The Buffalo gets a lot of good press, haven't heard mine yet. And before it the Opus was pretty well thought of although I'm only reporting what I've heard here. You might search the site and find out who owns or has owned one and ask them directly.

Hammond has a pretty extensive line. What size do you need? Hard to suggest a chassis without knowing if you need 2" x 2" or 24" x 24".

I think that the boutique kitchen, or at least being able to convince homeowner's that they are worth 50k is something we might never see come back. I didn't see that it was variable at all, 12 steps is probably ok as long as you can change it on the fly and don't have to pop a cover and swap belts or some such nonsense.

Rather than fight with chassis choices looking for something to provide the shielding I'd just order a potted and shielded transformer. Other solutions have a way of appearing kludgey without a lot of careful planning.

I suppose you could in essence make a TREAD an unregulated supply by manipulating the resistor values so that the desired output range could never be achieved. Then you'd only be dealing with the drop over the reg in terms of heat dissipation. Not exactly elegant, but cheap and might work although I haven't plugged this scenario into Tangent's estimator to see what it looks like.

Careful working with steel, it doesn't drill nearly as nicely as that aluminium stuff.
