  1. I'm a little nervous about what appear to be wood screws securing the tube sockets. I'd be simple enough to replace them if that's what is going on and probably worth the effort.
  2. I wonder if it's future mini-usb to be fully compatible with the new Macbook line? I suppose that's the logical assumption but odd that they would modify every chassis for it before it's ready for prime time. And even more suspicious that it doesn't have a label to go along with it. Only time will tell what they've got cooking.

I just thought the Reaper was season-appropriate. Plus, I like Rykarda a lot too.
  4. Depends on how you want it set up. PM me if you like.
  5. We need pictures, stat.
  6. I life has taught me anything it is that the last thing that I need is a sharper knife.
  7. Get home safe Naaman.
  8. Do what I did, give up and start paying someone else to do it.
  9. Yeah, it's an ABC Suunto Core watch. I like it, only bad reports I've heard are with respect to the accuracy of the altimeter (don't care) and that it's not all that great on battery life. So I bought a dozen batteries on Ebay for $10.
  10. While you were gone Peter, I got a watch I think you might approve of.
  11. Yo, Mr. Chalk, welcome the F back.
  12. Congrats, Laine!
  13. We generally just call that behavior by its given location, "The South".

  15. I think the "missing" items have been discussed here before haven't they?
  16. I'll have to watch all of that at some point. Thanks for the link, it's pretty damn cool.
  17. Pffft, flux is for wimps. My hatred of SMD stems from the position part, try to tape part down, find that part shifted, remove tape, reposition part, try to tape part down, wash, rinse, repeat routine. I've gotten a lot better at it from when I was building MINTs 4 years ago but I'd still prefer to avoid it whenever possible.
  18. Glad to hear that it's sounding good. I think if I'm going to go through the hell that is SMD for me I'm going to man-up and build one of amb's y1 DACs when the boards become available.
  19. Good call, they claim that it's ok driving headphones directly and would probably suffice as a decent office amp/dac if you don't mind software manipulation of the volume.
  20. It's certainly been done. But yes, you are correct in assuming that the casework is probably the most challenging bit, especially if overall size has to be limited. Some parts of the Alien DAC can also be tricky if you are not all that familiar with SMD soldering.
  21. I watched the first half, I'm really enjoying it. But I'm exhausted and want to enjoy the second half rather than half sleep through it so it'll have to wait for another night.

  23. Thanks, I'd have to double check since I didn't buy the chassis (it came with the parts that I bought) but I'd guess it's 17x12x2. The height is going to be tight and clearly real estate is at a premium. The Electraprint iron isn't exactly small though. I'm pretty sure that the grommet is part number 9311K139 and yes they are from McMaster Carr. If you search for Vibration Control Grommet you'll find a range of sizes and styles. I picked these on a recommendation from a friend who had used them in several projects. One of these days I'll get back to chassis fab, but runny noses have been hurting my efficiency. And of course, welcome to Head-case. There's a few other NH/New England folks around here although the DIY contingent is a little on the light side.
  24. Pete, Be very careful selecting a case with very tight dimensions, especially from Hammond's line of small steel enclosures. I used one of the 1415 series of steel project boxes to house a transformer once and had to do a lot of "customization" to get it to fit because of the rather large lip that these cases have. The 1415C at 6 x 5 x 4H might work for you. That said, one of those with a little Mu Metal took care of all of the noise issues I was having with the first beta22 that I built so it does work. Nate

    Custom IEM's

I disagree, cheap POS in line attenuators can do a lot more to screw up a signal then a pair of well matched high quality resistors.
