  1. Dinny, To shoot action you have to get out of Auto mode, for sure. There are Scene modes in the D7000 and one of them is sports so you could try that but otherwise at a minimum you force the camera to shoot at much higher shutter speeds than it would normally select. The easy way to do this is to jack the ISO (which is one of the great strengths of the D7000) up to something like 3200 or probably even 6400 and then shoot in Shutter priority mode with the shutter set on 1/500 or something like that. I'd then take a few test shots in various lighting conditions and see if I was getting any underexposed results. The other way to do it would be to again set the iso as previously mentioned, run the camera in Aperture priority and run the lens wide open or one stop down (to get a bit better sharpness, but that'll vary by lens) and again shoot some test shots to see what you're getting for shutter speeds. The first method is the most likely to freeze action but may result in underexposed images, the second will get you proper exposure but might slow the shutter to the point of not freezing action. Anyway, I'm a crackerjack at recommendations but also suffer from forgetting 99% of this shit when I go to shoot.
  2. Bummer, this is the weekend that I'm riding the 2-day century in Northern NH otherwise I'd be interested.
  3. Awesome, Al. Really glad you got to spend a day like that with your dad.
  4. Tough run of luck, Mike.
  5. Very cool, Dinny. It kind of reminds me of standing on Ford Island (which is located in Pearl Harbor) listening as a submarine came back into port. All of the ships currently in dock welcomed her home with blasts from their main horns. It was pretty surreal.
  6. Says "Susan1"...
  7. Just finished The Wind Through the Keyhole, otherwise known as Dark Tower 4.5.
  8. This! Happy Birthday!
  9. I've been enjoying cold brewed coffee for the last 3 mornings. What I need to do now is try it with better coffee...
  10. Dan, Do you dilute the resulting "brew" anymore or just drink it straight up? I've got my first batch brewing now for tomorrow and I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll turn out ok.
  11. It's supposed to be 85ish here tomorrow.
  12. Better late than never, Happy Birthday!
  13. My condolences, Archos. But as Dan said, try not to dwell on the loss and remember the good.
  14. Happy Birthday!
  15. I'm probably in for 2 to 4 depending on price.
  16. Left-coast only event. Me: 11hr day over, bring on the bourbon.
  17. Looks like an outstanding time!
  18. I wish. Odds are good I'll put in between 10 and 12hrs today.
  19. Currently at the office writing a report.

I really need to look into the re-fi thing again.
  21. Yup. It kicks the pants out of my D80.
  22. I had a grip for my D80 and I haven't really missed it on the 7k. Reports of issues with the 7k grip have certainly helped.
  23. Happy Birthday, Chris!
  24. Well done, Dinny, that sounds like a good deal to me and either camera is way more capable than most would ever need. Even with the D7k I long for a full-frame body but it just isn't in the budget.
  25. Dinny, From what I remember the 7k is supposed to have a better sensor and offer superior low-light performance as a result. But there are also ways in which the 300 could be considered superior. It kind of depends on how you'd use it. For me, I'd rather have usable higher-iso's and be able to avoid using a flash.
