Thanks guys. Ari and I will be working on her a bit this weekend to see if we can tweak some of the buzz out of the output. It's pretty ok with even low impedance open headphones but not with closed cans. We've got a pretty good idea where to start so I'm hopeful she can be made to have an acceptably black background. These types of things are to be expected with PTP builds so I'm not surprised.

Thanks! Actually yes, I had given that some thought and it wouldn't be hard to do with the two existing LEDs. What I had considered doing was drilling an LED sized hole in the terminal board and just poking the LED through that way. Since I have a ring of holes around the base of each tube for ventilation I'm pretty sure you'd be able to see the LEDs light. In the end in the interest of time and actually not wanting any sort of "tube illumination" I abandoned that concept. Question though, how would you propose to tap an LED off of B+?

CJ - it's just time, patience and by laying wiring diagrams out beforehand. It doesn't happen by accident. I'd say I spent somewhere between 6 and 8 hours wiring it and that was after having laid everything out beforehand. Example - you'll notice that the tube sockets are orientated such that the filament wires don't have to cross over any of the other pins to make their connections. That is 100% intentional and something I specifically looked at before laying out the top panel of the amp. In a way, yes, as in don't do it his way. Really it just goes to show you how much of a failure his operation was. I'm an amateur yet he somehow makes me look like a pro. Not very good. Noise floor is currently too high, but I'm working on that. But even at the end of my tweaking I'd never pick anything with tubes in it for IEMs unless it was truly professionally built for them. It's not even for sale (yet).

It'd be helpful if they carried the dB scale all the way around the waterfall so you could see where the graph starts and stops and some sort of meaningful sense of scale could developed for the intermediary information. As it is I have no idea how large that hump is somewhere around 5k. Could be 5db, could be more like 7 or 8.

I'd drop the AT service center an email or phone call and see if they'll send you parts. Glue might work, but I'd prefer a more permanent fix.

So this seemed as good a place as any to post the final details of this. Might as well have all my insanity in one convenient location (for now). Earlier in the year I sold the Menace. Sad day, for sure, but one that ultimately became more and more necessary as Lily started to take over more and more of the space that I formerly called audio-home. Let's face it, when push comes to shove she's small but deceptively powerful. Anyway, as I found myself now headphone ampless I started digging through drawers in my diy workshop looking to see if I had enough parts to build a power supply for my long out of service Millett Hybrid. What I found was that in typical Nate fashion I'd acquired an insane degree of spare parts for the Menace. So with a little help from Ari (nikongod) we tweaked an existing design that used the same tube compliment by had a transformer coupled output and created what I named the MenaceTC Lite. Why Lite? Well, two reasons, one it weighs less than the original Menace due largely to the fact that it uses a SS power supply and two, the real MenaceTC is still sitting in 4 more boxes and is my "keep me sane this winter" project. When I get a chance I'll try to finish up the Lite schematic and post it, it's a deceptively simple looking beast but is not without it's share of neat tricks. For one thing it's a choke filtered power supply rather than the typical throw a huge cap in there style, it uses LEDs to bias the input tube along with some other trickery that Ari will have to explain. But this is getting long, so without further adieu here she is in mostly finished garb. The amp does have just a touch of hum, hardly worth noting, and I believe that once the filament work is done that'll be a thing of the past. For those in the greater NYC area I'll have the amp with me this weekend.
