Opened up a box containing a relatively minty Nikon F5 and 16 rolls of Kodak Tri X 400 black and white film. Will have chemistry and other gear for developing film at home on Monday. Splitting a film scanner with a classmate of mine. Haven't decided which one for sure but hopefully sometime soon. As great as the xt1 was, I hadn't used it for 2 weeks and whenever I did use it in tough light, the metering worked maybe 10% of the time. In even light I preferred it slightly to the D800 but the moment you put a light source behind a subject or shoot with the sun in the background, it would completely black out the subject. No matter what I did, I could not get the metering to work properly. The d800 although not as much fun to use just gets everything right the first time. Focus locks on immediately and meters perfectly regardless of the light source positioning.

I don't use PS much at all so skipping the graphics card right now. If I find myself missing it, I'll grab a low end one - don't plan on gaming anytime soon. -

Yes ma'am. The tutorials make it seem pretty easy. No harder than following instructions. To avoid problems while debugging I stuck to the list of components that are verified to work. Will keep this thread updated on how it goes. -

OS X is just $20 but I have a macbook air so I can download it again as I paid for it when I was upgrading to Mavericks. Yosemite is going to be free to no worries on that account either. In typical head case fashion, I could not stick to the aforementioned budget and ordered the following. And a 128gb Samsung 840 Pro ssd for the OS and catalogs. Should be plenty of space since nothing else will be on that drive. Images all get stored in the 2tb drive which I can add to later once that fills up. Excited to have a desktop again. Still need a keyboard... -

Something to note - the $1000 build doesn't even have a dedicated gfx card...but I don't know what to cut down on. -

Marc, I already have a Dell Ultrasharp 27" monitor. I flirted with the idea of having another one of the same as I love the damn thing but it would block both speakers. Same issue with a used iMac. -

I quite like the idea of a hackintosh and it doesn't seem like the hardware is going to cost much less/more than a windows build. How is this for a build? It's roughly $1000 even. The list is assembled from a list of parts verified to work with a hackintosh - and this for a hard drive - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E3W1726/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Is there anywhere I can trim fat down as it is right at $1000. -

Never did that before but if I can stay in the apple software realm i would prefer it as it saves me from having to buy software licenses again. -
Need some help putting together a parts list for a desktop machine needed for editing photos. Will have a macbook air for everything else. The air struggles with D800 and XT1 files frequently and I can't blame it as that is not the intended purpose for that machine. I'd love to stay in the apple ecosystem but the mac mini's have the same graphics card as the air so not much in the way of performance improvements there. Intended usage for this new computer will be Lightroom and Photoshop and any other random photo editing software. Don't care about video. Will never be doing anything with video in the foreseeable future. Can anyone suggest a parts build for <$1000 (preferably <$700)? Is newegg still the place to go for this? I stopped shopping with them after building a couple of systems when single core processors were king back in the day but I am familiar with how to put a system together. Already have a monitor and mouse. Will need everything else. Would a prebuilt Dell/something or the other be cheaper? Don't care for over clocking or gaming. Do care a lot about the rig being noisy so the quieter the better. Thanks.

At least now I have a giant hinged knee brace. Aren't those in style nowadays?
-
I asked. The ortho surgeon said, "well, it varies. Could be 6 months. Could be never." The ligament doesn't really regenerate but just forms scar tissue. Given how much that part of the body moves, the healing time gets compounded exponentially.

Just got the radiologist report for my knee. Mcl and medial meniscus are torn enough to cause chronic pain but not enough to require surgery.

Is buying new a necessity? The x100s regularly goes for less than $1000. doesn't really solve the looks issue but within your budget. I have the xt1 and it has some very peculiar things about it that bugged me with the x100 as well. Certain settings only work in certain modes and not otherwise. I only shoot raw so can't comment as to the JPEG quality but id imagine it doesn't disappoint. I've been curious about the Ricoh but the fuji 56/1.2 lens was just too powerful a pull to let me pull the trigger on the Ricoh. Street shooters swear by it from everything I have read so far. Sucks that there's nothing in a way of a busy street in Davie like NYC. -

Fuji keeps coming up for the best out of camera jpegs. An x100 perhaps? Maybe the x100s if you can live with the focal length? -

the xt1 is a freaking beast in low light. Never seen files this clean at ISO 6400. -

Thank you gents. The day has been spent so far in the anatomy lab taking pictures of brains for a lab manual for next years class. Then picking up Julie's mom who is flying in from Canada and making them dinner. Should be a nice quiet day.

I vote for foxit PDF reader and eset nod32. Used both for years and never had problems. Still use nod 32 on my MBA. -
This might get my a 2 week vacation but I'll say it anyways. Have you considered duller knives? To avoid incidents precisely as these? Not being facetious but the statement stems from genuine concern.

My portable usb drive is about filled and I am looking for a replacement. I mostly need something to dump raw files from the d800 and the xt1 onto and then edit them using Lightroom. The MBA only hold so many files and I'd rather have my music occupying the little space I have. Current options are another usb portable drive. http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backup/dp/B00E055H5O/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402802747&sr=1-2&keywords=wd+passport $110 for 2 TB (pretty steep price/gb ratio). Non portable desktop usb portable drive. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STBV3000100/dp/B00834SJU8/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1402800799&sr=8-16&keywords=portable+hard+drive $99 for 3TB (best price/gb ratio) Some sort of NAS arrangement. I am not married to a brand. The USB portable drive is nice in that it is, well, portable. Non portable drive can get plugged straight into the Airport Extreme and used as a network drive without the noise in my room but would that reduce the file transfer/read/write speeds? In practice which would be faster - usb drive in to the MBA or usb drive into the airport extreme? NAS arrangement doesn't refer to a real NAS solution but something like this. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ARB5FNE $200 would be my hard limit although I'd like to spend as little as possible. Don't want to go smaller than a 2tb drive as I think that that is the sweet spot currently. The 3tb non portable is $25 off so a better price. Any suggestions for my intended purpose?
