Translation, about what one should expect for $65 headphones. If one wants good closed sound the only option I've heard is the D5000s.

I take it that none of the commercial offerings are acceptable? I mean I've seen teflon ribbon cables, but never blank runs of just the jacket. And how many of what gauge?

I have a really hard time picturing the Air as the only computer that I'd own. You're paying a huge tax for weight and form-factor and would get a lot more bang for your buck with their other offerings if you insist on going Apple. I'd have to travel more than 50% of my working life to even start to consider something like it and even then it'd just be for travel. It also strikes me (much like the eeepc) as something that will get much better in its second generation.

I've never heard the highs get tamed by bowls. If anything they get more pronounced.

I'd be surprised if it existed. There are just too many combinations that different applications could want. What would be wrong with just individual strands either twisted or braided together? Just because Stax does it flat ribbon style doesn't mean that everything else has to be the same, right?

I guess I should have called this line of cables the "recstar" but SUCKITALO just seemed more fun. The only other name in contention was LIMITOFAUDIOGOODNESS but that seemed like it would just be too long and difficult to say.

I don't think that there's much love for them but those who like them aren't instantly shat upon. At least not to my memory but I've been wrong before.

No, not you specifically. More to the general tone of some who absolutely slam some stats routinely and make "pffft" noises at anyone who likes them. I just didn't want to see the thread go any further down that road so I tried to make light of it a little bit. Heck, I don't even have a vested interested in this thread (NO STATS!!!) but I still enjoy reading about stuff I may one day own.

I think like everything else there are no universal truths in headphones and when some folks insist on stating their opinions as fact (as has been done repeatedly in this thread) it doesn't help any. Example, I've heard the HE60s driven by a KGSS, sounded fricken great to my ears. But then again I though the same thing about the HE60s driven by a T-Amp through a Stax transformer box so maybe my ears just suck? Or maybe I don't have a definition of what the perfect "sound" is and therefore I am able to enjoy a wider variety of headphones because I'm not comparing them to any sort of expected ideal.

Not really sure, my guess is that it's about the same size.

Thanks, I do as well. They're pretty reasonably priced and I like the fact that they are color coded, it saves on the heat shrink needed.
