  1. Who is that suggestion for? I hope not me. Quite certain I don't need 8gb ram to watch a 1080p movie.
  2. problem is i don't have a dedicated computer like yours grahame. If i did it would just go straight to the tv via hdmi. might try the wd tv live at home and get dad a tv that supports amazon prime natively. He doesn't have a tv right now, not that he watches much to begin with but we would like to get him something as he is alone in ny and i am sure he wouldn't mind watching random tv every once in a while. Native support for amazon/netflix would be nice.
  3. looks like it has trouble with 720p stuff =/ http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=663
  4. a search of htpc on amazon popped this up. http://www.amazon.com/Media-Center-Gigabit-Network-Reader/dp/B005M1QP7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333564562&sr=8-1 i know nothing about this stuff. is there any reason ^ wouldn't do what I want it to? perhaps a netbook that does 1080p smooth via hdmi? starting to read about this stuff now.
  5. sorry to revive an old thread but some of my requirements matched dougs so i figured i would ask here. i am looking to cancel the cable subscription with dish network at home and just use the internet/amazon prime/netflix/hulu for tv/news purposes. would like something that could play 1080p mkv files off of a hard drive without issue. Most content is 720p but I'd like for 1080p to be playable without issue. something with an hdmi to get away from a bunch of cables. the web streams would be limited to 360/480p due to a 3 mbit line at home. low noise is a priority. id like to stay away from a whole lot of configuration so windows might be favored over mythtv or whatever is out now in terms of linux but if it offers better support i will go with linux. am i better off picking something off the shelf/amazon or building something? budget is fairly low. the speakers are the inbuilt ones on the tv so no need for crazy sound cards. no games. no blu ray. just hard drive files and streaming and maybe the occasional dvd but already have a dvd player so that is optional too. any thoughts? suggestions for hardware? would prefer it be rather small as it will be used for a very limited function.
  6. That made my head hurt. It seems hard to maintain. Something is bound to go bad while configuration or just running the damn thing. I'd just spring for cheap hardware for non critical stuff. Probably cost the same as the license for a software that does what you are trying to do. Install everything and let it be on its own on a switch in the house somewhere and rdp or vnc into it when needed. Just a few strokes more than clicking the desktop button. Keep one Linux box and one pc. I honestly think it would be much easier to maintain and way easier to troubleshoot. I realize not what you asked for but consider it. We had a little box running centos for a game server in our apartment. All admin stuff was done via vnc. FTP was used to update maps. Game files updated automatically. I think in the 3 years we maybe physically accessed the box like 5 times. The box was also running a host of other things that didnt require beefy hardware but needed a whole lot of bandwidth never had any issues.
  7. Happy birthday sir.
  8. until then you could play with voigtlander/zeiss/contax/minolta glass. i am sure there are many other options but the nice thing with the nex 5/5n (less so with the nex 7 because it doesn't like wide angle lenses adapted to it) is you have a shitload of lenses you could play with using adapters. after a brief stint with a d7000 i am heading back to the nex 5 which has been sitting around lensless. there is a local zeiss 35/2.8 available which is what i had prior to the d7000 that is enticing me. i am looking for something a little faster but if nothing comes up in the next few days i will grab the 35mm zeiss. i doubt ill ever have enough money for leica glass nor do i think i know enough to justify the cost of leica lenses. i might grab a cheap voigtlander to hold me over until i find the zeiss i want for a reasonable price. check out the alt forum on fredmiranda.com - big thread with people using nex almost exclusively with zeiss/contax lenses.
  9. Happy bday sir doog
  10. That looks mighty sexy. Enjoy Jon. Post some pics
  11. Game of thrones season 1 over. The first half was nice and at a good fast pace. The second half seemed rushed - maybe it just felt that way bc of the twist and turns. Not having read the books I certainly expect some of the twists. I enjoyed the content but feel like it should have been a bit longer. Hbo has some excellent shows. I wish there wasn't nudity in the shows so I could watch it at home. I subscribed to Hbo and showtime a while back but got it cancelled due to parental issues. I don't find it offensive but parents are hardcore Indians.
  12. Jesus christ. Needed to stay up all night working on Physics. 7 episodes down. I am thinking I should slow down as season 2 isn't available yet.
  13. Just started watching season 1 of the show. Haven't read the books but 2 episodes in, I'm enjoying it a fair bit.
  14. In case you are still looking nate - http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=SDSDU016GA11
  15. I still can't zoom the Nikon way. Exposure screws me up too.
  16. What's the point of trashing 500 dollar gear? Is the guy really making the much off of visits to the video to be able to trash it or is it a case of too much money to know what to do with? I don't get it.
  17. class was over by that point and i was outside. she was kicking the officers and would not get in the back of the car. assault an officer - get tazered.
  18. Tyll, the prof was talking about evolution and how peacocks pick their mates. She asked why evolution killed black people. Prof had no clue how to answer. She asked the same question 3 or 4 more times. The video picks up from there.
  19. No correlation or causation. Just coincidence.
  20. The crazy student video was from my school. I was teaching right next doors when all the yelling started in the evolution class. I wanted to go over and see wtf was going on but the moment she yelled I'm gonna kill everyone, I locked the door and asked everyone to move away from the windows and the door. Crazy shit.
  21. there are quite a few nex 7 floating around on fredmiranda.com. i know of one being sold at retail price.
  22. Happy birthday sir.
  23. Happy birthday big al.
  24. I have to show that math video to my class. No way that thing is real.
