  1. To me it simply does not have the same magic, all the parts are similar to many of the Moth/EC amps but to my eye it just doesn't add up to the same whole. It's certainly not ugly by any stretch but it doesn't make me go either.
  2. Hmm, I'm clearly going to be in the minority but I'd say that's my least favorite of the amps he's designed lately. I'm an unabashed admirer of the Moth aesthetic too.
  3. I don't find Nikon lenses to be particularly overpriced (in this category of lens) and to think that someone else could cover more length for significantly less money seems unlikely. And as someone else noted, it's reportedly very slow in use which to me just about negates any usefulness if it happened to be optically superior. By all accounts Nikon hit a home run with the 18-200, while it's not perfect in any respect it is the perfect consumer-grade lens.
  4. Oh, I'm not building...just unpacking hopefully.
  5. There may be good news for you ~10pm tonight, at a minimum I'd suggest to plan on bringing the O2's.
  6. Given the impedance curve of the HD800 they may wish that they'd done something else. And I'm with everyone on the spacing of the jacks potentially creating big problems for users. As it is I bet there are cables that won't work with the amp or will at least be stretched uncomfortably. Add more space to the equation and it could get ugly.
  7. 1. Yes, the external flash is absolutely worth it, I'm 99% sure that's the same flash I use and love. Get yourself a diffuser (~$20) for times when it just isn't possible to bounce. 2. It's almost guaranteed the Tamron is nowhere near as good as the Nikon. As for those that say the 18-200 isn't sharp enough, jesus christ you guys must be those that shoot full resolution RAW and then examine every pixel at 100% zoom on 24" monitors looking for a lack of sharpness. Or professionals, in which case the lens was never meant for you. For hacks like myself (and I suspect Todd) the gear is so far from being the limiting factor in our images it's laughable.
  8. Happy Birthday Al!

  10. Unless I am completely misunderstanding the circuit that this is at least loosely based around (and granted, that is possible) I would think that this would make a less than ideal preamp. I don't quite get the impedance switch either and am curious to ask a few questions this weekend.
  11. You have no idea... I'm going to try and talk with Jack about it, I have no idea how they're feeding two 6080s with a single 5U4 rectifier unless they're running at really low current levels on the output tubes. Because the development cycle was done now?
  12. Sia - Some People Have Real Problems
  13. You know, I read that for the first time today and can't think of a time when I've had that problem with mine. I don't shoot a lot but metering has never been an issue. User error, now that's a different story.
  14. Did you read the welcome PM? If not, I suggest doing it again before you hit the reply button. If you did, read it again. And welcome.
  15. You get one more chance to prove you're not a jackass.

  17. Todd, I'd look around and see if you can't find a good deal on a leftover D80. A quick google suggested it might be possible to pickup the body for ~$500 which would leave you almost enough to get the 18-200VR lens. That's what I shoot with 99% of the time. I just checked, Adorama still has D80s NIB and offers a few kits that might be appealing.
  18. So who's going to make it this weekend? I'll be rolling with Ian and another non-headcaser along with ~150lbs of gear.
  19. I like it, enough to already be listening to it again. The whole album is one long story allegedly and has a pretty cool guest appearance. And YGPM.
  20. Doesn't Neutrik make the jacks (maybe not the 4-pin) with the locks removed?
  21. I wish that he'd a) remove the locking mechanism from the 4-pin jack, it's 100% unnecessary and detracts form the look of the amp and while he's at it rear mount the 4-pin jack, it would clean up and otherwise very aesthetically pleasing design. 2 pretty minor quibbles, hope to hear one some day.

  23. From what I've read you have to at least have purchased the development pack ($99) in order to activate the beta.
