No blame towards Jacob, this is Apple's doing. Not sure what I'll do about the hundreds of contacts that just got flushed but I'm sure with some work most can be tracked back down. I'm hopeful that an old backup of the phone at work might have some of the missing information but I'm not that hopeful. Thankfully my computer recovered after another full restart. I have no clue what could have gotten so pissed that it stopped system services through multiple restarts without error messages but I'm just glad to have it back. One extremely poorly functioning device for one night is enough. The phone is marginally better with this "version" of os4 loaded, but still a steaming turd. This experience might just be enough to make me an android user in the very near future.

Just looked in the local folder where backups "should" be, there's nothing there except the original install that I just did 10 minutes ago. So Fucking Pissed

You have got to be fucking kidding me. So the phone is back up and activated but there is no option to restore data from any of my previous backups (I made sure to back up before installing 4) so my phone is now a blank slate. Not such a big deal other than losing ALL MY FUCKING CONTACTS.

Oh joy, it gets worse. Somehow recboot or .net just killed my webcam and all the usb ports on one side of my laptop. I'm officially having a bad fucking night. At least the iphone is now plugged into one of the two still-functioning usb ports and being restored to factory settings.

Nope, no intel mac in the house anymore. Phone is basically a brick at this point and not even being recognized in itunes.

Shit, piss and corruption. Got all the way through and recboot doesn't want to seem to work. I installed, .net 4.0, it launches fine, but when I press "Exit Recovery Mode" it doesn't seem to do anything. All that is displayed on my phone is the itunes and usb cable icon and when I launch itunes it wan't to recover and update. Wait, hold on, perhaps recboot just takes 5 minutes to do it's thing. The iphone screen just went blank, not sure what to do now... Ugh, doesn't seem to have done anything. Turned the phone on, still get the stupid "plug me into itunes" display.

You and I use our phones the same way. I have just over two pages of apps. Me having folders is like tits on a bull.

I honestly fail to come up with an adequate way to quantify how much of a downgrade 4.0 was. I showed my wife, her comment, "Wow, that's awful."

I'm into the restore phase so it's working so far and evidently I can read instructions.

That looks about right. No idea if the web might be marginally faster. My latest annoyance is that my phone has been refusing for 2+ hrs to connect to iTunes to update apps. I've had to accept the TOS 3 times already, it would appear to be a wonderfully endless loop of update, inform me that the TOS has changed, accept new TOS, retry update, rinse, repeat. Oh, and the 4th time appeared to be the charm with accepting the TOS. Here's to hoping it really works.

That'd be great Doug. Looking at my schedule it seems unlikely I could do much on it for a couple of days despite my best intentions.

Be happy, it's really bad. I just tried to call my wife so I navigated to contacts and selected her name, it took more than 10 seconds to bring up the actual contact information. And Ian witnessed how bad this was at lunch and can verify that I'm not joking with these time estimates. I'll try a full restore to ios4 tonight.

ios4 keeps getting worse. It currently takes 5 seconds or more to simply launch the messages app. Letters no longer appear as I type but lag way behind and all of a sudden words just appear whole. Even the home screen is not nearly as responsive as before. Thanks for killing my phone, Apple.

I don't understand the fuss about background wallpaper. The display is already so cluttered by the app icons that I can't imagine using something for a background that isn't some kind of formless pattern. Certainly not a picture of anything. But I tend towards the simple...

Took about an hour to install on my 3G, so far it's been less stable. :S

I think I'll take Alan Shaw's word over yours with regards to break in.
