  1. Yikes Haj, looks like a lot of cleanup ot be done there. Stuff keeps falling out of the trees in my front yard so no sense even getting started for a few more days.
  2. Hmmmm... /me contemplates not shipping the beta until 1/1/09
  3. I believe that Frihed was responding to yet another old thread and relaying a story about an alleged SR71 sighting while he was in the service.
  4. Deepak, They said Wednesday for me as well but it came on last night. Here's to hoping that they were way off for you as well.
  5. I got up this morning and cleaned out the fridge (thankfully it was pretty empty anyway) and figured I drive over to the local dodo's for some coffee (no cream in house). 2 miles away there's still no power and some roads are still closed with wires and tress across them. So I count myself very lucky to be cozy right now. Nice purchase Jack, I too will be curious to see what you end up thinking of it compared to 840C.
  6. Ken, Too tired to get anything done tonight, just semi-packed up all the temporary heating gear. Left it convenient enough that if I have to set it up again it won't take very long but the wife shouldn't freak out too bad when she gets home. Haj, I was certainly psyched when it came back. While I was gone today my parents came down to watch the house for a while said one of the local cops stopped by to see if we were ok and to give out some info regarding shelters and such. My dad asked him if he'd heard anything about when power might be restored, he said from what he was hearing Monday to Wednesday. I guess things are going better than expected around here which is nice. I've heard rumors of towns west of here where the power company is referring to the repairs in terms like "rebuilding the entire infrastructure". And I didn't take many pictures but here are a few. This tree used to be normal looking and a good 10' taller. (apologies for the extreme over-exposure) The back yard to show the entire forest coated in ice. I'd say the average thickness of ice on things was ~3/8". This was not an uncommon sight, even on my way home tonight a full 2 days after the end of the storm.
  7. Well, we'll see how long it lasts but the lights (and heat) just came back on 5 minutes or so ago. Was sitting watching a movie on the laptop in the dark when all of a sudden the heat kicked on. WUHOO!
  8. Glad to hear that you had fun Vincent. After nearly 48hrs the lights just came back on in my house, there are many still without and there's no guarantee that they'll stay on here. Sorry to have missed you guys, guess we'll have to reconvene in Cali June, eh?
  9. No way to be sure, there is still a telephone/power pole across the road just over a mile from the house. It's snapped off half way up so it'll have to be replaced. I don't know if we're upstream or downstream from there but I still have yet to see anyone headed that way to start fixing it so I'm guessing tomorrow will be the earliest we might see power. At least the cold front is supposed to push through tonight and things may be as warm as 50 on Monday.
  10. #1 - 20lbs of propane - still no heat, still no power but the portable heater is mostly managing to keep up and not let things get any colder. #2 - 4 bank electrical heater - my dad brought down a small generator today and we're using it to run this electrical heater in the upstairs which was loosing a degree every 6 hrs or so. Tonight will be another night of babysitting heaters, it's supposed to get down into the single digits so hopefully the twin heater setup will be able to hold serve.
  11. I've been home and I'm back at the in-laws tonight. I'll definitely be babysitting a heater tonight, it's 53 in the upstairs of the house, don't want it to get much colder than that for sure. On my way home I took note, the last light I saw was 20+ miles from the house and still nothing remotely resembling a utility repair truck. Shit.
  12. Odds are my night will be spent at the house cycling the propane heater on and off in an effort to keep things above freezing.
  13. Well that's just NH, I'm sure VT, ME and MA have their fair share of outages as well. I'll post up some pics when I'm back home. I'd say the trees in my front yard lost at least 25% of their branches. Last night it was like fireworks, you could just lay there and listen to the trees snapping in the forest.
  14. Yeah, it sucks, timing is unbelievable since I was all packed and ready to go the NYC meet tomorrow as well. We'll stay with the in-laws for however long is necessary, we're there now, since they were far enough south (about 30 miles as the crow flies) to have only gotten rain. My parents who live about 50 miles to the north got a lot of ice too but somehow still have power even though several surrounding towns are completely black. Estimates right now are saying about 25% or more of the state is without power (300,000ish). A generator would be able to help but the installation of something like that isn't all that simple. It's not like the furnace has a wall plug that you could just swap over to the gennie when the power goes out. So you'd have to have some sort of mains switch on it to swap over to the backup power source. It's something I've certainly thought about since this is the second major ice storm in 3 years. Too bad you can't (or I can't) DIY something like that.
  15. Not mine, no power, no heat. If we were just without power but still had heat I'd be a lot less concerned. What we're hearing right now is that some areas may be without power until mid next week and with temps this weekend supposed to be dipping into single digits that doesn't bode well.
  16. No, I have an oil fired furnace. It doesn't run without power.
  17. Yeah, but there's enough stuff in the house that I can't do that with (forced hot water heat pipes for example) that it doesn't really matter if the water pipes don't freeze, the pipe right next to it probably will.
  18. I just bought (or had my dad buy on my behalf) an 8000BTU indoor propane heater to hopefully keep my pipes from freezing this weekend. The damage from the ice storm is impressively bad and there wasn't a utility truck within 10 miles of my house this morning so there isn't much hope of seeing power today or tomorrow.
  19. The price sounds right based on what I've been hearing for a few years now (north of $1k MSRP).
  20. JBLoudG20 - Whine Like a Little Bitch
  21. 4 x 600uF/500V ASC film caps For what, I don't know, but large value caps show up so infrequently it seemed like a good idea at the time.
  22. I think Towert is honestly just curious, he's not the type to call someone out in my experience.
  23. I've never met the man but I did get to hear the amp. It was one table over from me and it is both a work of art and sounds amazing as well. If I had the cash Blackie would be on the short list of people I'd consider commissioning for a build.
  24. I second the Outlaw recommendation, I use one of their receivers with my Paradigm Monitor series speakers.
  25. Out of simply morbid curiosity I want to see the power supply.
