What are you driving your K1000 with?
crappyjones123 replied to swt61's topic in Headphone Amplification
is it possible to compare the k1ks to any stax gear or is it an apple to oranges thing? very nice steve. -
the common denominator isnt even correct...

this past year, one of the better parts of my driving schedule has been listening to wait wait dont tell me. a very well written (or performed, if it isnt rehearsed) news quiz/slight comedy npr show. part of the allure has been the voice of peter sagal and his presentation and after a few months i had a fairly decent picture of what he might look like in my head. a few minutes ago i randomly happened upon the npr website and having never seen a picture of him, i searched for him. he doesnt look like anything i had pictured =/ not that that changes my desire to listen to the show but it does put me off a tad. i want to say i feel cheated but it is just something silly. anyone else feel similar when they find out a radio personality/musician doesnt in fact look anything you had imagined? does the disconnect make you listen/like them any less? i ask in part because i am just curious and in part to see if this theory i have about us mathematicians is correct...we tend to personify problems. there are ones that we like and ones that we hate with a passion just like a person who cuts us off in traffic or yells at us for no reason. there are ones that are annoyingly easy but take us ages to solve which results in expletives being yelled upon finishing the problem but then also a little chuckle. it is fairly quirky and very few people in my own dept understand what i mean when i say that. wonder if the whole people not looking like i had thought them to is just an extension of that phenomenon or something entirely different.

just got a call back from jaime (after my request to cancel my order) saying that all my emails had been caught mysteriously in a junk mail filter (my university email address - tried from both fau and mit emails so not sure what the heck is going on). also she claimed they never received any of my calls. at this stage dont know if i should continue with the order or just get a refund.

posty doesnt have to worry about the 2399 anymore. it is in safe hands. (well not yet). ps. posty is super cool. pps. would that dact pot require any sort of resistors is series/parallel? or just drop it in and go to town. also any ideas on whether the stock hole in the top plate will accept the dact pot. same question for the tkd pot.

you can never have enough tubes. dew eet. 5998a is the suck. purchased one just to see how it would stack up against the others and it did suck just like nate said it would. standing alone it isnt bad but once you hear an actual tung sol 5998 then you cant really go back.
-
i have a few 5998s now...the 2399 is one i havent heard of. any thoughts on how it racks up against the 421a nate (or posty)? i havent really used anything other than the 421a as the 5998 and the 6as7g dont seem to do anything better than the 421a to my ears. perhaps i am just trying to justify their cost but i really do like the sound out of the 421a better.

like...?

just picked up a mullard 12au7 b6h made at the blackburn plant with the original box. was helping one of my moms friends clean out their garage and found a stash of tubes. only thing that didnt look busted/useless was this mullard b code 12au7 and a rca 12au7 which has no sound in the right channel. nice score nonetheless for a mornings worth of work. letting the tubes warm up now but upon an initial listen the mullard + 421a = pretty fucking nice. the acoustic guitar sounds WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY nicer than with the bugle boy 12au7 but the mullard takes a smidgen off of the top end i think. first pair of 12au7s i have been able to tell a marked difference between. maybe its just that i have been listening to the bugle boy for the past week straight and now switching tubes makes the differences more apparent. nonetheless, very very nice tube. you guys are making me want to go ahead with the crazy build now =/ are there any teflon tube sockets that go into the holes of the stock top plate without any modifications?

damn didnt know they were that delicate. is the owner responsible for such accidents (rebuild costs etc) or are they covered under some weird clause of the warranty? starting to get more and more reasons to cancel my jh16 order - the first few being 6 emails and 3 phone calls that havent been replied to and this is after i have already paid of the jh16s...seems like im in the camp of the few that have had to deal with shitty customer service but i have been extremely polite in all my messages. perhaps i need to try to use stronger language.

they just fell on the ground and cracked open? or was there any force/weight involved? pretty damn brittle if just a fall to the ground makes them spit their guts out...
-
yeah...we do their homework because they dont know how to fucking find means or medians let alone meaningful statistics.
-
damn. must post more so i get cooler than nebby. any thoughts on how this headphone sounds or would sound with the crack? always wanted to hear it but never had a chance to...
-
ive heard about 8 or 9 12au7 variants now and havent heard anything as quiet as the amperex bugle boy 12au7. next comes the hytron 5814a. could live with either but 421a + the bugle boy is what i listen to most of the time.
-
you wont be damning me when you listen to them. the ones from ebay?
-
i can feed the habit as well. got plenty of crack derivatives to float around

i am far too paranoid. returned the tube to the seller and asked for a replacement. but then again, i am in the same state so shipping back to the place was cheap.

trying to get google voice set up so i can make phone calls from my computer. using windows 7 64 bit. the thinkpad has built in mics which sucks so i am trying to use a zalman mic that i have been using for the past 7 years without issue. i can use the mic in ventrilo (skype like program gamers use) and it works just fine so hardware is fine. current set up is as follows. usb - gamma 2 - crack - 650s (for hearing) zalman mic - thinkpad combo jack (same jack for headphones and mic) built in mics are muted. built in volume control is muted. when i go into volume control settings i only see the settings for the built in mic. when i go into google voice settings i see "default device" and the built in mic. i can hear just fine. usb dac works with google voice. when i select default device for mic, and talk, nothing happens. when i select built in mic and unmute it, the voice meter moves. thoughts on how to use the external mic are more than welcome. been working on this for a while now.

listening to raytheon 6as7g with the amperex 12au7. sounds anemic compared to the 5998 and the 421a. marked lack of bass volume (no boom boom bass) but i think that as a result of that the mids seem more emphasized. really nice for vocals but not so much for bass heavy music. bass note just withers away very quickly. with the 421a the impact seems to stick around for a little bit longer. now at 8 x 6080 variants and 19 x 12au7s  but i am finding certain tubes to be better for certain things. however i could just keep the 421a and the bugle boy 12au7 and the amperex 7316 and all it a day. perhaps i should just sell everything else and stock pile those... nebby (or anyone else for that matter) thoughts on yours? or you are too busy listening to the lambdas
