I'm sure I've discussed this elsewhere but for the sake of beating down the JH13 hoards they are not for me for the following reason: situations where I would use IEMs do not lend themselves to critical listening, i.e. I'm using the isolation to block out extremely loud noises. situations where I would use IEMs are somewhat hazardous to their health making expensive IEMs a bad idea. $1100 for something that is exceptionally fit dependent does not sit well with me. I am simply not a fan of $1100 for things that in my opinion have ~25% resale value. In situations where I actually do listen critically I do not want or need isolation. Now, alll that said, I can certainly see why the represent a very good option for other people. If I commuted on a train, traveled frequently on a plane, or lived in an environment where closed cans where a benefit it would be a pretty easy decision.

I also listened to the 13's today and reaffirmed my belief that while wonderful they are not something that I need or want to own. If I traveled like Jeff it'd be a no brainer but I don't have the lifestyle to justify something like this.

Stretch, You were missed. Just made it home, the drive both ways was through some pretty shitty rain but the event made it worth while. Had a good time, did way more listening than usual, and managed to buy some parts at the auction that I have no earthly use for. Yet. Highlights: 1. Seeing Dinny's beta22 again. F I love that amp. 2. Seeing just how small Colin's spud amp is and hearing just how good it is. It's absurd on both counts. 3. Seeing Jeff, Ari, Colin, Dinny, Kerry, Jimmy, Wayne, Arron and a whole slew of others and just catching up for a bit. And of course meeting a few new folks (Judd?). But I'm officially wrecked after a 16hr day (8 of which was in the car) so I'm saving more impressions for tomorrow.

The way I configged it I came up with a pretty decent system for ~$488. Not the best but way cheaper than the comparable mini.

Shelly, think of it this way, it allows a user to do a fresh install of the OS but still easily migrate over old files that are not tied to the OS structure. So if you had say 100gigs of music and didn't want to have to offload it and then reload it that would be pretty darn convenient. Honestly, I think it's one of the things they've now gotten right, they just need to explain what the heck it is so folks know they can delete it if they don't have a use for it.

The 307A based MenaceTC is slated to start construction some time in December and god-willing be fully burned-in in time for CanJam. I've acquired the lion's share of parts for that beast but the layout is about 10x as complex as the "Lite" version so it's going to take a lot of planning.

Saw Neko Case at the Portsmouth Music Hall tonight. Great show that refused to be marred by some minor technical difficulties with a dipshit sound engineer who couldn't quite get levels right all night. She played a variety of old and new, hit some of my favorites like "Hold On, Hold On" from FCBTF and "Polar Nettles" from Middle Cyclone. All in all she is one of those rare artists who is so much better live than on any recording because the voice you hear on the album is her real, unpolished singing voice and her band is just superb. If she tours anywhere near you go. There was also a highly enjoyable opening act whose name escapes me right now, I'll track them down tomorrow.

The last ep before they pulled it was great.

Thanks guys. Ari and I will be working on her a bit this weekend to see if we can tweak some of the buzz out of the output. It's pretty ok with even low impedance open headphones but not with closed cans. We've got a pretty good idea where to start so I'm hopeful she can be made to have an acceptably black background. These types of things are to be expected with PTP builds so I'm not surprised.

$229? Holy hell.

Some of what I'm reading is that FOX still plans to air all 13 from this season since they're pretty much done taping up to Ep11.

What exactly were they expecting with the Friday night time slot? Maybe if they'd called it CSI Dollhouse it would have done better?

Thanks! Actually yes, I had given that some thought and it wouldn't be hard to do with the two existing LEDs. What I had considered doing was drilling an LED sized hole in the terminal board and just poking the LED through that way. Since I have a ring of holes around the base of each tube for ventilation I'm pretty sure you'd be able to see the LEDs light. In the end in the interest of time and actually not wanting any sort of "tube illumination" I abandoned that concept. Question though, how would you propose to tap an LED off of B+?

CJ - it's just time, patience and by laying wiring diagrams out beforehand. It doesn't happen by accident. I'd say I spent somewhere between 6 and 8 hours wiring it and that was after having laid everything out beforehand. Example - you'll notice that the tube sockets are orientated such that the filament wires don't have to cross over any of the other pins to make their connections. That is 100% intentional and something I specifically looked at before laying out the top panel of the amp. In a way, yes, as in don't do it his way. Really it just goes to show you how much of a failure his operation was. I'm an amateur yet he somehow makes me look like a pro. Not very good. Noise floor is currently too high, but I'm working on that. But even at the end of my tweaking I'd never pick anything with tubes in it for IEMs unless it was truly professionally built for them. It's not even for sale (yet).

"Reprasentation" in the subject is the less funny one.

Nice grab Ari!

Saying thanks seems like it isn't enough, but it's all I've got.

Discovered today that it was on sale at the NH Liquor Store for $51.99 a bottle.
