I have a question regarding data service - since all of the "3G" models are being sold unlocked what needs to be done to activate it on another network? It supports the following, which to my dumbness implies that it might be able to grab other providers 3G or at least Edge service. Wi-Fi + 3G model * UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz) * GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) * Data only2 * Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) * Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology

Yes, if you go to your list of podcasts and select "get more episodes" it'll connect you to what I think is the iTunes store and when you try to download an episode it gives you the following message:

Random thought - on the 3G model w/ either data plan I wonder if they (AT&T) will restrict the file size you can download like they do on the iPhone? It'd be pretty weak if you couldn't download a podcast on the fly with this thing.

I don't think it'll have a huge impact. The Pad is not truly portable, pocketsized and is about double the cost of the equivalent Touch. While similar, they are quite different in use.

Here's a little graphic that I cooked up to help understand how much letter boxing you're going to get watching 16:9 HDTV content (blue), or 1.85:1 (red) and 2.35:1 (yellow) movies. At 16:9 it's not bad, but I think movies are going to make you think you're wasting a lot of screen.

Steve, If I may make a suggestion, talk to Stretch about his Pass Pearl. That should qualify as "decent" yet not horrifically expensive.

I would think that any Apple store would be able to replace the battery for you. Not that doing so doesn't come without some sort of time penalty to visit the store but you don't have to send it out for repair. I'd also like to think the battery will last a lot longer than a year.

Quick update - the good folks at Fisher called yesterday to inform me that my customs were done and ready to ship. I opted for UPS 2 day shipping so they should be here tomorrow and I'm loading up the Ipod with tunes in preparation.

I agree that the choice of 1024x768 is somewhat odd. I really expected that it would support HD video content natively but instead it'll have to scale and resample just about everything.

It is closest to the Touch since it's clearly a consumption, not creation device. But it does add much better functionality for low-level creation and I'd guess that those abilities will only increase over time.

See this is what I don't get, the Air and iPad are completely different things. Why you'd shop them against each other doesn't make any sense to me.
