I'm with Ian, Afterglow left me feeling like she'd given up and should have stopped in 1997.

I'm guessing that we'd need ~10 of us to make this work. And I'm not sure how I feel about making the chassis part of it, that tends to be a very individual selection and given the cost impact in both raw cost and shipping expenses I'd prefer to leave it out. About the KGSS, isn't there a parts availability problem with some of the parts involved?

Congrats on nuking your own PM account. That's special.

All set here as well.

LIES! Team Budget-Stat, Unite! Seriously though, what needs to happen is to get enough of us together around a pretty straightforward SS design (maybe an adapted SRM-1) so that we can group buy the expensive stuff and save some $$. If I had any skills at pcb layout I'd have a go at it but alas, I'm a fish out of water when it comes to that.

My eyes are pretty sensitive as well, I don't go anywhere without sun glasses. I've also found that plastic framed sun glasses usually play pretty well with helmets (metal frames do not) and are far more effective and easier to deal with compared with a tinted shield. There are lots of times, especially during the summer, that I can't live without the shield up.
-
Best of luck with the mirrored shield, I've never had much luck with them and they suck after the sun goes down.

I have this sinking suspicion that I'll be building one of these...

One more thing that I should have mentioned earlier, in both of my experiences I found that the K340 needed to be driven hard (i.e. louder) to sound complete to my ears. Listening at what I typically do db-wise was very unsatisfying with the stock pair that I had first and while better with the second modded pair I still found myself wanting to listen louder than I would with other cans. I was probably still in the safe zone in either case but my environment is very quiet so elevated levels are rarely required.

You could also think about a DIY/custom built better version of the SRD7, couldn't you? I wonder what the Stax experts opinion's would be on how much better quality trafos would run you? Otherwise there isn't much to the thing internally from what I understand.

It would probably work ok, but I don't know what type of current output capacity that amp has. It's got plenty of gain (and probably voltage swing) but it is pretty cheaply made and certainly not the best pairing. If money is tight the K340 is not the headphone to buy.
-
Glad to see you learned your lesson. From what I've seen your options are few and far between and your only way to get a lower price is to either buy used or to import them and deal with limited warranty support.

transformer/autoformer-based volume control?

Holy heck, at that price I'd probably just go w/ an RK50. -
Ryan, I've tried them multiple times now, both stock and modded and have yet to find a good reason to own them over the Senn 650s (or 600s for that matter). That's not to say that I don't think they're on par with the Senns, I'd actually say in terms of relative fidelity (accuracy, neutrality, etc.) that they are similar in terms of overall performance I just happen to prefer the Senns in every rig I've tried them in. Like a lot of things it's going to come down to whether or not they're your cup of tea and fit well in your rig. As far as amplification is concerned you're going to want something with boat loads of current and voltage gain. My PPA V2 w/ a gain of 8 wasn't up to the task w/ a 1V source. The Wheatfield HA-2 w/ the Hertsens was a lot better and pushed me to the edge of keeping the K340s. Ultimately though my interest in them waned and I decided to try something else (the failed W5000 experiment). And depending on the FOTMness prices can make them very unattractive. There was a time when stock pairs were going for ~$300 (for anything in a condition that I'd buy anyway) which is at least $100 more than I'd pay for them. Larry's mods aren't cheap either so be sure to factor that into whether or not you want to make a run at them. At a minimum you're looking at ~$275 and I personally would want a 3 meter cable, why he even offers a 1m length is beyond me. Like you're going to use these portably and have an amp in your shirt pocket... [/ramble]

Tony, I have a hard time giving any advice given how quickly you seem to mow through gear.

Steve, Last I knew there was no ETA on the uber controller, has that changed? Heck, they've been out of stock of Joshua Tree boards for months now and I just checked the DIY Audio thread and there's no ETA, just "soon". Here's to hoping you aren't without a source for too long!
-
The first was definitely better, although the second was still reasonably entertaining.
-
What makes you ask?
-
Glad to hear that damage doesn't seem too bad (in light of recent events).
-
Semi-off topic, Jay, you need to find yourself a copy of the movie Faster.
-
Just buy postjack's 12L's, you know you want to. Actually, just do it so I can stop looking at them...

Woah! What's up with the quick thread locks lately?

You just don't get it, do ya? -
Purchased used or not I still believe the warranty would be in effect unless they were illegally imported, even then you'd think that Grado might back their statement headphone. There's no excuse for a $1000 headphone falling apart like that and it shouldn't be the owner's responsibility to fix it.
