difference isn't that great.
  21. JB's pretty much nailed the parts cost for the additional two boards but the biggest expense is in the chassis. The least expensive option that I'm looking at for the two chassis for my beta22 is ~$400 (total). I've seen folks cram a 4-channel build into a single chassis (not recommended in my book) which would halve that number. Also, by going to 6 channels you'd need to use 2 power supplies, a 4-channel build could run off 1. There's another $100 there.
  22. You're close, but let me try to clean it up the last little bit. With a 4-channel configuration you can listen both balanced and unbalanced. Four channels is all you need for balanced operation but the single-ended side of things with 4 channels would be using what is referred to as a "passive ground". With a 6-channel configuration balanced operation is identical to the 4-channel setup however in single-ended operation both SE outputs would be driven with an "active ground". Folks like tangent, amb and others have long argued the benefits of an active ground channel. I won't pretend to understand it all or even be able to accurately explain it but if you want more information I'll try to dig it up for you.
  23. I think for the most part it would be fine with the one notable exception being that K340s have been known to give low gain amps fits. If I had to build a single-ended version again I would drop the gain from the 8 that I used the first time. I think that my balanced amp is going to run 3/6 (3 single ended, 6 balanced) but I'm not 100% sure on that just yet. I'll certainly be doing some testing while I'm building my amp.
  24. Essentially that's correct. There are ways to do it but none that really should be implemented on an amp of this caliber. Depending on the gain setting the beta uses different compensation caps so not only would you have to be switching resistors but also caps. The amount of wiring that this would take would surly degrade the signal and invite noise (the bad kind).
  25. Sorry about that, I bought the last two. I'm pretty sure they're ordering more though. And yes, the 6 channels are to allow the amp to run as two single-ended, active ground amps at the same time.
